The racing world according to Jesse Prather, or at least that's the way I do it and it seems pretty successful, so I am going to keep on doing it that way.
From ground-up chassis builds, engine development, dyno tuning, and cage building to smoother shifting transmissions and finding the smallest advantage that could be the difference between first and second place. This is the home for national championship road racing development on TH-cam.

SHOP TOUR: Go FAST, Break LAST!
In racing, I try to have the best parts do nothing but the job they were intended for, and this is one of those parts that just didn't want to be a member of that team. The bad news is that the part that broke is still stuck in the differential, so a quick change is now a long project. It's a good thing we have a few spares!

SHOP TOUR - All the Space Needed in a Race Shop (for today anyway)

Sometimes, the shop looks like it is too small for much of anything, then other times, it looks like the shop is a giant space. Don't worry, my race shop won't look like this for very long! Watch till the end and see what @sccaofficial decided to send me! Hint: National Championship Racing Trophies are huge! Ooopps - Did I say too much?

What was thought to be pretty bad, might just be OK on Cam's BMW after seeing the head gasket was giving up inbetween the cylinders, but even better that there is no warping of the head of the block. Now, after a thorough cleaning, the head will be reinstalled, while in the car, thanks to my super trick magnet trick for the lifters/buckets. But first, these new MCS triple shock absorbers have s...

I love bodywork so much that I am asking for your help in finding me a door sill for the MAZDA2. Yeap, I can make one to match, but, boy, would it be easier if I had a friend out there that had a wrecked Mazda2 in their yard that had a perfect door sill the they wouldn't mind cutting out for me! If you are that person - hit me up and save me from putting in the time to manufacture this thing my...

You always try to be as clean as possible, but when you put your intake back on at the finish of tech during the SCCA Runoffs, and you can still smell the champagne from the podium, crazy things can happen. This time, the owner is pretty sure a small rock fell into the intake. Thankfully, the car has not been started, and I get to dive in and see what I can find. Let's hope I don't have to go t...

Some times, there is a bit of a lull after the SCCA Runoffs, but this year is proving to be different. There is lots of activity in the shop, and some parts are coming from Mazda Headquarters to get the Mazda2 fixed and ready for Road Atlanta in March. In the meantime, the Acura Integra is getting reassembled from the tech tear-down, and Stephens Miata is getting some next-level upgrades.
2024 SCCA Runoffs Win - Flag to Flag in the H Production Mazda2!

Some races are easy. This race was nothing close to that! The field was strong, and Chuck, who had qualified first, was on his A-game. As you can see in the video, it took every bit of driving prowess to stay ahead of him. Error-free driving, it was not, but it was super close, and it paid off in the end, even if we had some contact in Canada Corner. Just goes to show what's possible when you d...

It has been an incredible year of racing for my customers. The @SCCAOfficial Runoffs were no different, and it is phenomenal that the top 10 finishers in F Production were all powered by JPM Engines, which I personally built! SHOP TOUR - They Don't Make Engine Blocks Like This Anymore!

I personally haven't seen things done this way in an engine, but Honda had some smart individuals who decided this was the way to do it way back then! As I searched around for parts, I quickly learned that the aftermarket is not that big for these engines either, so I get to make some custom pistons to stick in this block!

