Threhane Miniatures
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 มิ.ย. 2020
Paint table top miniatures to a "higher" standard, striking a balance between quality of output and time invested. If you feel like you're ready to move beyond the typical "base/shade/highlight" approach to painting, then this is the place for you. We'll look at glazing techniques, object source lighting, non-metalic metal, and other approaches to painting miniatures, with minimal use of an airbrush. We hope you join us!

Wee lil brain
Amazing work as always. The head looks amazing and really appreciate the detailed explanation on how you layered up the cape.
Thank you for the kind words, and support! It means a lot coming from such an accomplished painter! I've learned so much about painting black armor, in particular, from your channel. (I'm in the middle of your Telemon Heavy video right now!)
Another great quality informative video! Keep it up!
Thank you! (I will)
Ooooo, are you gonna do the zombie one next?
...maaaaaayyyyybeeeeee... Thanks for watching!
Wow amazing man well done
Thanks, bud! This one was a lot of fun. Green and purple is becoming my favorite color scheme.
Shame that all tuts are for airbrush 😢
There's no shame in airbrushing, friend. But seriously, that's a valid point, and your comment made me think. I feel like I'm 50/50 using an airbrush in my tutorials. In fact, 5 out of the next 6 videos don't have any airbrush at all. BUT, those are focused on Marvel Zombies minis. If you're interested in Cthulhu DMD, then you are absolutely 100% correct. Those tutorials have a disproportionate amount of airbrush use. I didn't even realize that I was doing that. I just kinda grab the airbrush when I feel like using it, and I leave it alone when I don't feel like using it. There are really only two things I use the airbrush for: the base color for OSL (which I did on all of the great old ones), and a zenithal base color when I'm batch painting (like Tcho-Tcho, Dark Spawn, and cultists). I should strike a better balance between approaches going forward. After all, my current favorite painting style is layering with minimal glazing. Thanks for being part of the conversation!
Nice! I didn't see a difference in the end result at all. I think I would be using oil wash just for the fact that it's less anxiety-inducing lol
Thanks! Yeah, oils are more forgiving to work with for sure, but they have drawbacks in the form of time, and having to use mineral spirits.
Pretty sweet end result!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Amazing quality!
Thank you!
Great job. Also I see the oil as a powerfull tool to paint armies
Great point! I was focused on the perspective of working on individual minis, and completely missed discussing how oils can be an effective option for painting armies. Thanks!
Meh
eh?
Glazing blue over the white at the end is genius. It's a rechop of the half chop, bringing us back to a full chop. A double half 360 chop OSL. We are getting in the skateboard tricks level of naming insanity.
I wish you were around when I was trying to think of the title for this video! The "Tony Hawk Painting Method" is WAY more fun! (Or simply the "900", for short)
Your tutorials are a-ma-zing! I feel totally encouraged and inspired to try this out! I will go painting right now x) I am looking forward to the rest of them
Thank you for the amazing words of encouragement! Kind comments like this motivate me to keep making videos!
This model looks kinda cute with the big eyes but maybe also because it's tiny. Can't wait for the DIY paint, though!
It's coming! Thanks for watching!
🔥
Thanks!
cool - looking forward to custom speed paint making
Thanks for the reminder! (So much time passes between recording and publishing that I sometimes forget what i said). I plan to demonstrate DIY speed/contrast paint while speed painting the Specialists for Marvel Zombies.
This looks so sick! Good choices of colour and a very informative tutorial
Thanks! That means a lot, coming from an excellent painter like you!
Nice, thanks! Did you mention how long time you spent on this?
Thank you so much! I didn't specifically track the time on these minis. I batch painted all 5 minis at the same time. Something that stood out (when I was editing the raw footage) was that the entire airbrushing session took a little less than 5 minutes for all 5 miniatures. So fast. The wash took several minutes, going very quickly, also. I probably spent too much time painting the highlights on the back. If speed is the goal, I'd dry brush the white highlights on the back like I did in my ghoul video here: th-cam.com/video/9fFmRGYQtzw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ijk44ANOJylDSgOL After experimenting with several approaches to painting the back, dry brushing the back with white, followed by a dark blue speed paint, is the fastest, and my favorite.
Any time an airbrush is used is an insta-fail (for me)
Yeah, I get it. I understand that using an airbrush can exclude a large portion of the audience. I demonstrate the same style without using an airbrush in this video here: th-cam.com/video/9fFmRGYQtzw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ijk44ANOJylDSgOL I hope it works for you. Basically, the idea behind half chop (intentionally silly name) is that you start with a dark blue primer, and quickly paint half of the mini in shadow (which I never use an airbrush for). The "fully" painted side of the mini should be painted in your preferred style. I probably could have done a better job expressing this in the video. It's been a ton of fun getting miniatures painted quickly with this style, and It's something I enjoy sharing with others. Thanks for participating in the discussion! I hope to see you around.
@@threhane3492 Thanks!
Did you paint the rest of these guys the same way after finding that you didn't like how the highlights on the dark side turned out or did you do them different?
They're all the same. I batch painted them, meaning I painted each step on all five minis before moving on to the next step. I basically treat them as one miniature when batch painting. Any lessons learned here will be applied to my next miniature. Thank you for the comment!
This is the only way i paint, stopped using an air brush and i am inproving my skills day by day.
