My turning journey began in 1986 when I started a 5 year production turning apprenticeship. I was trained in all aspects of turning in many different materials and enjoyed my time learning so much, it became an addiction! I now count myself very lucky to be able to travel the world doing what I love, demonstrating and teaching my skills to others, embarking on their own turning journey.
Turning A Palm Bowl
Today I turn a bit of Palm into a bowl , we look at the pitfalls of turning palm and why all palm is not the same. Farmer Tom asks some questions in your absence, but if you have any others drop them in the comments below and I'll get back to you! Enjoy!

Hollowing With Woodcut ProForme
มุมมอง 8K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to my workshop! This video is all about hollow forms. I’m turning an open hollow form here, so we can get the camera in to see what is going on and show all the pitfalls you’ll encounter when turning a hollow form. I’m using my favoured Woodcut ProForme tools @woodcut but I’ll show you other tools and various techniques to take your hollowing turning to the next level! This video is pac...
Lovely little vases …. Will defo have a at that 👍🙂
Really great demo and instruction. Very professionally done. Thank you, great project also.
Brilliant Colwin Thank you
A most enjoyable session , looking forward for the finished piece
Colwin, what wood did you use for this please ?
Hi there this was Amerrello
That looks amazing.
👌👍
I have noticed that you seem to prefer a “bottom feeder” for the bottom of a bowl. Other people I have seen on You Tube e.g. Richard Raffan use a rounded scraper. Is it personal preference which to use or are there other reasons to choose one rather than the other.
If you are thinking of live evening videos I would prefer 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
You were going to give sizes ?
Sorry about the Agave root Colwin, I couldn't turn it either
Hi..thats real interesting..just cant believe you can turn palm.. it dose look good..bit softer than the woods here..DAVID. AUSTRALIA..ex.. GLOUCESTER.. WEST WALES..
Beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing how this palm finishes after it has dried a bit. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks for mentioning speed and the dangers of an exploding bowl. A few months ago and ten stitches in my arm later… I learned the hard way!
Are palms more closely related to grasses and plantains than "real" trees? This might account for the differences in turning characteristics.
Great video Colwin &Tom
Loverly video, you two😊. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
Hello Colwin and Tom, great session really enjoyed the live video.
Hi Colwin, Tom and everyone.
Looks great!
Thanks Colwin - butiful🦊
Really good.gives a lot of inspiration.
Hi Colwin. I have a challenge for you… something I’ve not yet seen is a vase encapsulated by wood but not only that, it should have open sections so you can see through it. In my mind this feels like it should be a)doable and b) really interesting. I’m thinking a slightly pear-shaped vase so the neck is thinner meaning the wooden part is permanently attached. What do you think?
Who would have thought the only TH-camr my wife would know by voice alone would be you, lol. Great to see you turning again, you’ve inspired so much of the work I do (and tools I buy) Cheers
Superb! thank you
That bowl looks awesome.
An excellent demo Colwin, very informative and enjoyable. Cheers. Mike
Really nice!! What kind of bevel is grinded on the bowl gauge?
55 degrees on most of my gouges except for bottom feeders
@@ColwinWay and just a 'normal' grond, not like a swept back or so?
Hi Colwin, another great video, but something is wrong with the sound all the way through. It’s constantly clipped and over modulated. Maybe you have a line-out from mike going into a mike-in instead of line-in? The distortion on both your and tom’s voice (his is worse) makes it a difficult listen which is a real shame. Anyway, love the new channel and thank you for being an inspiration to newbie turners like me
Always love your videos and teaching methods! I love this idea for this type of bowl. Can’t wait for you to come back to Nick Agars school for another class. Hope you’re in one of the classes that you said Nick was posting this month for his school.
Really great to see you make this! Just wonderful curves. I would be happy with a 1/3 scale model to save you some shipping cost. -Kay
No worries Kay I’ll make it extra special
Very nice Colwyn.
It's a good idea for the osage orange scraps I have lying around. Thanks Colwin.
Nicely done 👍
Hi Colwin and team, another great instructional video thank you
Colwin that was a smashing job mate well done, I just love these wee birds
Terry at Chesnuts products recommends a piece of 80 grit paper stuck to a piece of flat timber, I tried it and it cleaned up the mops to a unbelievable level.
Thanks for this, I’ll pass it on in the next live
I've been turning for 8 years and carving birds for 20 years. Here is my King Fisher.
Great video & information - thanks Colwin
can you show us how to do the finish with the gloss finish many thanks
Yes, it was an acrylic lacqur
Very nice piece but I would love to see it with a more complex base. My idea would be to have the base be a larger, key dish-type thing where the bird is hitting the water in say the top left corner of a non-circular ‘pond’. I don’t know how would achieve that on a lathe but I’d really like to see you try it 🙏
Why not, most of my demos start with me not really knowing where I’m going 😬
Great demo. Very interesting project
Really great fun project. Looks great
Very nice 👍
Another great informative content 👍.Colwin are you stocking blanks at your shop ?or is is it just finished pieces?
Just finished pieces
Great demo lovely piece's of wood
Another wonderful project and teaching video, Colwin. The dust collector makes a loud and persistent noise that is annoying. I appreciate the need for dust control. Perhaps a different microphone would help with this noise. while still keeping your commentary so clear.. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback, I changed the levels as people were asking to hear more of the tool sounds but I’ll try and get it in the middle
That is cool. If you added a recess in the base, and glue a magnet in to have it on the top of the fridge or some place a magnet would stick.
Excellent turning Colwin. Bird and base are both wonderful. Tremendous piece.
Really a fun project.
