I make electronic music and media art and share various live sessions and informal documentation of work here
Patchbay : DrumStation, Pulse2, Blofeld, Digitone, Quadraverb, Circuit Tracks, SE-50
This dub techno session uses a patchbay to send various instruments to various effects and processes. The stab is the Pulse 2 through the Digitone audio input and effects. The pad is from the Blofeld through the Circuit Tracks sidechain. MIDI CCs are sent via a dedicated MIDI out on the Circuit Tracks to control effects parameters on the QuadraVerb. The SE-50 effects are also sequenced this way. The sub bass and clap are from the Digitone.

A 145bpm breakbeat/hardcore session. Digitone, MMT-8 and Beatstep Pro sequence most patterns here - the Nord is the deep FM bass, the pad is from the A-Station, the Blofeld is the crunchy stab. The MicroFreak controls the filtered breakbeat as a sequence. DrumStation manages the 909 kit with live fills from the 808 kit. Live mutes with 2 hands in realtime is a riot. Tract : live test of MIDI to laser/oscilloscope input using Processing and XYscope/MIDIbus libraries
มุมมอง 86หลายเดือนก่อน
Live incoming MIDI events trigger associated laser/oscilloscope events. 8 laser/scope 'treatments' are mapped to MIDI channels and notes - here specific drum parts are mapped. Playing a note holds and animates the treatment. Playing other notes creates interesting visual overlaps and interference. I wrote a Processing app to manage MIDI input using MIDIbus library and do the mapping. The XYscop...
BlackBox : live MIDI to oscilloscope using Processing, XYscope, Minim and MIDIbus libraries

This is another test of my control system for MIDI triggered vector drawing to oscilloscope using Processing, XYscope, Minim and MIDIbus libraries. This is running into a software oscilloscope and screen recorded and additive comped on top of live performance. Specific MIDI events trigger specific animations. Runs well on a fast analogue scope in XY mode. Some points reduction required before I...
Flak : real-time MIDI controlled oscilloscope drawing using Processing, MIDIbus, XYscope and Minim
มุมมอง 1042 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a further development and proof of concept video demo of a custom MIDI-controlled oscilloscope/laser performance application. MIDI events trigger vector sequences and these are independently mixed to generate a synthesised PWM mix through XYscope and Minim to drive an oscilloscope in XY mode or an ILDA laser.

This is a 120bpm 60% shuffled session with the Nord driving the main lead and drums from DrumStation, Circuit Tracks and RD-6. The Beatstep Pro send a gate to the Keystep 37 to advance the arp which is 3 drum hits held in a chord to produce randomised fills. The A-Station is the warm pad sound - I open the filter envelope manually. The Circuit Tracks manages main drums and also the A-Station pa...
MIDI to oscilloscope development test PIP

Here is a Picture in Picture example of my Processing application which converts incoming MiDI to oscilloscope using the MIDIbus and XYscope libraries. When attached to an oscilloscope in XY mode we get these animations (this is a software oscilloscope I use for development). Sounds and MIDI are generated from the Circuit Tracks (main kick and drum parts and sub for main synth line. The higher ...
MIDI to oscilloscope live test: Elektron Digitone, Waldorf Pulse 2

This is a live session where I am testing live MIDI input into a custom Processing Sketch using the MIDIbus library - I generate various animated vector treatments and output these through the XYscope library as PWM audio to patch into an oscilloscope in X-Y mode (or a laser!). This is a full screen simulation using the Oscilloscope app and sending audio internally using Blackhole. These vector...

I made a thick FM arp on the Digitone and jammed with it. The later bassline is from the Monologue. A-Station is the gliding random arp line. The thick pad is from the SY85 into the Circuit Tracks effects and sidechain. It also drives the main dubby drums. 909 kit is from the DrumStation through QuadraVerb effects. I think the timing is out (Waveform I use for recording seems to add a bit of a ...

I decided to let this session run and not rush to finish - stuff comes and goes and some works and some not it seems. The main arp line is from the Digitone through its own effects. There are 2 sets of drums sequences here - Circuit Tracks runs the thicker dub techno sequence and the DrumStation runs hihats and claps and is passing through the QuadraVerb effects and mixed. The Nord Lead is the ...

