Ride Log (Long Play) - Southern Okanagan 2022
Footage dump of a ride I did in June of 2022. We were just out exploring some of the more remote local trails as well as looking for some new stuff that had been added. It was a great day out on the bikes!

The previous weekend I went out to test my Cyclops lighting, a 10.0 LED and an Explorer 2 LED bar. It worked so well that I came back for a longer, but more relaxed ride with my friends Al and Kristin. It was a perfect night for a rip in the woods. Night riding is a lot of fun, especially on single track. It gets you super focused on the trail and adds an extra element of adventure to the whole...

Some fun single track ripping with my buddies last summer. I'm using lights from Cyclops Adventure Sports. The main headlight is their 10.0 LED bulb with both Hi and Lo beam running. Up top is their Explorer 2 LED bar. This combination works really well and is very compact on the bike. I've been using both of these lights for about 3 years now and they have held up very well. Creaky Bones Fun-Ride 2022 SODBC

My first time doing the Creaky Bones Fun-Ride put on by the Southern Okanagan Dirt Bike Club. The ride was in Naramata, BC this year, as the usual location in Okanagan Falls was badly burnt by fires in 2021. I rode the B loop with my buddy Al, the trails were very wet with plenty of slick roots and rocks to catch you out. It was a lot of fun and look forward to doing it again next year.

I haven't been on my bike all winter so now that the weather is getting good I decided to check out my local riding area to see what the snow situation was looking like. Bear Creek in Kelowna, BC. Despite having my Grip Studs installed the snow got too deep, too fast. I didn't feel like blowing my engine up trenching through the deep stuff, so I called it a day. Still had fun tho.

    Hey Jono, im having trouble with tuning my 17 300exc with a lectron carby, im running a very similar setup to you and I was wondering what metering rod youre running and the rough measurements that you have it set to. Im having trouble with it gurgling in the 5th and 6th gears at about 120kph. I really hope you can help me out. Thanks

      Thanks! I honestly can't remember what It cost. It was worth it tho! I'm also not sure how fast we were going.. It always feels faster in a Kart because you are so low to the ground. I'd guess it was at least 60-70kph.. so 35-45mph.

    What is this exact setup and what year bike? I have a carb’d 300 2015 and can only run like 30-40w total

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a 2017 300 XC-W. To support everything, I installed the Trail Tech 100w stator with their regulator/rectifier and wiring kit to convert the bike to be fully DC. I also have an 8-cell Antigravity lithium battery under the seat which allows me to keep the lights and phone charger on when stopped. When stock these bikes will only have a small DC output purely for charging the battery (the 30-40w you mentioned), however it will also put out AC for lighting. You can then run an inline regulator/rectifier to run these LED lights off AC, but they will flicker at lower RPM and not stay lit when you kill the engine. Cyclops sell the inline reg/rec's if you need them. Honestly tho, doing the Trail Tech upgrade is the best way to do it. It's not very hard to install yourself either.

    Great info, I just bought a low compression head, what were your jetting settings for the mikuni carb? Recommend JD settings?

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't remember exactly what the settings were now, but I just used the guide for my elevation and temperature. I may have favoured a slightly richer setting for the mid and upper ranges due to the head.. I'm guessing I did that. Probably moved the clip and maybe went a size up with the main jet for my elevation etc.

    Hi Jonathan. Nice overview of the TSP head for carb bikes. I have an 18 300 that is running very well with JD jetting, jet block gasket fix, and float height adjusted. Do you think the low compression head would be better for technical single track ? I ride mostly at McNutt in Maple Ridge. Cheers

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah with the stock carb running well I'd probably go for the low compression head for McNutt type riding. My bike felt like a bit of an animal with the stock carb plus JD Kit and the medium head. The Lectron really smooths it out for me so I'm happy with my setup. I know my bike would be good for McNutt.. its just the rider that would be the weak link! 😂

    I was there yesterday! Was this from a few years ago? They have the track running the opposite way now. What was your best time?

