1974 Nylint Ford Model T Restoration - Custom Blue Metallic Powdercoat!
Today, we have a fantastic restoration for you. This is a 1974 Nylint Model T. We found this crusty toy sitting on the back shelf of one of the stores at our local flea markets. For this resotoration, we did not want to put it back to its bland orange and black paint scheme. We decided to use this fantastic blue metallic powder coat that our friends at Prismatic Powders sent over to us! We also thought that the front end was very basic, due to the grill being completly black. Although that matched the astetic of the original Ford Model T, we had to do something special for this custom Roadster. Plus, who doesn't love a old-school hotrod! Feel free to sit back, relax, and join us as this old Roadster gets a one-off restoration.
Let us know what you all think, should we do more of these Nylint models on this channel? Maybe some more of the Hotrods? Possibly something other than toys?
We also wanted to give a special shoutout to Cerakote and Prismatic Powders for helping out the channel and providing us with some great products. We have been using Cerakote way before we decided to post our restorations on TH-cam. They truly have a superb product that works on everything from automotive trim, all the way to the windows and tires on our toys.
Prismatic Powders also has some of the coolest colors, and most durable powdercoats on the market. There is a suitable color for just about every project that you could do. Make sure to check out their products in the links below!

Today, we have unique restoration for you. This is a 1971 Tonka Scrambler "Hot Horse", also known as model 250. The Scramblers were a line of toys produced by Tonka, in the early 1970s, that had small flywheel motors. What was so awesome about these flywheel motors, was that they were pretty powerful. All you would have to do is force down on the car, push it forward, and let it rip. The Scramb...

What an amazing transformation. The powder goes on yellow, but it’s a color changing green/yellow. Love it! Thanks Nick!
Thanks for stopping by!
Great job, love the colors! The metallic finish is awesome! Tip of the cap to Prismatic Powders. Looks like a great product. Foiling has always spooked me a bit, but you made it look easy. Thanks Nick!
Thanks! Foiling is a very intimidating process, and we are still learning how to do it ourselves, but it is not anything to be scared of. The first time that we tried it was on the 1976 Tonka Fire Pumper restoration, and it has only gotten easier since then.
That was very impressive. I have seen metallic foil used in other types of restorations (e.g. guilded picture frames), but never on a toy. It was a clever solution to the corroded hubcaps and it really enhanced the look of the front grill.
Thank You! We’ve messed around with foils in the past, especially on our 1976 Tonka Fire Pumper. It’s a really funny and neat material to work with.
How would you replace a missing windshield?
We typically find replacement windshields on eBay. The only difficult part is making sure that you purchase the correct windshield for your model year. Not all the windshields are interchangeable.
What is the rivet tool? Called and where can I get one? I see everyone that does quality restorations has one of those, probably need a source for the replacement rivets or whatever they are called.thanks, I'm just beginning doing these so I am lacking on terminologies sorry.
Thanks for stopping by! The tool you’re referring to is known as a “Semi-tubular Rivet Tool” and the Semi-tubular rivets come in all different lengths and widths. You can purchase them on a couple different websites online. Our tool specifically is the “Pintonka Rivet Tool.” We like this kit because it is very thin (allowing for a further reach), it comes with the tool, a variety of different rivets (50 pieces), and a storage box. These tools are a little pricey, averaging around $100, but they really do make the restoration look fantastic.
@Nixshop thank you much.
I have some toys like that I want to sell
That’s awesome! We have always found that the local flea markets and eBay are the best place to sell our projects.
Wow! Love the color and all the personal touches. And the gadget that cut the bed mat, very cool. Great job and thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thank You!
MArvelous transformation.

Always a great video. Thanks!
Thanks for stopping by!
The paint looks amazing. I wish that this could be done to my Toyota RAV 4 (it's a boring white colour from the factory). 😊 I also really like this channel's focus on more unusual and obscure vehicles/toys. I have never seen a Corvair pickup truck -- just the sedan and, IIRC, a van.
Thanks, we appreciate that a lot! We really enjoy the obscure toys because you just don’t see them that often. They deserve just as much love as any of the more popular toys!
I am fortunate to have this truck in my Nylint Econoline collection. I learned that this truck was sold alone, or with a trailer and animals. I added a trailer and animals to my truck. Nice job
We actually found the animal trailer for this Econoline, and it’s going to be one of our upcoming videos! We are just looking to see if we can find any of the animals that go in it.
I pick up the animals anytime I run across them. There was a decent flea market outside Athens Georgia where I found many. That flea market is no longer good for old toys. A company called heartland made the livestock. Granted, the plastic thickness of the animals made for Nylint was thinner than the animals sold under heartland name. The truck bed has less room in the bed than you think when you put animals in the bed.
I have a posted video of my Econoline truck and trailer.
I have a video posted called Nylint horse van. In that video, you can see both the Nylint horse, (tan) and the heartland horse , either white or beige
The color over chrome powder coat is amazing! Big fan of the chrome powder coat. I’ve never seen it up close, but in video it looks like it was dipped and plated. Great job! Love the bow tie too. 😁
This chrome powder really does look like actual chrome when you’re up close. It’s pretty amazing stuff!
ANother awesome restoration, well done.
Thank you!

