      tarikoplata is definitely a good option here. sometimes even this technique wont be enough to break the grip of a strong committed opponent. when they've gone all in on holding on to their after you've tugged on their arm a couple times, that's the best time to do the tarikoplata.

      like most gi chokes used in the street, you need a lot of thick fabric to make them work. So if you just grab the collar of a regular t-shirt, no it probably won't work. If you can bunch up their entire shirt and make a "rope" to hold on to you can probably get it to work. otherwise, there is a no-gi variation of this move i teach as well that you can do without using their collar. i believe i have a video for the no gi version of this move on my page as well if you want to look it up.

      Yes, there is a variation of the knee on belly set up i do about 50% of the time that works really good. Use your knee to kill their bottom arm as you step over the head. This prevents them from grabbing your leg and keeps them from countering. Its similar to the knee pin movement you do when spinning to a baseball bat choke from the knee on belly position, if that rings any bells for you.

      Glad it worked for you! Yeah it is surprisingly effective. We use this technique as a warmup with one guy framing on his back and the other looking to circle and use N/S position to get chest to chest or force his opponent to turtle.

    I have trouble getting the leg over the shoulder a lot of people put their arm up to block it. Any tips for that? Or just take the back?

      You mean sliding the bottom leg through/around and trapping their bottom shoulder/arm? Yes, switching it to a back take is always a good option, but if you really want to look for that no gi bow and arrow position, you can get them to bring that bottom arm back in by threatening the armbar or ezekiel choke with the gift wrap. They will usually bring that other hand back in to help defend both of those, and then you can bring your bottom leg through and trap the bottom shoulder. Give it a shot.

      This is a common problem at some BJJ schools unfortunately. It's just a shotgun approach. Teaching one random technique after another without any structure. I try to structure my lessons into "blocks" or "evolutions", taught over Mutiple weeks, so students get plenty of time to absorb what's being taught.

      I've found it very difficult to finish the canto choke from that position without switching your hands, but I wouldn't say it is impossible. Try both and see which works best for you, but switching the hands-off definitely works best for me. It allows me to get a better angle with my hips and apply more force with my hamstring.

      Not double legs. But you can hit single legs. The mechanics don’t have to be all that different. Bend over and wrap your arm deep in the single leg and use your other hand to block their other leg/hip and then it’s traditional single leg finish, cut the angle and go.

      A full double leg with a penetration step isn't the best idea of you have bad knees. you can look up videos on how to do power doubles from the standing position. Might work better for you with your knee issues.

      Yeah, it is really all about dropping your hips, shelving the leg and trapping that knee. Obviously, it won't be as pretty as when you drill it, but if you can keep their leg across your body and their knee trapped on your hip, you should be able to complete the pass.

    Why drop knee on floor?

      It makes sure that you are dropping your entire body weight down and breaking their posture, and also gets you lower to the ground to have the best chance of reaching their heel. There are some versions of the ankle pick where you drop your back knee but keep your front knee up. If that works well for you that's fine. So long as you are dropping all your weight. However, sometimes keeping that front knee up will make it harder reach their ankle and also keep you from dropping all your weight down.

      Your right hand is neutral. No fist. Your pulling your right elbow down into the gap there so your right hand shouldn't be hitting the mat or your own body.

    Nice to see this, as a white belt I've been refining my attack from the hip bump sweep, aka hip bump into kimura, if that fails, arm bar or omaplata. If initial hip bump is crushed forward like in this vid, I tend to go for the high elbow gilly, and if that fails, then ejector seat with the 100% (or 200% if I use the cross arm grip to further pin that shoulder and arm from escaping). Is it possible to show in further vids any chain attack sequences from the hip bump please? Many thanks!

    Sometimes (all the time) I struggle getting under the chin. Any tips?

      If the opponent is chin down in the direction of where the hand is placed, I tend to use my wrist on the opposite side of the chin, cut through from there to the grip (there's a Henry akins vid somewhere on it) but to buy myself time, I also tend to telephone the farside arm to keep that pinned as I work for the paper cutter. Mind you this is against other white belts such as myself so far so can't vouch if this works on higher belts

      yes. this is the basic move. but the basic move rarely works past white or blue belt without a good set up. I usually set this choke up from a knee on belly. when they turn away from me to get away from my near side attacks I set my thumb in choking grip on their lapel, then I reach under their near arm with my free hand and catch the back of their collar and suck them back to make them flat. then I finish the choke form there. Ill try to do a vid on it.

    Personally, I find it not that simple or easy to break past the frame by pushing on the elbow, some people are very strong here, thanks for sharing 😊
