Sorry about the bad audio levels, I will do a better job next time. Thanks again Chuckles for coming on the pod!
Good gear video
I have done several thru hikes and food is the one thing I always spent way more money than planned but for me I needed it.I carried a lot of lunch meat, pepperoni, salami lasts in a pack,If you want to save money stay out of towns and don't use shuttles walk or hitch a ride and the AT is doable in four months .The PCT is more money expect two hundred dollar motel rooms and food twice as much and you will need more gear and it wears out faster but the PCT is by far the best of the trails.
I think I will be much more conscious of my spending this time, and yeah I'm sure gear will definitely get worn out faster, all that sand and grit, getting inside zippers.
@@BullfrogHikes A lot of PCT hikers mess up their start dates with the screwy permit system we now have you want to start about the end of April if your start to early you have bad weather in s cal and you don't want to get to Kennedy meadows before june because of snow. You don't need a permit for the first 700 miles so if you get a late start date hike down and pick up your permit.A lot of hikes get ruined by starting to early or to late and both times I have been in Washington in Sept we had snow storms so it's not like the AT you have a narrow time window
Wow ! That is a lot of money!
🤑
I just can’t imagine your food costs 😮 What kind of restaurants are you eating at? Not a Subway or McDonald’s.
@tippin.turtle All of them, i ate a burger in almost every town. not all of these were high end places, it's morso the quantity of food that I would consume, + carry out to go.
Thanks for sharing the budget details for your 2024 AT thru-hike. I appreciate your candor and how realistic you are. It was interesting to hear about Resupply Frequency and how longer carries may help reduce cost. And sometimes you just need some "comfort food" - on trail or at home. 😉
sounds about right, I platinum blazed on my AT adventure with no regrets.
@j3hikes444 Platinum blazing is underrated. if I could, I would 🤠
So you're not going to discuss the majority of the cost of your trip. This video is literally just hey I went to McDonalds, I can't tell you how much I paid for the food but they sell the drinks at .07c per liter. Why even make it?
Did you watch the video? He literally told us how much he spent in each category. Were you looking for a daily breakdown?
@ts7901 The problem is I didn't keep many reciepts, so breaking down calories per dollar would be tough, but if y'all are interested, I can make a part 2 that dives deeper into the excel spreadsheet.

Great gear choices. Excellent video. New follower here. Crow✌️
10/10 video
@@MelodyWright-p9n You're the G.O.A.T 😜
This is interesting, but wow, that's some expensive food. I'm I the EU though, maybe it's pricier there!
@Podgeabrillion Unfortunately, many shops near the trail take advantage of hikers with high prices. Some towns have large grocery stores where you can find better deals, but it might be inconvenient.
Well thought-out kit. I have been using the Aeon Li for 4+ years. Has worked great, I did have to make one repair at the peak - dyneema started to separate in one spot. I like the small footprint - a benefit when sites are hard to come by. You will want more water capacity for the PCT - at least 3L will be needed in a few sections. I have had good luck with the BeFree. I don't baby it, but I do try to clean it as often as possible.
@panhandlejake6200 Indeed, I had to learn the hard way, I always swush the befree after each use, it goes a long way towards keeping the flow strong. My plan is two 1.5 liter bottles, the befree, and my 2 liter bladder just in case
Would definitely like to hear about the financial part
@@scenicroute8643 coming soon
Thanks for the video. This is great. Can you tell me exactly which power bank you have? I think you said it was 30,000 mah.
It's the Alfox 30,000 MA/h power bank. I made a video about it: th-cam.com/video/-KHVjLGBh7o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SWyZ9LlM5AO0FNjY
Thanks for sharing man!
I'm doing the PCT in 2025, also! Hope to see you on trail!
@@karakendall685 see you out there!
Is this correct? Your clothing was made up of shorts, sun hoody, 2 pair socks, wind pants, puffy or fleece, rain jacket and shoes. Is that everything?
@skyl4rk I also had an extra pair of underwear, and my boonie hat 👒.
@BullfrogHikes ok, thanks for making this video, I watched a few times and checked out your lighterpack.
@skyl4rk keep in my these are the items I ended with. When I started from springer on April 1st I also had a rain kilt, Senchi fleece, hiking pants, Balaclava, third pair of socks, and liner gloves.
Thanks mate, did you add those floor straps yourself or does the tent come with them already installed?