Great job as always 😊 Nice touch with the 3D printed safety cones! Thanks Nix!
Thanks for coming back and joining us again!
This is great! I have one of these, leftover from my childhood. I've lost the gear handle, so this video showed my how to dismantle the body. I have both treads, but one has broken. I like your 3D replacement. Thanks for sharing your work!
Glad we could help! If you are looking for a replacement track, we recommend buying a track for a 1960s Tonka Steam Shovel. They fit perfect and are much easier to find than the Marx tracks.
I love this! I am a huge fan of vintage pickup trucks. There are a few still on the road around here, but they are an uncommon sight.
Thank You! Nothing beats the styling of these old pickups.
sir i want you to know that you are very good at what you are doing, this is what i really wanted to do but because of the bills, i need to work, i am so jealous
Anything is possible my friend! We try to keep costs down as much as we can, but we recommend going to your local flea market and trying to find these toys. Our first videos consisted of just taking the toys apart and spray painting them, and if done right, they come out just like the powder coated toys.
Did that have a giraffe with it when new?
This toy did come with a giraffe when it was new! It was about 6 inches tall, and stuck out above the back of the cage. Unfortunately, it is an extremely hard accessory to find.
I do love seeing this generation of toys being restored. As always you do a great job at finding, fixing and preserving. Thank you Nix!
Our Pleasure!
Another great one. Do you keep these on display. It would be neat to see them as a collection. Thanks Nix! 🙂
Right now they are currently on display, but we do eventually plan to sell some. If you’re interested in any of our restorations, shoot us an email at Nixshop1776@gmail.com.
ok thanks
How cool is that? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these before. If I would’ve seen one of those I probably would’ve thought it was a custom, made in the sand box 😅 Great restoration Nix! Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by!
I agree. That powder coat color is really cool! Great job on the restoration. Thank you Nix. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Glen!
I love the paint job! It reminds me of a technique, the proper name of which I do not know. It also involves two layers: a shiny metallic undercoat, followed by a translucent coloured glaze.
Thanks! I know exactly what you’re talking about, but the name slips my mind as well. We find that a lot of the really deep and rich metallic colors that we deal with require the base/clear method.
I still have my little purple one it was played with for many hours and in all that time we still have the white roof too
We had a little purple one as well! It was our fourth video on the channel, but we didn’t have that white roof unfortunately. We had to source one off the internet.
I have to get a pig now!
Disco Pig is the man! He has a new friend coming to the channel in the near future, so stay tuned…
Another fantastic restoration of these little tonkas! The chrome powder coat is so cool. Great job Nix! Good luck on completing the set. 🙂
Thank You!
The final result looks much better than the original, but the Volkswagen Rabbit is inherently an ugly car. Despite being the right age, I have never seen this toy. Tonka did release a series of toy vehicles (trucks and sports cars) called "Clutch Poppers". These could be revved-up and then set off with the press of a button. I had two in about 1980. They seem like a later evolution of the mechanism shown here.
The Clutch Poppers are pretty interesting toys. We have not seen them in person, but we have been keeping an eye out for them. Fun fact, the Clutch Popper and the Quickshifters were offered at the same time, in the late 1970s. The difference between the Clutch Poppers flywheel and the Quickshifters flywheel, is that the Quickshifters will actually shift into second gear when they reach a high enough rpm.
Felipe Si 🙂👍
Gracias por ver el video!
He was in pretty rough condition but thank goodness the flywheel motor worked fine. Very interesting little toy. Great restoration! Can’t wait to see what you find next. Thank you!
Thank you!
The blue looks so much better than the original white colour. Tonka released a similar Pepsi delivery truck a few years later; I had one as a child.
Yep, we know exactly which truck you’re talking about! It came in a blue color that was very similar to our little truck.
Interesting fun fact about how Pepsi got its name 🙂 Great restoration! Looks great next to the Coke truck. Thanks!
Thanks!
Wow. This one was in pretty rough shape. I liked that tool you used to remove the wheels 😀 another fine restoration. Thank you!