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it was July this year. It seems they change the track layout often. They will also run the karts in the opposite direction as well. I can't remember where our lap times were at, but when I saw the track records they were like 10 seconds faster.. I'd expect maybe 3 or 4 seconds at the most.. not 10 lol. Now I know why.

    • @mdankewich
      @mdankewich 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonathanVee hmm, I’ve been several times over the past 3 years and it’s been in the other direction. I did t know they changed it up that often. My best yesterday was a 1:15.55, which is my personal best. It seems impossible to take a full 10 seconds from that but apparently some people can do it.

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mdankewich Oh really? I have seen a few videos that were shot this year and seen different track setups being used. It made me assume they change it often. IMO the track is too short for someone in a rental kart to be 10 seconds ahead. It has to be a 2stroke racing kart or a different track configuration. The chicanes they used at the end of the straight for us definitely didn't help out our times. I saw one guys video where they weren't being used at all. Haha. Makes me question those lap records. Even being a second behind a record lap is a big gap and hard to close. Kart racing usually comes down to tenths or hundredths of a second. The closer you get to the limit, the harder it is to close the gap.

It's a really nice little bag actually. Handmade. The switch near my left grip is for my LED bar. If you're referring to the black thing on the bars in the centre it's a phone/gps mount. • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! As I mentioned at the end of the video I'm running an Lectron carb.. H-Series to be specific. After installing the head I had to make some adjustments to it by putting in a different metering rod. I really don't enjoy jetting, thats why I have the Lectron. It doesn't require the same effort to set-up as a stock carb with jets and needle changes etc. If you don't want to spend the money on a Lectron or a SmartCarb, I'd suggest getting a JD-Jetting kit for your bike and following the instructions that come with that kit. It will get your jetting really close, most of the time. Relatively cheap as well.

      It was good, I really liked it. Although I did notice on bigger climbs it could have used some a bit more torque. If I was building a snow bike I'd probably go with a 450, but the 350 was still a lot of fun.

    • @musschootski
      @musschootski 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonathanVee Do you think the torque deficit is partially offset by revs? And did you have any trouble starting it in the cold? Mine seems to be a real pain to start below freezing, and I’m wondering about having a booster pack (probably good idea anyway) and source of pre-heating.

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@musschootski Yes it is, but to a certain point. I guess it depends on your terrain as well. In the deeper powder on longer climbs I found the engine would run out of steam a bit and I'd loose track speed and start digging. If you hesitate and cut power for a second you're having to drop a gear and loose vital momentum. Some of that can be attributed to my lack of snow biking experience I'm sure. When the 350 was in the power it was a lot of fun. I just remembered thinking a few times I'd prefer having a 450 to cover my ass. I think a 350 is still extremely capable tho.

      @@JonathanVee That’s what I figured, but needed to hear it from somebody who knows.

    • @JonathanVee
      @JonathanVee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@musschootski The bike I was using had an issue with the starter button itself. I can't remember if that's in this video or not. Apart from that it seemed to start pretty easily. If your bike is having cold start issues then sometimes tapping the start button for a second to prime the fuel pump, then cranking the engine helps them start. I used to have a 350 for trail riding. If I just cranked the button when the engine was cold it didn't like I start easily. So I'd tap the button, let the fuel pump prime then wait a few seconds and hit the starter. It would fire right up. I'd definitely have a booster pack on a snow bike tho. 100%. If you're riding in really cold temps, get an engine blanket too. The powder blasting the engine sucks heat like crazy. Then the bike starts adding fuel as the engine is below operational temps. Not great for the engine. Plus it isn't making all of its power at that point either. Having a temp gauge on the bars is a great idea to see what's going on IMO.

    This place looks sick man, jealous of the ridding septs you have. The down hill at 4.05 looked sketchy, and imagine Gopro made it look easier than it actually was.

      @@queenbee5594 no shes just asking why the mutt? Let's allow shit eating dogs into a natural hot spring. Think that would float anywhere else... you and the mutt would be floating down halfway river if I seen that disrespect. Disgusting!

      We call them textiles. They have taken over the east side hot springs too. I need to get back to Germany where prople still enjoy and respect the freedom of nature.