I added them myself. You can buy them on zpacks Sleeping Pad Slide Stopper Set it's like 15 bucks
Make sure you clean the surface well before installing and watch the tutorial carefully, you don't want to get the adhesive dirty like I did.
All the way to Maine this time buddy! Hope to see you at trail days
Luv u fun facts, I will definetly be at trail days 🤞
Good luck on your hike. I did 1000 miles of the PCT. Dumped the gossamer pad first.
I had the rolling version last year. Ended up ditching it at uncle johnys hostile. I'm hoping the folding version will be easier to stash, but I doubt it. Also the durability is bad, mine shredded way too quick.
Friday, February 23rd: Thank-you for the information. Happy Trails! Ross08

Sunday, February 18th: Good luck! Here's wishing you success! Happy Trails! Ross08
Get it 🤙 happy trails
Monday, February 05th: Most power banks are Anker or Nitecore; trail proven, especially when cold. Test yours at home outside at night and see if it still functions. Happy Trails! Ross08
I have 400 miles on this power bank and can say that it is very reliable in wet conditions, and hold it's charge well
Maybe I missed it but have you announced your departure date?
Not yet, I plan on making an announcement video soon, so stay tuned
@BullfrogHikes subed. Happy trails and thanks for sharing!
Walnuts have a lot of calories and fat. A trail mix with walnuts and dried fruit can keep you going a long time.
Thanks for the info, I'm definitely taking down notes 📝
Monday, January 29th: Trail food is determined mostly by availability and 'hiker hunger'; many items consumed on Trail are not eaten at home. Happy Trails!
´It´s just a walk in the woods´ That is very funny!
Enjoy!
👍 enjoy it It’s the best decision you can make
Hi Baskets!
Great set up -jealous of your base weight but I find it hard in the colder weather starting out....hope to get it down some as I head down the trail. Hope to see you out there!
Yup, cold weather calls for more layers / changes of clothing. For me, i'd rather have a lower base weight so I can carry more food weight. I know as long as I have extra calories I can warm up, even if everything is completely soaked through.
Good luck when is your start date?
Around April 1st
Did that 45 years ago Tx to Pa. Oct Rain. Cold.
and that's the last we heard of him.
Pro tip: Turmeric can help reduce inflammation. One study found that taking turmeric extract three times daily was comparable to taking a 1,200-milligram dose of ibuprofen daily. It also has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties, so def worth using on trail. Some people get stomach upsets from high amounts of turmeric though so test ahead of time. Drinking lots of water and taking a cold water dip also helps reduce inflammation and muscle recovery.
Very interesting I will look into it. Yo to be honest I try to avoid Ibuprofen as much as possible, it's bad for the stomach and can have other side effects. I primarily carry it in case of an emergency.
Cool just subbed
Apalačko gorje
I'm also planning to hike the triple crown, any advice would be appreciated
That's awesome 👍 I would recommend listening to hikers who've completed the triple crown. Rascal is a great one: th-cam.com/video/fQGEfYRsyvk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8H7rycii8qL8-0Du My advice from my limited experience would be, start training, walk every day with a pack. Dial in your gear. And embrace the suck.
Well I met many hikers with your setup and you will fly for sure. Just be careful when severe weather hits. I knew a hiker like you that hiked 35 miles in the Smokies by accident. There wasn't enough room for him so he just kept hiking till he found one much later in. So if you start early you will not have this problem but if you hike in a crowd it could prove challenging. Just be prepared.
Why the FBombs? It does not help anything.
No hood, maybe light weight balaclava for sleep, neck, ears head, good list video
Just an unusual video. Pay no attention to the comments, hike your hike. I subscribed, good luck.
Oh, lol. Thanks for the sub.
Not sure the AT would be for you guys. But i would follow you could be interesting.
Why do you say that?
It seems most if not all post hike reviews I've seen who set out with one of these "b-free" filters ends up switching out to a Sawyer.....
This is a new item in my kit. I'm trying it out because I've heard of the amazing flow rate on this thing. And time is everything. My old filter was the versaflow. Which is similar to the Sawyer in flow rate. We shall see, if I don't like it I'll just send myself the old one.
Never been backpacking, planning on going this year. Thanks for the vid and ideas!
Heck yeah! Happy trails!
Hey Thanks aground cloth that folding pad and the air mattress has always worked for me. And it's worth the carrying
Good luck and have a blast!
