This is one of our old cues back in the workshop for an 'Off Season' full refurbishment. The cue was fully stripped prior to commencing any work. The shaft had a full coat of grain filler before being sanded back with various grades of paper and then 2 coats of oil; the first burnished in and then cut back before adding a second prior to polishing. The brass ferrule was replaced with a grade 5 ...

Nice work it looks brand new👌 my 3/4 cue has recently developed a tingy noise when tapped and on some shots, the noise seems to be coming from the joint and im not sure if theres a hairline crack developing in the wood by the joint. I was wondering if this is common and can it be repaired 🤞
how about burnishing the the side of the tips?
I've just sanded my cue top half looking at staining it darker, once ive applied the stain what would be the best thing to seal the cue with please its only a 70 quid cue as I'm just getting into it but the varnish on the original was very sticky please help
У Вас там все такие тупые что надо видео снимать как простейший замок поменять ? 😂😂😂
Which oil wax mix is the best
What brand is it in the video? Thank you
Great video. Do you have suggestions to source the type of leather you use for burnishing?
Very interesting 👍🏻 . I took the game up in my early teens and had no probs with eyesight until mid thirties. Optician in my town near Belfast made me a pair which were a disaster (his claim to fame was making a pair for the hurricane.) The distortion was crazy, like trying to pot rugby balls😄 Gave them up and continued with my blurred smokey vision. Did pretty well at league standard, lots of trophies and the occasional century but it became a hell of a struggle as i reached early forties. Gave up competitive play around then and now at 55 havnt played at all for a few years. If i ever play again i think I'll be needing those mini binoculars audiences used in theatres in the good old days😁
Give Chris at snookerspex.com a call. I'd tried other snooker glasses without success and was about to pack in. His glasses enabled me to carry on playing.
Marc - do you know where you can buy a spoony or similar please so I can give one a go?
@michaelheap5543 I have one you can try mate
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 thank you that would be great!
How about elkmaster? I just did my very first elk tip and it's frayed badly when sanding it to shape. Any tips please to save the tip? Or get rid of the fluff?
Hiya If you have frayed edges or tiny pieces of leather sticking out then you can take them off with a finer grade of sandpaper, eg 800 or 1200.
Got mine this week, absolutely brilliant!! So happy i can actually see the balls clearly and when down on the shot.
I love mine. Chris is very easy to deal with.
hi where can i get lock catch from as i brought 1 key doesnt fit in but works perfect on other
I would try the suppliers first for information and then the manufacturers.
Is it the same if I use lynchs balm wax for smoothness
I can't really answer that one fully Jason as I don't know the exact ingredients. As it's a balm designed to make the surface smooth I wouldn't think it's a direct replacement for finishing cues or it would advertise such. You could contact Jim who makes it but I've never gotten the impression it's ever been used as a finishing product.
It’s natural ingredients bees wax you rub and buff the cue for a smooth finish as my cue can get quite sticky at times the is people online using this product aswell
Yeah I'm very familiar with the balm and sell it, I also know Jim. It's always a tough one when when comparing products as it depends on type of wax and quantity in mixes. Beeswax can be sticky if the content is too high or you have sweaty hands. Naturally beeswax can melt a little just from body heat from your hands or a high room temperature so I know he has a big more in it. It will feel different to linseed oil but again, it depends on your playing conditions and personal hand temperature. You'd think this would be simple to answer but I've spent a few years making various finishing oils or oil wax mixes. @JasonClarke-l4d
Mark, is that glue the 15g bottle?
Yes mate.
Only use new bottles of this, the adhesive can separate from the gel on older bottles.😮
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 Thanks mate, not a glue i see for sale here a lot but i can order a few from ebay. I'm used to Bison and loctite but as i had tips come off lately i want to try that gorilla.
I mean trim
Hi Mark. What is your opinion of the cue make Cue Craft in nottingham? Do you have much experience with these and have you found them to be of good, poor or mixed quality?
Generally pretty good shafts. Not a fan of the joint though.
@thesnookercrazygroup3562 I have 2 both one piece so my preference has saved me some hurt there I guess
@@cfcsk2996 Good choice.😃
I bought a hand made cue I can feel my stubble catch when I move cue on my chin ,wat should I do
Hi Generally I'd advice a grain fill to start withand if it still catches then it could be a bit more drastic after this but really for a professional to do.