Nice! Layering is definitely my overall favorite approach to painting. I'll still use an airbrush for laying the foundation color for OSL...and for speed painting minions. It's just so much easier. But, I don't think my $17 airbrush is precise enough to let me experiment with more detailed work. We'll see. Hey, thanks for the sub!!!
great video!
Thanks, bud!!!
😅
There was a "tallywacker" joke in here somewhere, but I refrained.
@@threhane3492 lol must have been painful
The wash on this one looks great - though I definitely didn't picture these guys as having red skin.
Neither did I. The truth is, that I did a little research on the Tcho Tcho AFTER I started painting. Oops. I think I still would have leaned towards painting it close to the game art, since that's the reference that most gamers have. Thank you for the positive feedback!
Such a cool style
Thank you for the kind comment! I'm happy that you enjoyed it.
I gave this video half a like.
Haha...I'm giving this comment a full heart, because it made me laugh! Thanks for checking out the video!
♥
I love this. Do you have, or can you recommend, a video on drybrushing? I kind of know the theory, but the practical has always eluded me
Thank you for your kind feedback! Artis Opus is probably the authority on dry brushing these days. He achieves high-level finishes with his dry brushing, beyond just normal slap chop. Check out this video here: th-cam.com/video/kxuY2NXeI2M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zPiLC6OtGOzM153N
@@threhane3492 thank you!
I agree, this color scheme looks way better!
Yeah, I think that the pained miniatures in the Kickstarter campaign look fantastic, as a whole, but the painted example for this particular miniature was a "miss" for me. Thank you so much for watching!
Super cool - love the colors on this one
Thank you so much!
Best deep one I’ve seen painted ❤
Thank you for that, and thank you for being part of the channel!
Great video! Congrats on 400 subs!
Thank you! And thank you for being here supporting the channel since the beginning!
I have been looking for a novice friendly way to achieve this effect for years, thank you!
Thank YOU! Comments like this motivate me to keep producing content!
Dude, if you made rhe videos without changing steps. So it was a proper guide this would he one of the best tutorials on youtube. 2 videos ive watched now trying to follow your method. But you change methods mid paint on both models. 😂
I appreciate the valuable feedback! Comments like this will help me improve as a content creator. Sometimes my painting process doesn't go according to plan, and I think that is reflected heavily in this video, and my Cthulhu video. I hope I did better with Black Goat, and Yog Sothoth, as I stuck with the original plan on those. Thanks for checking out the channel!
@threhane3492 hey, I still am using your video. I did sound a bit bitchy there but I appreciate ypur video. 😂 I love the purple and the highlights you do make it stand out with the lights. I'd love to see a monster focused on your purple theme. Get rid of the green lol.
@@EMPERORSPROTECTION-TERRA4LIFE I took your comment as "constructive criticism", which is always welcome here! Not bitchy at all. I'm always looking to improve my content quality, and I appreciate the engagement!
His skin looks so gruesome, I love it!
Thank you!
I've always thought about painting, but kept putting it off. Your wizard OSL with this method actually made me finally get a kit and start. Not sure if its unique to you but it really motivated me. Thanks!
First, welcome to the miniature painting hobby! I'm happy to hear that you found the motivation to get started. Let us know how it goes painting that first mini. I'd never claim that anything I present in my videos is "unique to me". I pick up new tips and tricks, and painting ideas from all over the place...all the time. It's been fun combining some of those ideas into a speed painting style that leaves the miniature with the appearance that it its half in shadow. It was also fun giving that style a silly name. Thank you so much for watching!
Another awesome video with compelling commentary. My painting skills seem to get better every video 🎉
Thanks, bud!
looks great! I got to try this! BTW What's your camera?
Thank you! I'm using a Canon R50 camera with an older EF 24-70mm lens (with EF-R mount adapter). In this video I have the aperture set to F 4.0, which has a very tight focus range, and makes keeping the miniature in focus a nightmare, but lets in plenty of light. In the video I'm recording now, I'm experimenting with reducing the aperture to F 16, and increasing the exposure to keep more of the miniature in focus. Hopefully it doesn't make things look to washed out. Thanks for the question!
🔥🔥
Thanks!
I like this :) for monsters this seems like the way to go!

I'll give it a try

Interesting and vibrant style! What opacity inks do you use?
Great question. I never thought to look at that. The red ink that I used for the base of the OSL coming from the orb is Daler Rowney Crimson ink. It's thin enough that I only use a couple of drops of flow improver in the cup before running it through the airbrush. It's labeled as "transparent", but as you can see, it has pretty good coverage when used this way. The white ink that I used for the basis of the blue glaze on the back of the mini is liquitex titanium white, and it's opaque. I honestly don't think that white ink is the best choice here. As I develop this further as a speed painting method, I'm moving towards just using a white drybrush as the base for the blue glaze on the back. In this case I use a 50/50 mix of cheap liquitex white acrylic paint thinned with liquitex white ink (the paint adds a lot of body, and the ink adds pigment). Thanks for the comment!
Okay, I genuinely hope people understand both the intended joke and the usefulness of this for getting an army painted quickly.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate this comment. I feared that people might dismiss the useful information as being "part of the joke", or that they wouldn't see the humor and just dismiss me as some arrogant prick touting the "latest/greatest" thing to ever hit the internet. Thanks for getting it! Perfect comment!
Dude I love contrast on the mini! Great work
