    I’m thinking that adding a soup can chimney as mentioned would keep chaff under control. Of course it would very hot , but how about adding wooden drawer handles to each side by screwing them through the wall of the can. There also can openers that remove the lid while keeping the top and bottom bead, this would aid thee can’s stability.

    • @scottb4843
      @scottb4843 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely add whatever to the can that makes it work for you, they will get very hot. The chaff will still blow out of the top of the can but the can will keep the beans that bounce up in the roaster. Have fun with it. Roast On!

    Thank you for telling us what first crack and second crack sound like and how long to wait before a second crack sound, I am totally blind. I would like to roast my own coffee at home, is there a coffee roaster that’s blind friendly? I would like one that has cool touch and has a cool down feature, and doesn’t set off the smoke alarm. Also I’d like to hear first crack, and second crack, and hopefully one that has a accessibility voice feature, that way I know what I’am doing.if there isn’t such a thing then there should be and they need to invent that.

      No problem. The hot air popper works great for dark roasts. I may prefer light to medium roasts but the point of doing it yourself is that you can have your coffee roasted just the way you want it. The idea of my videos is to help people get started in home coffee roasting, to show how easy it can be. How you develop your roasting talent and taste beyond that is up to you, and that is perfectly ok.

    • @homeroastcoffee6063
      @homeroastcoffee6063 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will make a difference in the roast but it can be done. The second roast will go faster and be brighter. Best to let it cool for at least a few minutes in between roasts while you cool and bag your first batch of coffee beans. These are pretty basic (cheap) appliances and probably won't last long if you do a bunch of consecutive roasts. I often let mine run empty for about a minute before doing my first roast.

    I have noticed that the SR-300 has a two-way switch for Temp and the settings are Heat/cool. Is the SR-300 always in heat mode? The switch does not appear to be able to change to cool.

    • @homeroastcoffee6063
      @homeroastcoffee6063 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Heat switch is only ON or OFF, not hi/low. Unfortunately the SR 300 is no longer available new, I leave this video up to show how easy roasting can be, and for those who inherit one. You may be able to find one used but like any houshold appliance I caution buying a used one. The current entry level unit from FreshRoast is the SR-540 it has better heat control, larger roast chamber, and a temperature read out. If you want absolute ease of use the New NESCO home coffee roaster is the simplest.

    I just ordered 5 pounds of green coffee beans from you. The Ethiopian and the Nicaraguan beans are delicious. I will be ordering more soon. I also am using an old cyclonic air popcorn machine. Unlike you, I am having trouble keeping the beans in the container when they begin to expand and dry. The plastic cover is basically useless, but I think that a small piece of hardware cloth across the top will be more helpful. Any ideas that you think would be better than using hardware cloth?

    • @scottb4843
      @scottb4843 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find that if I put something thin like a ruler under the front of the popper it helps keep the beans in, but it has to be just a slight tip up. Or, You can increase the height of your roast chamber by simply finding a soup can that fits snugly (so it won't move or fall out, you can't touch it) into the top of your popper. Obviously you will remove the top, bottom, and wrapper from the can (soup too, as well as sharp edges), and it can't block the air vents. Use Caution if you try this, the can gets very HOT, use oven mits or hot pads, don't touch the can. The added height of the can helps keep the beans in but still lets the chaffe fly out.

Also wanted to let you know that I rewired the Poppery air popper. Now when you plug in the popper the fan runs continuously. Kim, You don't NEED the fan, you can softly blow across the beans as you shake them to blow away the chaff, or doing it outside a breeze can blow away chaff, or get a small fan on LOW. I no longer use the fan myself, I shake the beans up in the air and catch them in a roasting screen letting the wind blow away chaff. I assume here you are referring to the fan used to cool the beans After taking them out of the roaster. The key is very little wind is needed, a stong fan will blow your fresh roasted beans all over.