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 I think your right the grain isn’t smooth alright
So ive got round this now by putting a little celotape strip just across the bottom of both lenses, so it fills that gap and props your glasses up, works perfect no more messing about, just trim the celotape and double it over in the middle 👍
I've heard of a few players doing that. As long as you have larger glasses so a larger focus area in the lens without curvature then should be good.
hi pal good job on everything you doing what's the best cantract or address if i needed to give my cue over to you.thanks
Hi Please contact first before sending as we try not to store cues awaiting work. We also only take cues from the UK as overseas courier damage and documentation has just become too much of an issue I'm afraid. You can find my details on the link below, many thanks. ❤ great work Sir 👍
Hi, what do you recommend for a maple cue, regular oiling like an ash cue or just wax?
One more question. Is it boiled linseed oil or raw? I have noticed raw takes an eternity to dry on a cue😬
@jason147h6 Depends which raw you use and whether the flaxseed was grown at high or low altitude etc. I prefer raw and burnish it into the shaft and it's fine.
Great. Thanks Marc. Top man👍
What is your process of burnishing the cue Marc?
@jason147h6 Hi Jason. I basically spin it at speed creating heat under my hand until hot and move my way up and down the cue. Generally I'll cut it bak afterwards with 0000 steel wool and burnish it again until happy it's super smooth and cooked in.
Brill. Thanks Marc. Great video content by the way👍
@jason147h6 No problem mate.
When would you choose wax vs oil and vice versa? Is there much difference between the two? Some cue makers sell wax and some sell oil and it’s always confused me which would be best for finishing your cue
@@georgepaton1881 Generally do oil or a wax/oil mix. Oil/wax mix is generally if it is going over certain types of non wood foundations.
Can one use powered contact lenses instead of Specs?
Oh.. already answered in the video. Thanks
Thank you for this video. I followed exactly and I’ve impressed myself how perfect it is. The scalpel with rotating cue is so much better than chopping down on the tip.
No problem. Glad it helped you.
I have to say based on the cut you just did that device would be a no no for me, it ripped the wood as opposed to cutting. Could you post another example? Another issue I see that could be improved and that is the spring locking mechanism does not allow you to adjust the amount of pressure on the blade nor does it have a stop allowing you to set to amount of wood you what to remove. I could see a lot of pp, ruining their cues with this device. Has potential just needs some up grades which I think I could do my self. Adjustable tensioner and a stop
Hi Peter I don't disagree which is why I don't use this device, kine are completed on a lathe. The video is for helping people who have the cutter but uncertain how it works. I also think on many occasions parts of the tenon could be ripped from the cue if the blade isn't perfect.
May I ask about cue maintenance …do you suggest oil only or oil and than wax?
Hi Depends on how the cue was finished. Some shaft sanding sealer are better with a wax oil mix where oil us probably better when no sealer is applied. As regards butt's it depends what the wood is.
Hi, on the CC website installation guide, it states not to sandpaper the top of the tip, only to use a file? (and they promote their CC cue tip file) i don't see any problems but just something i thought i should ask, also, CC recommend using burnishing wax (also a CC burnishing wax) on sides of tip, is this necessary as you didn't include in video? thanks so much, have got g3's coming in mail, many thanks
Hiya Obviously we all have our preferred method to fit a tip. The method I show is a more basic method to help people get going without it being too complicated. Personally I generally fit tips holding a long sharp bare blade which I've been doing for years, most people would shred their hands which is why I don't promote it. I burnish the old way which is the shiny side of bare leather and the roll the cue up and down my thigh whist sitting, many long term tip fitters do the same. You can use wax but no real need as the side walls will go hard without it. Obviously Century supply a file which is one grade of coarseness but different players require different effects on the top surface of the tip hence using the appropriate paper. Some advise not to use paper as it may leave some of the sand in the tip surface, if you're not confident, just check the surface.😀
Very nice 👌🏻🍀
Buy a cue lathe. saves you a lot of time and you can do a ferrule change and tapering with it as well as what you do in here.
Hiya The videos are predominantly made for people that don't have the tools I have so they can still have a go. I have a cue lathe but if it's a lacquer that's crystalising or brittle it comes off pretty quickly with a scraper without all the dust.
Nooooooooo really, you don’t need to mess about with tape, crazy
I've allays used low tack decorators tape as it doesn't pull anything off the shaft, doesn't leave any residue on the shaft but sticks to itself whilst protecting the shaft so where's the downside.
