Alcohol Ink Holiday Ornaments: from start to varnish
Making beautiful hand painted alcohol ink ornaments to gift, sell or hang on your own tree is easy. This video covers everything you need to know to make the process flow well and help direct you through some choices and how to varnish your ornament for preservation. Lots of different types of ornaments will work with the Alcohol inks. You can choose from glass, aluminum, plastic, or ceramic. When it comes to ornament color white, silver or clear will work best to make the colors pop. To add white inside the clear ornaments for a stronger contrast, use your white alcohol ink. Using acrylic takes far too long to dry and forever to coat the inside. Apply colors in the way you like best. The colors I use are Piñata Colors from Jacquard Products, these have beautiful rich jewel tones and the best metallic inks. Use gravity and drip color down the ornaments, be minimal and wisp colors around the side while rotating the bobble and blowing air on the inks, or give it an overall pattern using a dabbing technique or with plastic wrap. To seal the inks to prevent chips and scratches brush on Jacquard’s Alcohol Ink Varnish. This is way better to seal the ornaments with as opposed to a spray, it is more protective and can be done indoors. Enjoy making these colorful decorations!

I see many other commenters also wondered about sealing wood coloured with alcohol ink. I plan to use only brown, black, white, and maybe red. A woodworker mentioned combining with shellac/shellac flakes for better longevity. Do you feel a top coat is necessary and, if so, have you tried mixing inks with shellac? Thanks for this great info!
What is the brand of “Basic Dye” you told in the end of video?? I have big projects like furniture sizes.
Jacquard Prdoducts is the brand. Here is the website if you want more details on the basic dyes www.jacquardproducts.com/

For candles, can alcohol ink be used on both paraffin and soy wax candles?
I have personally only used it on paraffin but the inks should work on soy just as well.
Can I use ethanol instead of isopropanol
Yes, either one can be used.
@artminwithlynn thank you
You have made a really wonderful video tutorial about alcohol inks. Information with a personality is so nice!
Thank you so much for the kind words :)
so cool! what about putting it on lightbulbs?? or would the varnish be problematic.... inked lightbulbs could look cool hanging around a room. like little glowing planets. (?). :)
The inks are not lightfast so putting them in an intense light situation like that would make them fade fast. I also would have reservations about the varnish directly on a bulb. I have however, made light shade situations before. They turn out pretty cool, but one has to be ok with the colors fading quicker than most. Good Ideas here tho! Alcohol ink illuminated planets sound like a very cool plan. Making an inked orb and having a small light hanging inside would totally work.
And now I can create a custom ornament the whole family will treasure for years to come.
looks shit
I've been watching your nails flip flopping colors. Then @5:02 you totally blew my mind (what's left of it) when you cleverly matched your nails to your art! Holy Crap, you're good! Luv ya, Monica
This vid sparked some experiments that took longer than expected to flush out, hence the manicure mania. I’ve instructed folks how to use these mediums or over a decade and I still learn new applications every time I get in the studio and use em. Thanks for watching!
Excellent vid! This is just what I need for my miniatures.
Can you wipe it with straight alcohol to remove the color if its not sealed
It will lighten it, but just a little bit. The wood is so porous it holds the color in very effectively. You can get more after application adjustments if the wood is finely sanded to a more smooth surface.
Hello, how marquetry venners get colors?
I’ve been thinking about working with alcohol inks. You have explained it so well. Thank you for this video!
Can you explain the Saran Wrap trick?
Put just a drop or two down and lay the plastic wrap over it while it’s still wet. You can then scrunch the wrap around to move the color and create wrinkles. Leave it to set for a long time, no air means long set time. Time varies depending on amount of ink used but at least 30-45min. You can peel up an edge and if the color stays in its place pull off the wrap and let dry open for a few min.
No heat gun either with alcohol ink works too? Can I spray alcohol for bubbles? Can I use low heat gun? Love your work!
Thanks! A butane torch like what you get for cooking will work. I don't think a low heat gun will be effective in this case. You just have to be careful because if you have a large amount of Ink just sitting on top of the resin, it can catch fire. I advise to wait a bit, like 5min or so, and let inks settle into the resin, if you want to torch for bubbles. I do not think spraying alcohol will help.
HI, so when you resined over the dull bracelet (red) would it matter if it's a week or month later to get glossy finish as you brushed slightly that bracelet? I have things that need touching up I did last month )I'm new). TY
It does not matter how long it has been. The clear wonderful shine will come right back with a fresh coat. Just be sure it is free of dust and such if it has been sitting around a while:)
On wax? well how about that, my daughter makes candles and is looking for ideas. Thanks!!
You are most welcome!
Brilliant, you've given me gr8 ideas
So glad!
Thanks for the awesome demonstration. Great video!
