look stupid in lecture, feel smart after the test
After medical school, the time for looking stupid is over (though it still happens). While you are a student, take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions in class. This is one of the advantages of going to lectures live or in person--you have experts in the field there to answer your questions. If you can overcome the embarassement of admitting when you don't understand something, you'll almost always find that you are not alone. If you are asking questions in class, you will also be more engaged and professors generally respond positively to students engaging them in class. It's also a very helpful barrier to overcome early, the barrier of admitting that you don't understand something. It will serve you well, and you'll be happy you asked the questions you did when you are taking the test.

The "one-handed" surgical knot
มุมมอง 31014 วันที่ผ่านมา
One of the first things you'll be tested on in medical school if you want to be a surgeon is whether you can tie a surgical knot. There is no magic or trick to tying knots, you just have to practice. That's why they are a good early test of interest for medical students, it clearly shows who has been practicing this skill in their own time. In this video I am showing practicing with a shoelace ...
Science journey part 2
มุมมอง 42821 วันที่ผ่านมา
Getting ownership of a big project in medical school was a big part of building my confidence. Having great mentors that built me up was also critical. I took risks on projects that I was really interested in and willing to invest a lot of time into. Overall this led me to doing experiments I found stimulating and wanted to keep investigating. The more experiments you do, the more you find, and...
Neuroscience: Model systems
มุมมอง 35021 วันที่ผ่านมา
Model systems are important tools to study any disease, and neurologic disease is no exception. The model that you choose to study should depend on the question you want to ask, since every model has advantages and limitations. I think it's extremely important to enjoy the techniques that you use and a lot of this will be dictated by the model of the disease you study, so choose wisely!
Science Journey (Part 1)

I am now pretty far down a path to being a neurosurgeon and physician scientist studying how to better understand and find new treatments for neurologic disease. While one might assume that I had always been into science, that's actually not the case. In this Part 1 video, I try to provide some context about how getting into science and research started out as a way to improve my resume just to...
Choosing a medical specialty
มุมมอง 1.2K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Choosing medical specialty is incredibly personal. You should first reflect on why you think you are having a hard time choosing. If it is just between two options, a good pros-and-cons list can be very helpful. You should also try to talk to people in these specialties and ask them what their life is like, and see whether that is something that works for you.
Should I go into neurosurgery
มุมมอง 2.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
There are a lot of reasons to be a neurosurgeon, and plenty of reasons not to. When making that decision, it's important to think about the hard parts of the job, and how they fit with your personality. One part of the job is taking full responsibility for the care of people who are in dire straights. As a neurosurgeon you are the last line of defense when people have some of the scariest condi...
Choosing medicine & surgery
มุมมอง 1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Feeling faint or even passing out at the site of blood or when seeing a surgical procedure is a normal physiologic reaction than many people have. This is generally because of the novelty or rarity of what you're seeing. This does not mean you can't be a doctor or even a surgeon. You can get yourself accustomed to just about anything. So if you are planning to go into a medical field and find y...
Standardized test studying from a neurosurgeon (full lecture)

Standardized tests can have a huge impact on where you end up in academia, so its best to have a well-thought out and standardized approach to them. This video goes through a method I learned in medical school to study for USMLE Step 1 and step 2CK. While I'm not a natural test taker, by sticking to a regimented schedule, I was able to score between the *92nd and *96th percentile on these tests...

Choose your tools, question-banks, textbooks and studyguides wisely. I suggest having both a question bank resource (if available) and some sort of textual resource. You should absolutely find out if there are any officially produced or approved practice tests f...

Don't fall into these pitfalls of long term study plans. Do not get hung up on one particular topic trying to master it. Hello Dr.Andrews love your context on TH-cam and TikTok! As many of your followers are likely medical students can you please make more content pertaining to medical school even if it’s just like your 1.5 min video on this surgical knot. I think your video on standardized exams was extremely insightful. Would it be possible for you to make one specifically catered towards step 1 and 2 prep throughout ms2 and ms3 as well as during dedicated and how u would best set your self up for success during dedicated. Also a video on finding a valuable mentor in medicine would be awesome! Given your busy schedule this might be very difficult but just throwing out topics that hundreds of medical students like me would love your insight on!

I really enjoy your videos and look forward to watching more. A question I like to ask physicians is if they could go back in time, would they do it all again? All the studying, standardized tests, years of residency, do you feel it was worth it? Also, if you could go back and give your MS1 self any advice, what would it be? Thank you for your time.

Thank you for this video. To be honest, I regret to say (and this brings me no happiness), that I have failed a lot of my courses simply because I did not have a set-schedule for studying. I always had really good memory as a kid, so flash cards were a few of the tools that I'd use. Memorizing a few things here and there helped, but when it came to problem solving; getting to the root of a problem and developing a solution for it; I struggled and ended with failure. I then realized that memorization comes with understanding the fundamentals of the subject; focus on the foundation (what, why, how, etc), not just the remembrance of certain ideas surfaced on concepts. Again, thank you, I will put this plan into action for my Fall semester coming up.

just curious what you think about pre-made flash cards. i agree about making your own it, it is a waste of time. but with premade and for a larger test (im taking the mcat) i think they have benefit in certain subjects that you just need refreshers on especially if you are studying over the course of several months. obviously something like physics or chemistry that requires you to manipulate equations and things like that are less flashcard friendly but generally i think they have benefit when used in combination with the study tools you mentioned. let me know what you think