I de lacquered a power glide connoisseur back in the late 80’s. turned out the actual splicing was horrible and it had then been painted or transferred over to make the splicing look uniform before being covered in thick lacquer. Think they later started making them properly but the early ones are rubbish in my opinion
Hi Ian Generally, lacquer can be used to cover problems. Lots of times it's been removed to find wood isn't ebony but painted cheaper woods, poor shafts or repairs. I don't have a real.problem with it as long as it's only used on the cue butt for grip.
People keep suggesting wire wool at 0000? Is that similar to what you are using? Many thanks
Wire wool is a polishing grade and will normally remove any oxidation if the brass and put a shine on the ferrule, it won't remove deeper scratches.
Yes, I use 0000 wire wool
❤ Hi if you can tell me the price
Hi Cue refurbs are all different prices depending in what needs to be completed. You can contact me directly on info@snookercrazy.com if you want to find out more. Many thanks.
Been watching you from the start. Best cue doctor I've ever seen.
Just struck me again seeing every cue behind you is an ash shaft...but I always wonder why hardly anyone uses maple cues? I've heard a few ideas here and there like the grain on ash helps aim and also that ash gives more feel to the shot? I've tried a number of cues of both woods over the years and they're all much of a muchness. I don't find the ash grain helps aim at all, if anything it could be distracting. I also don't find ash gives a better feel on shots, it seems to entirely depend on the particular cue and the particular piece of maple or ash it's been made from. Is it really just about everyone liking the look of ash grain and that's about all there is to it? Or most people just copy the majority of pros thinking therefore ash must be better? Seems to me that every cue is very individual and there are no rules about which wood is better for anything. Curious if anyone has more experience with both and can offer more insight.
What do you use on the ebony parts mate, had a bit of trouble getting a nice finish on mine?
This all depends on which make/type of cue I'm fully refinishing John. It can be just linseed oil, oil wax mixture, mixed waxes, polishes or if requested even a light lacquer but that's rare.
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 it’s just a Chinese one that came covered on varnish so I got it all of had no problems with the shaft just the butt. But I’ll try boiled linseed next I think cheers mate.
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 actually I have also heard about just hand sanding with 200 400 and finishing with 600 do you know anything about that method?
@@johnetherington6801 Depends which Chinese cue and whether it is actually ebony or just black as it could be ebonex (man made material).
Wiechester
What do you use to polish it ?? . Thanks
Generally a cotton towel
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 Thank you
I currently have linseed oil on my cue which gives the ash a bit of an orange/ brown tint to it, which I'm not fan of. What would you recommend putting on a cue to keep the ash's white colour?
Hiya Just try and find a clear linseed oil. They are all processed differently and some are bleached so clearer.
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 OK, thank you. It was silly of me to assume they were all the same colour, now that I think about it.
Thanks for the video! I don't own a lathe either. The first phenolic tip I put on fell off after roughly 10 breaks. I scored it with 220 grit. I'll try 80 this time.
Is it possible to bend/ clamp the cue into position then apply the steam?
I guess if you have a steam gun that will reach even the section that the cue is clamped against. I would think it's still easier to steam first then quickly clamp.
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 OK, thank you.
How much is it for a full cue refurb, and do you just post them to you, how dose it work
Best to contact me through the snooker crazy website. Thanks.
What’s the benefit of a titanium ferrule Marc?
Hi Mike The thinking is that as titanium has less mass the cueball will throw less once struck; people seem to be sat in two camps as to whether they agree or not. I change a lot to titanium which players seem to want to improve the throw on their long game. What players generally don't take into account is that if throw is in fact reduced they they will not only have to adjust for their long game, but also for their short game when they're in the balls. It's always been s great debate but most stick with brass unless really searching for an edge in their game or really struggling on long shots. Lots of varied opinions on this topic though.
Watching you ‘score the base’ with a scalpel that near to you fingers made my teeth itch😮😂
Can you please fix your creaky floorboard? 👍👍👍👍
After watching this, I'd absolutely never ever consider buying one of these :( what a contraption
They're certainly not easy to set up!
After grain filling I'd normally sand with 600, then 8 and 1200
What do you use for fine sanding, after using the grain filler
Hi Mark. I see you see you refurb cues.. could you do a refurb with new ferrule and tip?
Hi Richard Yes, refurbs and tips on a daily basis. Contact us through the Snooker Crazy website for details.
Okay, let's see you do this on one of your expensive cues 😂😂
Hi Mike The very expensive ones generally don't have lacquer but yes, I've done it to a fair few Rileys between 5 to £700 and then grain filled and added a wax oil mixture to give a decent finish.
@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 Surely you don't get the blades out on the expensive cues do ya ?