My favorite thing to use it on is tile. I’ve done so many and have made some beautiful things with them. When dry, I resin them so that they don’t smear or fade. When using the tiles for coasters, make sure your resin is heat proof. I even blew some ink onto a large tile to look like a forest floor and then oil painted a tortoise coming out of the vegetation. There is absolutely nothing you can’t do with these wonderful inks.
Right?! They are one of the most versatile mediums I have ever used. I totally love the look of resin coated tiles, they look like candy when done. Great tip about the heat with resin! I use Art Resin and it is not good with heat at all but great for sealing artworks. I love that you are working in layers and adding other paint mediums. Very nice!
@@artminwithlynn thank you so much. It is an ongoing project isn’t it, always evolving. I love it all!!
Sne kalyegh 🤲 very informative 🌱🎨
So nice of you
Thanks so much for this great video!
What is "yupo?" (0:45)
0:56 ok it's polypropylene plastic... lesson learned: wait to comment.
Legion Paper makes it in a pad. I like the orange label medium weight for this application.
@@artminwithlynn Great stuff, I love the results.. thanks for clarifying about the stencil material
So what kind of board is this exactly and can you tell me where you can purchase this? I want to play with these techniques now 😬😍
I use Ampersand boards. They are archival and have a variety of surfaces to choose from. For this application their gesso or clay board will be perfect. Claybord works really well with alcohol ink! They are sold in art shops or can be ordered. I get mine from Preston Arts Center in Louisville KY. If ya just want to play with the technique to start any rigid board would work just fine.
Nice video… really appreciate the well done presentation of compare and contrast. You did not mention adding color to the paste before application… can that be done? Or do you work your process for it to dry then apply color after?
Thanks! You should not add color to the paste. The added polymers of the color will keep the paste from cracking on this one.
You are delightful! This video was sooooo informative! Thank you thank you❤
You are so welcome!
Can you do this on a canvas for the background and then paint over it (mixed media)
Yes, but you must prime the canvas with Kilz or something slick first.
Thank you for this helpful video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video! I am a newbie. Can the alcohol ink be dropped into a container of water to create a design and then dip a nonporous object, such as a styrene plastic model car to transfer the design to the model car body?
Nope. The alcohol does not work well/at all with water. I do this process with other materials quite a bit, for demo and workshops. Testers enamels or Marabu Easy Marble Paints will float on water and give you the effect you are looking for. Marbling kits designed for paper or fabric give more detailed prints or dips but do not work as well on slick surfaces, it is possible with the right surface prep tho. If you have never tried the process all around, I would suggest you give the Marabu a try first for this.
Fabulous video! Thank you SO much! ❤️♥️❤️good information and techniques❣️🙏❣️
You are so welcome!
unicorn spit does the same thing :)
Hi..... can they be used on a very well prime canvas???
They need a slick surface to work and move as seen. You can use them on canvas but will need to add a slick primer not just regular gesso. Most people use KILZ primer for this. It can be found at hardware stores.
Yes you can! Most stretched canvases are pre-primed and it makes it nonporous enough for alcohol ink to work well on it! When I first started using alcohol inks, this was the main question I had and I couldn’t find a straight answer until I watched a video where someone used a brand new canvas and made an awesome alcohol ink painting and that gave me the courage to try on one of those thin art board canvases and I found it to work wonderfully and now I use all kinds of canvases. It’s obviously a little different than using inks on a yupo kind of paper but the ink still flows and glides just fine. But obviously you can add primer and any other materials you want to make it slicker but I have found that it’s not a requirement for it work well. 😊
I thought we shouldn't use a torch on alcohol inks. Is it flammable?
Torching the resin that is coating and on top of the inks is just fine and really helps to get all bubbles out.
I'm having some fun with alcohol inks! Do you put any kind of clear coat on top of your wood design?
I have not sealed any of the wood grain works I have done. I have sealed an inked gourd with cold wax. Sealers will work just fine, just make sure to test first. The wood really soaks in the ink so if the sealer does have a solvent and the ink re activates, I doubt it will go far or even be very detectable. I use art resin to seal other ink works and would expect it to work well on wood as long as it is sanded smooth (before ink).
@@artminwithlynn I tried resin and my uv light and it worked great.
So I didn't know how to use this and I globbed it on THICK in the shape of a frog. Kind of curious how that's going to turn out...
You will certainly get a textured form but the reflective properties show when it is in an even layer. Always fun to play and try new things!
Very educational I have learned so much omg thanks
Yay:) so happy you enjoyed it!
Love ur personality 😅😂🎉
❤😂thank u! I loved this
I finish my pieces off with uv resin after i do a rough sand. Saves so much time and work sanding. Thank you for the tips
Great tip!
Exceptionally great video. Can't wait to try new techniques!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I also “celebrate “ when something I make comes out right 🎉!!!! Cheering, dancing, yay!!!