      @@scottb4843 Thank you for your very detailed response. I've seen your video's and it seems the air popper is the easiest, but in your opinion, does it provide better results than the whirly popcorn popper, which you sell with your coffee? • @homeroastcoffee6063
      @homeroastcoffee6063 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keverett256 That all depends on your taste and skill. I have seen roasts from a skillet and spoon that equal any done by expensive machines. The more coffee the more smoke, you can do the roasting inside by using the vent fan on your stove while roasting then shake off chaff outside. Many people think cooling the beans faster after the roast is better so being in WI is good. Use something you have already to try the first time or two before sinking $ in it, if it can get hot enough it can work.

      Sting, There are a couple little things you can do to keep beans in, put something thin under the front feet to tip it back a little away from the chute, find a soup can that fits snugly in the top of the popper so it won't go all the way down and cut both top and bottom off can and remove the label. This makes the roast chamber taller so the beans won't get out, just don't touch it as it will get very hot, take it off with an oven mitt when you pour out the beans.

    I have a 1440 watt Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn maker so I think it’ll work.

    Picked a similar machine (presto) at goodwill for $3. Hopefully it will do a better job than my $5 cast iron skillet (also from Goodwill) Also, FUCK American Roast and OUNCES.

    I just bought a 340. It’s great. I started roasting with a popcorn popper. Bought a Behmor 1600 plus. Like the Fresh Roast 340 better. Great vid.

    Any alternative if i got no temperature measurement during the roasting?

      Just listen for the First Crack and if desired Second (dark roast) Crack. Also you should see an increasing amount of smoke usually beginning in First crack and significant by Second crack.

    Nice video but I would like to know the temp readings you were getting? I have a Whirley Pop and want to try on Orville Redenbacher hot air popper. I've been stopping about 415-420 degrees. Tried to get to dark roast about 440-450 degrees but the coffee tasted burnt and gross, looked nice though.

    • @scottb4843

      Remember that coffee creates it's own heat as it roasts AND the accuracy of thermometers can vary so this is an area I think each of us has to figure out with our own equipement. The rate of change in the coffee increases when you reach first crack, this can be controlled somewhat, but be aware that your reading of 417 degrees can taste vastly different than what you get at 421 degrees. Also, your coffee will continue to roast and darken a little after you remove the heat. Coffee roasted to 440 degrees will taste burnt and gross to most of us.

    You shouldnt let the temperature get that high. You will kill the aroma and the coffee will taste like Starbucks or any other American coffee. It is difficult to keep temperature low enough though, because after the first crack the process is endothermic. A second crack is the sign that the aroma molecules have been fully destructed and carbonized. No matter what preference one has regarding the lightness of the roasts, this is simply wrong.

      What should be the right, temp, then? As you said I taste my coffee with less complex aroma (beans and beverage, both) thanks!

      Well he deliberately wanted a shitty American roast, he mentioned that. I think he is wasting money on these green beans, he should stick to Folgers.

      I don't understand how these coffee experts like to roast dark or medium to dark. Medium is okay but light is the way to experience the true aroma.i usually stop 30 seconds into the first crack i hear. What's your stop point with these air poppers?

      @@adam3d851 Perhaps there is a Reason they call it an "American Roast", in blind taste tests the vast Majority of Americans prefer this roast. That doesn't mean it is the best for you, just basically popular. This video is to help Beginners learn how Easy it is to Start roasting your own coffee. There are an infinate number of ways to vary the roast once you have an idea of what you are doing and what you like, even with this machine (it is a VERY popular roasting method). To tell People there is only One way coffee is good would be terribly short sighted.

    I just heard about this machine today. It does not have a temperature setting!?! To understand what is wrong with that, imagine if there was no way of controlling your cooking temperature when you are barbecuing, instead you either torch it with a flamethrower for half a minute, or put it on a heat blanket for 20 hours - your results would be a big fail. Chances are the same type of problem would apply when you roast beans in this machine.

      Unlikely, the meat that you barbecue comes in a variety of sizes and consistencies. Beans, are roughly the same size no matter where they're grown and so you shouldn't ever see much difference in terms of doneness. Also, when it comes to barbecue, if you do it at lower heat, you can always torch it with a flamethrower afterwards.

      Chris L The best to grill is pork, putting many other things on the grill is mainly just to heat it. Correct barbecue procedure is to close the pores of the meat using full power (without flame burning it), then cooking it using medium heat. If you heat it on a low power amateur grill it will be dry.
