A Tour of the MBTA's Silver Line: Not Quite BRT
I decided on a whim to explore the Silver Line on a surprisingly nice October day. Join me as I ride all of the major routes and showcase why the Silver Line isn’t quite BRT but is interesting in its own right. I encourage those who are interested to read more on the history of the Silver Line as its origins are complicated and there were many design decisions and compromises involved that are outside the scope of this video.

New England Loop: An MBTA, PVTA, and CTRail Journey

I wanted to travel from Boston to Springfield, MA using only public transit - no Peter Pan, no Greyhound, no Amtrak. I also wanted to try out CT Rail. In this video, I attempt to loop around New England going to Springfield and back using the most public transit that I can. With a couple of tight connections in the schedules, this was sure to be a fun challenge. Full route, as originally schedu...

Why not just get off the orange line at state to get on the blue line? :)
Glad you enjoyed Amherst! It really is a beautiful city. Also, if you ever go back, all busses operated by UMass Transit (one of the three-ish? really four) operators that comprise the PVTA, are free! all the time! you can tell they are UMass transit since they will have no letter before the number. Though, that being said, all PVTA transit will be free from 1 November 2024 until 30 June 2025.
One day Traditional Dining will come back to the Cardinal instead of the limited microwave Flexible Dining menu.
As a Vermonter, I wish we had such lovely public transportation, or really any viable public transportation. Thanks for the ride!
The Silver Line has potential to become a great BRT. The Busway along the SL3 route is great. But the roadway in the underground Busway needs to be repaved and maybe one day when Boston recovers from their Big Dig related nightmares extend the tunnel as promised to unify all branches of the Silver Line network. The MBTA desperately needs an orbital route to relieve pressure from Subways carrying passengers downtown to make transfers and the Silver Line could fill that route. Fun fact: because the Massachusetts Port Authority subsides the free rides airport passengers enjoy when taking the SL1 to South Station it is said the Silver Line is technically the only MBTA route that breaks even in operating costs.
I’m thankful that trains (not subway) still exist to this day: they’re such beautiful & comfortable yet efficient transportation method. Just hop on and don’t worry about the traffic, aggressive drivers, etc!!! It’s so sad that cars (and the ugly & polluting infrastructure built around them, highways, broken neighborhoods, etc) almost killed all public transportation entirely 🥲
I enjoyed your scenic route that you took Amtrak cardinal go to pass my house at 1:30 2:00 in the morning I wonder when they're ever going to fix that wheel I hear that going to click it and clickety click when it passes my house.
PHILLY!!!! SEPTA!!!!
Awesome video would love to see more vids like this.
Love riding the cardinal from Dc to Clifton forge
You forgot to include the Silver Line
Bro they finna makin it more problematic 😭
Ik this video is so old but I've driven the PVTA bus 3301 in the thumbnail. I love the hybrids ❤
you should do septa in philadelphia
Just int the future you could have transferred to a E train - Medford hillside, at lechemere, and done that after you finished the D to union square and then back tracked to park on the E branch .
you didn't really complete it, the silver line has underground stops too
so it kind of qualifies as a subway
That's like saying the septa route 66 bus is a trolley because it has wires
It's too bad you ended up missing some of West Virginia's best scenery, due to darkness. You would have been traveling through the New River Gorge at this time, and the train stations in Prince and Thurmond are close to where I live.
Awesome video ! Very enjoyable
Such a cool experience! Thanks for posting! I'm planning on taking the LSL in the near future!
Great video. I like seeing real time tours. Im planning on going to Boston for a couple days in a few weeks. I will be relying on public transit to get around the city and the outskirts. Can i just pay with my Google pay on my phone or do i have to download an app for it to work. Or do i have to purchase a charlie card? Tia.
4:40 no way he just said Ohio or am I just hearing stuff
What town did we start at?
Portsmouth is my hometown station. Love the cardinal.
Very good.😊😊😊
Well, at least you got your roomette with a view Amtrak promised. You paid buco bucks for your ticket showing you'd have access to the dining car, and a hot shower. You got neither! Amtrak can take your money then just casually say no dining car? What a rip👎! You need to get compensated for not getting what your reservation clearly stated you'd get. People would think twice if ticket had in small print that there's a chance no dining car, and oh, no hot water!
No hot water in shower? We will call you Stinky. LOL
Run it daily and get a full service diner. 👍🏽😎🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
I was trying to watch your video, but the camera jerking around was getting me dizzy. You need to seriously invest in stabilizers for your equipment. I have watch numerous others that do train reviews and theirs is easy to watch with smooth motions.
Lol stay mad
So you are traveling sleeper in Chicago Union Station there is a Shower's at the Metropolitan Lounge
very cool
I'm riding the Cardinal at the beginning of April, I'm so excited!
I'll be riding it end of April this year.
I know it's for the memes... but it's a great little tour :~)
I totally wanna try doing something like this. But there's always some line out.... Each line has its perks: Announcements -- Blue Line. Smooth/calming. "City Feel" -- Orange Line. Dark, cold, always shit going down on the OL Cars -- Red Line. Oldies but goodies. +1 Festive carpeted seats... Views -- Green Line. Greeeeeeeen. Time travel -- Mattapan
I call that my home! Center of Massachusetts north of Worcester
Many years ago I rode the elevated trains, And trackless trolly buses in the 1960s. Bus fare was 25 cents.
Great video but damn you need a Merrimacker to tell you how to pronounce stuff lol
I used to work for LRTA haha great people to work for you boarded one of my favorite buses 1503 drives so nicely! It has the loudest turbo still I'm so happy to hear her again
You should try this during the weekday when the times are more consistent but other than that, props!
I was surprised to see that the arrival and departure melodies of the Boston subway are exactly the same as those of Fallout 4. A very well-made game. Would love to travel around Boston to see the sights in and around Boston to find spots that match the game.
I’ve yet to take the train on the east coast but the stops in New York and Philadelphia remind me of subway stops here in Chicago.
Bro... at 17:53 in your video, it's probably farmer beehives. Yea your right about Culpepper has national cemetery... but your vid as you say it, at 17:53... looks like just farmer beehives for their crops.
just get $1 flip flops for shower. I learned this tip 10 years ago for my annual sleeper Chicago to Tucson.
Looks like the Cardinal now has the full viewliner ii sleeping car.
pretty sure all of the Long distance routes out of New York have them at this point, or a mixture of the I's and II's
@@himbourbanist most likely I think crescent will also get them as well
I'll be taking the same train this August. I can't wait!
I’m going in early June and I’m super excited too. First time traveling Amtrak by myself and first time taking a train since I was nine.
Nice video! I hope to ride the Cardinal sometime. Thanks
Transit doesn't seem too bad up in the Merrimack Valley. The bus driver wearing the Santa hat was nice. Bus drivers who do things like that are always nice.
Trickle of water and hair in the shower drain…meal menus by telephone….not good, and the Cardinal only runs three days a week. C’mon Amtrak you can do better.
That's my Station.....34th St..AMTRAK
Did you like the jointed rail section starting before Charlottesville, VA to Clifton Forge, VA?
The cardinal hasn't had a full service dining car since the early to mid 2000s.
