    "It matters, Mr. Crawford." The first time I saw the film, that line hit me hard. I didn't know the term micro aggression, but I loved how Clarice answered the slur with quiet intensity.

    Personally, I first saw this in middle school. Out school had projectors and screens in the two cafeterias and every day a different movie was played in each. I only had a few minutes glance (the Fireys scene specifically), because I was supposed to eat my lunch with the algebra teacher as I was skipping to Algebra 2 next year and asked for some tutoring. But it was enough to get me curious, and I searched for it for years using only the references I got from the song til I found it.

    I'm trying to remember a claymation or animation movie about a girl in a nightmarish world, overcoming obstacles and fears. It had something to do with a cat and a ball of yarn, I think, or I'm confusing it with Coraline AGAIN. It's not Coraline. I saw it in an artsy theater in the early 2000's. It was new at the time. Anyone have any ideas?

    I recently researched the movie as an adult, and during the goblin ball, I said to my mother "He's dressed as the night sky- the infinite darkness, where she's dressed in white- the moon that is a beacon of light and hope in the dark."

    I'd throw shade at Disney's colonialism but most Australian theme parks (defunct or not) had a very white viewpoint of Australia's post convict history. Old Sydney Town TRIED to have a little display about Indigenous peoples but when the majority of theming relating to Aboriginal peoples results in tacky fibreglass Uluru (Leyland bros world) we have no right to ridicule Walt Disney's fifties aesthetics.

    Thank you! Finally someone else who sees this movie for exactly what it is! I have always viewed Jareth as a "good guy" in this movie (not the protagonist of course). You said "shadow mentor" which is an even better description. I've waited for 6 long years and today was the day I showed my twin daughters Labyrinth, and I hope they figure out the meaning as they get older like you have :). In a more literal sense, I think Jareth was just a figment of her own imagination, but if indeed he was real, I think his goal was from the start to help her, like a Gandalf figure who showed up to help her grow up.

    Literally as you posted this, I was picking out recipes from Peg Brecken’s 1960 “I Hate To Cook Book,” which includes instructions like “Make sure the butcher cracks them. Otherwise, though they’ll still taste good, they’ll look rather like rolled up pants legs and be harder to eat.” And “Add the flour, salt, paprika, and mushrooms, stir, and let it cook five minutes while you light a cigarette and stare sullenly at the sink.” If you find a copy, I highly recommend a look through.

    Jareth represents Sarah's fantasies/dreams. When she says, "You have no power over me." It's not from the perspective of a female against a dominant male. It's Sarah affirming to herself that's she's grown up and can put her fantasies to the side and exist in the real world. Instead of locking herself up in her room of make-believe. The ballroom scene is another perfect example. That's what Sarah imagines what going out on "dates" are like and being "grown". But it's nothing at all like that. It's about being responsible and being accountable for your actions, which she proves by the end of the movie.

    Don’t forget pigeons are one of the oldest feral species! The pigeons in Disney are also occasionally supplemented with lost homing pigeons and dove releases within the park! They are domesticated birds a lot like the red eared slider turtles in which they were once a captive specie that got out and had a huge population boom

    Omg yes yes yes. I hate that the famous coming of age movies centered on women are all about sex and being cool 🙄 like really. It’s like coming of age is ALL about sex and the characters are so shallow. As opposed to Labyrinth :) Thank you for this!

  • @ambern7734
    @ambern7734 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    loved this video thank you for putting it up. I just rewatched Labyrinth for the 1st time in like 10 years or more and started to remember, why I loved his movie when I was young. And fell in love with it all over again for different reasons. Labyrinth was a movie before its time. Yet would not have gotten made in another ara. Jareth the Goblin King is still my favorite Character. the complexity of his character both and what we did see and what we did not see of him. Even though he was the antagonist in Sarah's story, He still felt like he could be a hero in another story. And Sarah. She is a strong female character done right. Sarah is wonderful because she is Feminine and strong, along with having flaws. I very much wish we would see more female characters like her. It seems like a lot of movies and shows take away a female Character's feminity a lot even replacing it with a type of masculinity. Some female characters even show the toxic masculinity personality we use to see in some male characters.

    This video was incredibly thoughtful and well put together. As someone who grew up going to disneyland and loving the tiki room as a kid, the question of the exploitation of Hawai'ian culture always lingered in the back of my mind, as someone who is of Native American descent. I know what it's like to have outsiders not take your culture seriously. It isn't an aesthetic.

  • @waltermanson999
    @waltermanson999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been saying this for about a year now ! Awesome points ! I would take it slightly farther though. Fantasyland = God given right to rule over others / and Tomorrowland appeals to the logical side and is the bow on top of the whole "present" it represents the promise of "progress" that colonialism brings. And let us not forget colonialism-lands big sister World-domination-land or as they like to call it Epcot.

  • @rct3isepic
    @rct3isepic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok but what about Tomorrowland? Also I’m surprised you didn’t mention Main Street USA which is a romanticized version of small town America which at the very least turns a blind eye to the happenings of the last 1800s and early 1900s in favor of a permanent 4th of July type celebration that most likely wouldn’t have been too kind to non white folk based on the time period. So ENJOY SPACE MOUNTAIN!!!

    • @waltermanson999
      @waltermanson999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tomorrowland is the white shimmering utopia that could be if we colonize the world and turn its "untamed" jungles into giant warehouses of "progress". Left to Write, the lands of Disneyland chronologically display the "progress" of colonialism, and Tomorrowland represents the benevolent outcomes that we are expected to believe are the natural products of a colonialist system. Also sorry if I ruined Space Mountain too =p

    • @LostLifetimes
      @LostLifetimes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it also originally was built to promote both capitalism and the nuclear family. The first is obvious, but the second is way less of a thing now that Innoventions is dead, but “house of the future” used to be HUGE. Also kind of a stretch but romanticizing war in a way (space travel connected to Cold War to begin with plus Star Wars overlay, Star Wars is also very white with the “chosen one” narratives)

    • @waltermanson999
      @waltermanson999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LostLifetimes True, there are some positives when it comes to Tomorrowland too, Urban planning, Space exploration, and just in general a positive attitude towards the future, but while it is the least problematic of the lands, it also seems to be the land with the greatest identity crisis, manny of the meaningful experiences have been traded in for a chance to sell more merchandise. And if Disneyland is any indication of what is to come, I fear Autotopia will long outlive the People mover, which to me seems counterintuitive to why it was originally designed and built the way it was.

      That's because black people are the real black natives the white freemasons stole from us then enacted eugenics to steal the land but couldnt, becoming a nation I can blame them but it really was the entire world that was in on taking the new world for themselves from us.

  • @PopfulFrost
    @PopfulFrost 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm laughing, but also you're absolutely right. I think the most messed-up part is, you can't really "fix" these things because they're so inherently ingrained to the park's aesthetic that you'd basically have to build an all-new park in order to remove them, which defeats the purpose of it being Disneyland in the first place. If I wanted an unrecognizable Ship of Theseus masquerading as a beloved Disney park, I'd go to Disney World instead.