strange I have the same firmware 1.25 and I have exactly the same settings : Global clock is set to Auto and Blofeld connected via midi to a device sending midi clock. Arp doesn't sync. It seems sync on the Multi mode Tempo, and on Multi mode appears to have still its specific tempo. Is there any other setting in particular to the Multi mode that can change external sync ?
Hmm I don’t know sorry! I don’t use multi mode. Seems to be different experiences for people. Perhaps it’s to do with particular MIDI setups different people have. Next time I’m messing with the arp on the Blofeld I’ll report back anything I notice
By far the best MMT-8 video I’ve seen on TH-cam. It’s an amazing machine in combination with anything multitimbral
Hey! Many thanks and glad you like it! It is great machine - very solid and dependable. I enjoy its general simplicity and manual muting and Song mode is very powerful and fast to work with. I also dig its industrial design and form factor
@@quietandpeacefulman same, I bought an RK-008 and now I rarely use my mmt-8, glad that the workflow still lives on
@Ancaja123 yes well I now own a Digitone, Beatstep Pro and a Keystep 37 and other sequencers but it sits at the centre of my setup and is almost always used in every track - love the thing
super track <3
Thanks! Glad you like it
Good track. I think I hear some house influence in there.
Thanks! That clap sound is very house, and the kick drum too, and various other 808 and 909 kit elements. It’s all shuffling at 56% which also gives a housey feel.
There is no light and text on the screen of MMT and there is no red led ilght on channel and on play buttons. Maybe it can work without electricity....hm...
Hah! Yes wonder why? It is a very dim LCD screen so wouldn’t expect to be able to read it from this video. But would have expected the red LEDs to be visible and they’re not. It was very bright that day. Who knows. You’ll need to take my word for it that it is live and real-time! I’m too busy to fake videos unlike many others out there it seems
@@quietandpeacefulman Clear answer, I understand, it is accepted. Thank you!
This is so dope.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Why did anyone stop making these. It was like my first toy as a kid and have two still today
They were an unusual part-toy/part musical instrument and due to their limitations and unusual workflow are of interest to electronic musicians today. The only missing link is the ability to sync with other instruments - beyond its scope and price point. But I really like the analogue raw sounds it makes and the hihats accent programming is something special and particular to its sound. Sampling instruments and phrases from it is the only way to implement it in a modern setup. I guess something like the Arturia Drumbrute is a modern sonic equivalent or a Nord Drum - or of course any modern drum pad system with the ability to speak to a DAW. Personally I try to avoid DAW workflows and don’t even use the pads on the unit and just enjoy its intrinsic quirks, limitations and ways of working.
I really like that drum beat
Thanks! Glad you like it. It’s basically an Ableton drum kit being triggered by a random arpeggiator from an Akai MIDI controller. Creates endless variation within a drum kit if known sounds
Sounds good!
Great job there again 👌
Glad you like it - thanks!

Gorgeous. You're 30 years too late. Each of the tunes you've posted here so far would have been its own 12 inch vinyl release.
Thanks! In a parallel universe I didn’t have to work full-time in design to support myself and instead made music with much of the same gear
Stunning!
Nice one Ian! Glad you like it. Performance in summer hopefully

One of my favourites among your tracks, beautiful sound design that doesn't sacrifice musicality.
Very kind words. Thanks!
Nice work mate, love finding more gear nuts making ace jams. You get extra points for the oscilloscope... dig the build of this, pads holding it all together. Peace ✌️
Hah! Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did making it. I love an analogue scope - I have 6 heh! I will be uploading an expanded mix of this track to Soundcloud soon and will post link in the video description. Thanks again!

As the Voidstrider glided through the shifting fabric of reality, the ship's hull liquesced into a kaleidoscope of colours, refracting past and future into variegated splinters. Elyria gazed at the holo-map, her hand tracing ethereal constellations that charted the bleeding peripheries of spacetime.
Yes Andrew. Yes to it all
very nice. soothing.
Thanks
Nice kick from the Digitone. Great to read about the ESI again. I have one, recently purcased, with floppy emulator and turbo installation. I seldom play with it but would like a workflow where its easy to import/sample loops and get the loops perfect. The jog wheel is a pain though...
Hi. Yes that Digitone is great for kicks. I often use the Esi to simply sample a stereo input then trim and filter etc. it’s possible to set it up as an 8 separate out beast with the Turbo (many early jungle records made this way). I have also done midi sample dump to it after prepping samples on a computer (mono only). However I like using the pitch bend wheel to scrub back and forth over the sample when editing to audition a bit like a DJ scrubbing back a record - takes a little getting used to but fast and hands on and away from the damn computer. The Esi workflow is initially quirky but you soon memorise key presses to avoid using the jog wheel too much. Good luck!
I’m feeling BOC x Wagonchrist?
I guess the chords are typical BOC style with less wow and flutter and Wagon Christ more the sparse percussive bits here. I’m not deliberately emulating or whatever - just comes out this way
Absolutely rinsin!
beautiful!
Thanks!
Excellent, as always.
Thanks for your kind words. Glad you like it!
Great as always! I might have asked this earlier or read a similar question but its' interesting to follow your tracks and see what stuff you use in each recording. I see the Drumstation gets to participate regularly but also Circuit tracks or Model:cycles and rd-6. Is the drum station mostly doing the kick then among all other drum gear? How important to the sound is the Drumstation? Does it side chain things? I have heard good things about it, I have a TR6s myself but the question is what I am missing out compared to older drum stuff..
Hi - glad you like it! I have a restricted palette (although it’s not really restricted with some of these synths as they are so flexible). I like it that way! So the DrumStation is almost always involved just because it is an 808 and 909 with extra editing features and 6 separate outs which go into my Mackie desk! I have various drum maps set up on the Beatstep Pro for kits. This means I can eq and add send effects to discreet parts which allows me to expand these classic sounds. It’s a great unit. It doesn’t do any side chain or anything like that - no effects out of the box. I ramp up input gain on the kick input on the mixer and cut the slider to compensate and makes the kick thicker. I often send hihats and cymbals to the QuadraVerb or SE-50 effects. I no longer have the Model:Cycles but have a Digitone in its place. This is an amazing FM box of tricks with great external MIDI control tracks. I use this to set up conditional trigs and complex detailed percussion bits. I use a send from my desk to send to the stereo (or dual mono) audio input of the Digitone and can sequence and apply effects. The Circuit tracks is great for mono sample sequencing (drums and breaks) random/probabilistic sequencing of external instruments and 2 polyphonic Nova synth instruments. It also has stereo audio in and does side-chain and effects (used in this track on pad). RD-6 snare and clap are nice as are hihats. Another key instrument I use is the Nord Lead 2X. And Blofeld. Fact is I try to avoid using them all in every track but some are staples now. Hope this is useful info!
I know I’m on the right side of TH-cam when stuff like this gets recommended.
Some Born Slippy going on in there.
