Tooling a Leather Wallet
Here I am tooling a leather wallet at 5x speed. This is just an entertainment video but I think it should be slow enough that you might be able to get something out of it. I have other videos that I slow down and go into depth if you're more interested in that. I want to do more videos like this so let me know in the comments if that is something you would be interested in!

    Have any tips for keeping it nice and straight how you have it? I did a belt the other day, angled basket stamp, and by the end it was a straight basket stamp. 😅

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Make a straight line down the center of the belt and line up one corner of the basket stamp on the line and the opposite corner on the line so it’s at a consistent angle, it’s hard to explain over typing but if you want to reach out on Instagram or Facebook I can try to help you more

    Thanks for this video, it's really informative. I had a question about the resist and antique.. If you put the resist on and then put on the antique, does the resist not stop the antique from penetrating through to the leather?

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, you don’t want the antique to penetrate the leather

  • @jayplays568

    Great video! I would love to see one that shows what other tools are used for e.g. camouflages, veiners, crowners, bar grounders, mule feet, etc. Also, do you only use a smooth beveller or also some of the non-smooth ones (and in what situations do you prefer one type over the others)?

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I only use a smooth bevel, I’ve tried textured ones but I just prefer the look of smooth and also feel it’s easier to work

  • @jayplays568
    @jayplays568 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video, thanks for making it. Could you clarify what the difference is between the camouflage tools and just regular border stamp tools? I've seen border stamps that have a similar shape to the camouflage tool you used here so I was just wondering what the differences were and when you should use one instead of the other..

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m not 100% sure on the difference but they are interchangeable for this application. I think the camouflage tools have a crowned bottom where the boarder stamps are flat but I could be wrong

  • @jayplays568
    @jayplays568 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for the video! Could you finish this pattern with a two tone effect? e.g. dye the border and then put antique in the middle? Or would that not work for this?

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can, that is exactly how I would finish this and almost all of my projects

    • @jayplays568
      @jayplays568 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jakeufford7356 Thanks Jake! I was thinking this would look good on a wallet exterior but wasn't sure if the two tone effect could be achieved. Thanks for clarifying. Would you use this pattern on the interior of a wallet as well? Or would you just leave the inside unfinished or use a different leather inside?

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use a different leather on the inside of my wallets that isn’t tooling leather. If you had leather thick enough to tool on the interior then the entire wallet might get to be too thick before even putting cash or cards in it. You can definitely give it a shot though to see if it works out. Just something to think about

    • @jayplays568
      @jayplays568 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jakeufford7356 what is the minimum thickness needed for tooling? I've seen natural veg tan available in 1.2mm which I assumed meant it was thick enough to tool on.. many wallets seem to use this thickness on the interior but now I'm questioning if it is thick enough to tool on..

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You theoretically could tool 2oz but it wouldn’t get as much definition and it would jeopardize the integrity of the leather having Been cut with the swivel knife and tooled on. This is just my personal findings and again feel free to give it a shot. If it work that’s awesome. If you don’t like how it turns out it’s something to learn from

    Hi, thanks for that informative vid. Do you ever lightly dampen the leather surface before dying it? I noticed my dying technique on a belt was a bit uneven when applied to a dry surface, but the bend of the belt was still damp and the dye covered much more evenly on this section. What are your thoughts & experience dying leather when its damp? Thank you

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I make sure my belts are as dry as they can be. It could depend on what dye you use but I only use fiebings pro dye which is oil based, typically it will be even after 2-3 coats. Sorry for the late response but hope that helps!

  • @richardanderson4916

    You could save yourself a lot of time if you took a small scrap of wood and two smaller scraps, built a little bridge so your inch and a half belt fit exactly under it, then mark the top of tge bridge exactly in the middle. Then you could slide it up and down your belt always knowing exactly where the center of the belt is in an instant. Just a suggestion.

    • @jakeufford7356
      @jakeufford7356 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just use a wing divider and set that up at half. Maybe if punching holes took longer I could build a jig for it but punching holes is only around 5-10 minutes of the overall process

      I use 8/9oz Hermann oak for the top and 2/3 oz Hermann oak for the liner. Another good place to get it is from Springfield leather. For the Chicago screws I get them from Tandy leather but that’s because I have a store local to me. I’m sure you can order those from either Montana leather or Springfield. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with and hope this helps!

So i’m wanting to start my own western clothing line and obviously i want to have some leather tooled belts with my clothes, if you are a business in making belts, how do you have people order them ?
