Race 6 tough start, got to the right side to make gains on the fleet, in both upwind legs. Right paid us off, eventually gaining 3rd place around the top mark and defended right until the finish line with brilliant tactics by Tim, steady driving by Paul, excellent trimming by Luke and kite hoists and douses and wind calls by Alan. Looking forward to World Championships 9/29/2014.

I don't understand what people not wearing life jackets
Nice Sail !!! ........ I am looking at the J70's ......... trying to find one locally.
Would it make it easier to install a couple of winches aft for easier solo tacking and driving from behind the traveler? Not racing so no problem doing any mods...
I was thinking of installing a couple of self tailing winches right forward of the main traveler for easier talking, but your method looks interesting. Hard to see in the video, but when you tack after moving to the high side, do you wrap the active sheet on top of the windward winch preloaded with the lazy sheet? Could you explain please?
what do you think about aerodyne38 compare to j109j105or sun fast 3600 ? sailig downwind and up wind ?
What is the man standing on the boat???
Each turn = 6-10 sec
Helmsman is sleeping?? Always looking behind and does not go up.
I watched it a couple of times. It's not very seaman like sailing. You're not really in control of the boat. If you ever fell overboard you'd be one soggy fish. You're a little bit overpowered for the conditions without any rail rats and you seem not to have any reefing options. Sad to what passes for sailing skill.
Well spin is rigged and ready to hoist😉
Thanks for sharing!
Christ this skipper doesn't know what hes doing
Get rid of the bungees stand behind the main sheet with the tiller between your knees. And man! keep those lines clear!
Very nice work captain.
Nice spi set at mark 1!
Great video, but the heavy metal music drove me crazy, I had to mute it to watch it :-)
Have you considered standing during the jibe with the tiller between your legs, facing forward behind the traveler the entire time. Gives a better control of the helm then the bungee cords and keeps you away from the main steet. That's what I do on my J100, but it is a bigger cockpit and a more stable platform, so it might not work on the J80. Something to consider.
Your jib trimmer should invest in a helmet.
Nice video.
The rudder is also known as the hand brake. Use much less of it.
learnt much! have you got a video for raising / lowering the kite?
Put the vang on hard
I sail a J80 with my brother, and it keeps us pretty busy. Alone, you surely can'y get bored!! Great skill!
Excellent commentary.
Release tack line and sprit together and collect the entire foot. Only then do you blow the halyard. Slowing gybing into a windward take down makes it clean and simple!
Were you by yourself on the right side of the course?
Would be nice to see the set up pre-launch while beating to the top mark, launch after rounding, gybing downwind and retrieval at the downwind mark ready for the beat to windward and packing so the assy is ready for re-launch on the next downwind run or beam reach.
`At 2:42 the traveller was eased and we could not hold the high mode.
also looking all over the place
very helpful, thank you white shorts, huh, what did you say there was a boat in that video
Exactly the kind of think I'm looking for. Thanks!
i'm not sure his eyes were focused on the mainsail too much that day.
Good jibe indeed.. Guess your xp helped you through that.. Nice!
I'm going to start racing 80's next month. This was a really good vid. Thanks!
looks very fun! I am currently stuck with sailing a laiser, but i really want to get onto a J boat.
great videos! Have you ever raced lasers? What is funner for you?
Dump the man on the spinnaker and get somebody who can do it!
Who did you buy the boat from? I built it. Zach de Beer
Nice vid! Been solosailing with my J/80 for a few sessions. For a simple spinnaker drop I like to use kiwi-drop, the spinnaker then gets into the boat instead of out in the water if the boat starts to head up.
I am in the green shirt--Alan Bates
Great video, good to see how a Kite is used on real conditions. Will give it a try
Isnt this risking life? I will risk anything to do this but hmmm...... lol
Thanks for the Tiller Lock heads up.
I like these videos better when you give after action commentary. Thanks for posting them though!
Nice video and narration, great teaching/learning tool...like the self-leveling video of course!
nice job Alan!!!!
whats up with your main? I know loose is fast but those are some serious rinkles.
))))
well done mate but yoiu shoud try to gyb with the tiller in betwen your knees like in 470
The boat is also reacting to your body weight being on the leeward side and keeps luffing, you can steer using boat balance.
YES, J80 with wide angle lens.
Is that a J80? It looks oddly narrow for some reason. Is the camera lens distorting things?
Really nice video and good teamwork!!! Thanks for sharing!! HUSTLE #065...