Oh you _did_ go floating hubs on that RX-7... interesting.
speedway closed there doors ---oh noooo
They were bought and will have all the same stuff for sale again soon, I am told.
Great video!!!! Excited for next weeks video 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks for watching. Always good stuff going on!
Talked to them 1st of the week. Bought all stock and proprietary info.
Good to know!
Congratulations Jesse! I'm sure the buyer is thrilled.
Congrats on the sale, what an awesome vehicle! Thanks for the behind the scenes look at BAT! That was pretty interesting.
Glad you liked it!
wow wonderfully done! Just one question, would you worry when engine still on car and drill burrs might fall back inside engine?
Is pressing the bearing into the tub of grease then flipping it and spin it good enough for packing it?
The right way, the wrong way, and the needlessly complicated German way. I understand that things time out. On a cylinder head like that SB2 unit, what are the areas of concern?
The engine builder basically says he has new heads and gets them CNC ported now so what we're expecting is more performance from 20 year newer technology. We will see!
I'll be bringing you something to fill up that empty space in 3 weeks. Lol
I worked as a Audi/VW tech for 47 years and yes Germans do things differently, but usually in a good way.
Nothing wrong with filling the hub cavity with some grease after properly packing the bearing.
Can you post a link to the hood light?
I actually just googled it and found it on Amazon. There are a bunch of options so pick the one that looks best to you!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!! I would love to see how you sand cylinder heads. Im interested in doing my own work and alway want to learn more. 🙏🏻
I use a piece of glass about 3/16 thick and obviously perfectly flat with a piece of 220 sand paper. Works perfectly.
@ hey thanks so much I for sharing your knowledge. I love learning from your channel. 🙏🏻
Jesse, as a transmission builder for the Ruck's and Sam Myers and others, I love this, congrats! 2017 runoffs STL I got 1-2 as a trans builder as well as Rucks Daytona win in 2015. It is hard for some to understand the pride that goes into some simple builds, but I feel it.
Watching from New Zealand. Enjoyed all the tech talk.
Awesome! Thank you!
I watched this video before I did my oil pan, but I didn't follow it to a T. Lo and behold the oil pan leaked. It's been 4 months since then and I am finally trying again. This time I will follow every direction. Like you said, we learn most of our lessons the hard way!
Great advice on the fuel cell foam! It’s crazy how many racers have no idea it needs replaced periodically. In the formula car the cell actually failed while sitting in the garage untouched. Leaked gasoline all over the garage floor. That’s how I learned that lesson. The next car I bought I asked about the foam. It had NEVER been changed and it was 15 years old! The guy sounded really doubtful about it so I showed him. Sure enough, disintegrated foam through the whole fuel system so I was able to negotiate quite a bit.
I use a calibrated wooden dowel as my fuel dip stick
Not uncommon at all, but did you know ATL offered this?
Nice job as always
What is your technique for "sanding" the block and keeping debris and grit out of the engine?
Good question. Lots of brake clean afterwards is the key to keep it clean. Obviously it's not as good as a fresh rebuild on the engine stand but it does work.
Which underhood work light did you get? I assume it uses rechargeable batteries. USB-C connection?
Well done!
Great video! Thanks from Sweden 👍🇸🇪
Thanks for the video
I can remember my father telling me the best way to the finish was to complete one job at a time! Still try to do that!
Jesse, Bryon Prokopf in St. Louis has a parts car Mazda 2 and I’m sure it has the rocker you need. I’ll send you his contact info. He may have a door, not sure.
I like to start my rebuilding the week after my last event Then you can't say i didn't have enough time!
On the 1.6 diff, do you do anything to make it stronger? Those early diffs are notorious for busting the ring and pinion.
No, all you can really do is make sure it's set up correctly. Their just not large enough to take a bunch of power.
You may have to consider buying a wrecked or flood car from COPART and making it your donor. It's only a matter of time till you need another body part.
Did that for many years! But now I use the BluePoint packer.
Not to be too critical, but the premise of using "torque indicator" markers and pens is to show that a fitting has been properly torqued, and give visual evidence if it has migrated; the idea of marking anything that has merely been tightened, to some vague, ambiguous level that has no relationship to actual specification torque values seems really contrarian, and implies the user holds a set of ideas about being superior to the actual engineers who designed and created specs in the factory.
Another fun Shop Tour. Happy Halloween and enjoy the party!
Great shop tour, really enjoy Halloween parties, but it’s a long drive from SE Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
If you came to one, you would make it a standard trip!
I enjoyed the SCCA calendar for years, to bad they ended
Great racing at RA. Congratulations Thanks for all the videos on a regular basis. Do you winterize the race cars, coolant, etc. even if the cars are stored inside?
I do not. The shop never gets below 60 degrees.
Always enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing
Your podcasts are always on my watch list. I'm almost finished with watching the run off races for this year. And there is one thing that I question and ask for your input. Why all the full coarse yellows? Back in the day {70s and 80s} the yellow was for the effected area and then back to green. There seems to be a lot of races that finish following the pace car. I'll bet you and your fellow drivers would much prefer to have the opportunity to race for the checker.
Just like a lot of things, safety standards have changed over the years. Doing “hot pulls” with an active track under green flag conditions is pretty rare anymore. Of course, all racers want to be racing for the win and not following the pace car under the checkered flag. I appreciate you watching the channel - always trying to motivate people to built things better and show what’s possible, even if only a little time is available (15 minutes a day!).
@@jpm sometimes, 15 minutes a day is all we have, keep up the good work, this is an under appreciated channel.
Much appreciated. It’s just me doing things the way I have found success. Maybe the entire world doesn’t need to know all the ways I have learned!
Here in the UK there are many places were they pulled cars out of the gravel under local yellows but recently there was an incident in a premier race series that caused that to be removed for a while at my local track. The problem here and I presume in other countries is that drivers just don't seem to slow down under local yellows and see it as an opportunity to close up rather than respecting the marshals and recovery crews. The race officials then have no choice to put out the safety car or, in series where it's used, a full course yellow/code 60.
What's your take on using sealant with a cork oil pan gasket? I've got a Ford Courier with the stock Mazda 1.8 and the factory manual calls out putting the OEM Mazda sealant on both the pan and the block. Have you seen that work well in your experience or just use one or the other?
I’ve resealed my motor 4 times and am about to give up on this motor. Every seal keeps blowing after around 500 miles. valve cover, cas doing, cam seals, front and rear main, and oil pan. Now it also appears the head gasket failed and is ejecting oil as well.dont get what the issue is
I am trying to rebuild my EJ25 engine for my Suby and this job is killing me. I just can't get em and damaged the rings so getting news soon and we'll try again....but thanks for the video.
Great win Jesse!
Any chance you could elaborate a little on the water pump belt a cog setup on the FP miata you have there?
It's a cog drive that slows down the water pump 49%. Decreases drag as well.
Thats way too much😂😂😂😂
Congratulations on your Runoff's win. This is a gem of a channel that should be getting much more attention.
Good to keep busy, idle hands are the devil’s playground.
Well done!
Continue to pack grease from one side only till it oozes out the other side is the correct way.
Just keep going from the back side until it comes out of the top, then there's no chance of gaps. It obviously moves around so it's not critical, but why not do it right to begin with?
