The downfalls of daily driving a 60 year old classic! Daily salt removal detail!
Yep...This is becoming a regular thing at the moment!
The R16 is getting used but not abused in this weather, and corrosion concerned I've been spending a lot of time giving her a blast down every day. Today was a proper wash though, so might as well give you some brain rot content to stick on in the background. ;)
Master cylinder is here, brake hoses are here...Once the brake pistons arrive we can get a rebuild on the go and do the brakes whilst Salv is sorting the electronic ignition.

Selling my Citroen BX 16V...What have I done! We bought a Renault Estafette 3 hours later...
มุมมอง 1.2K7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The opinion was a unanimous no, I shouldn't sell my 16V Citroen BX. But...And it's a really big but. Someone got in touch who was so enthusiastic and in every way was the "right" owner for this car that if I didn't pull the trigger, I might not have ever found someone who made me feel so confident about the cars future. I nearly backed out of the deal multiple times over the last few weeks, but...
Renault R16: Fixing the fuel level sender...For now! It's goosed!
มุมมอง 2497 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I'm sick of full tanking the 16 and guessing the contents....So we pulled the sender out to have a look. Unfortunately, it's goosed. But whilst there, could we cobble together a quick fix so I can enjoy it and have it working for now? You bet!

Algorithms are a strange thing...About a month ago I decided to change the format of how we share our progress, adventures and work changed and I decided to start documenting our progress on TH-cam. Renault R16: POV daily driving a 60 year old classic car, at night. In -3* cold!
มุมมอง 1.3Kวันที่ผ่านมา
You asked, I listened and I weirdly enjoyed it! We were asked to do a POV video of driving the Renault 16, and reading the comments wow did it bring back some memories for viewers. But lots of people wanted to see a night time drive with dash illuminations, talk about how the heating and ventilation worked and to take a trip down memory lane for those cold mornings and nights...Pulling out the ...
Classic Car Maintenance: Changing the water pump and alternator belt on a Renault 16
มุมมอง 500วันที่ผ่านมา
You spoke, I listened! In this episode we will tackle replacing the alternator and water pump belts on the Renault R16. This should be essential #maintenance on your #classiccars and certainly should be something to refresh in your #classiccarbuild or #restoration. The setup on the Renault R16 is interesting, using shims to space out the V drive on the pulley so the belt tension gets greater or...
Renault R16: 10 minutes of uninterrupted driving, and nothing more.
มุมมอง 2.5Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Well, Algorithms are a weird thing! A couple of people asked for a forward facing, first person view to remind them of what it was like to drive one of these. Before I take the distributor off to send it away for electronic ignition conversion and a refresh, I'm going to tick that box. Tomorrow morning, come rain or shine I'm going to make a video showing inside, outside, front and back of a dr...
Renault R16: I was going to set the timing and give it a tune...But went for a drive instead!
มุมมอง 1.4Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Not everything goes quite to plan, there's a bit of a theme here! I intended on cleaning out the distributor, cleaning up the points, showing you how to set the ignition timing and then give the carb a tune with the CO meter to get it all within MOT spec. However, the cam on the distributor is heavily worn so I'd be flogging a dead horse. No amount of setup is going to get this one right. So, I...
No pressure! Have we saved our classic Renault R16 from a full engine build?
มุมมอง 2.5K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Well this is the final part of the low oil pressure, knocking bottom end saga... Lots of people said this needed the crank out and a regrind, that I was throwing effort and cash down the drain. But lots of people also said this was going to be a perfectly serviceable repair. After a lot of guidance from the classic Renault community, overnight parts from Salv (Renault engine building Renault!) ...
Renault R16: Big end bearing replacement and oil pump fitting. The saga continues!
มุมมอง 1.6K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
First off, before we go any further....Thank you. Everyone who has liked or commented on these R16 videos has inspired me to get this job done. When it would be so much easier to push it aside, I feel like we're in this together and I don't just owe it to the car but to you. So, with that out the way today we had another late night (it's 11PM as I type this...) putting the bottom end back toget...

We are making quick progress, but I feel we are going to hit a stumbling block soon waiting for the new shells! In this video we are going to remove the oil pump, explain how it works, show you the results of poor maintenance and why you should do this job ASAP! Well, where do we start with this one. After 300 trouble free miles and running like a dream this week, the #renault #r16 picked up a little bottom end knock. So we immediately abandoned our run to the coffee shop, gently drove it back to base and set about finding the cause! There's lots to go at on this one, and ultimately I wish I'd of dropped the sump and checked the pickup pipe earlier. Bu...

Every Renault R16 seating position, so ahead of it's time modern cars don't even do this!
มุมมอง 88321 วันที่ผ่านมา
One of the comments on the Renault R16 was how good it would be to see all of the interior versatility of the Renault R16, because there's a lot to go at! Hopefully this video will be either nostalgic for people who have had these, or eye opening for people that haven't. But Renault really were onto something with this! I particularly love the "full bed" position. :p

congrats on your success. our values tend to get skewed online and on social media, as we constantly compare ourselves to other people. but 16k people tuning in to a video is not nothing, and with your likeability and gift of gab, I'm pretty sure you could really make a go of this. sorry for the rant, here's my channel name suggestion: Runs & Drives
You take good care och your 16. We R16 owners thank you for that.
i daily a 85' Ford, i love it but id rather take the rust as it comes than to toothbrush it everyday :-)
the column change looks very slick
Great cars!
Mi sono iscritto al canale, se passi dal mio forse trovi cose di tuo interesse, grazie e ciao Fabrizio like 166
Do make sure you wash out the extensions that carry the rear torsion bar outer bearings - it's a real mud and rust trap.
I always missed an R16 as a background vehicle in the Endeavour series, it perfectly matches the sixties and let's face it the 16 was a revolutionary concept.
I have been a fan of the R16 since I was a kid. I would LOVE to have one, but can never find any for sale 😢
Never sell a hydraulic Citroen. You will always regret it. 😅
I like your Renault 16. It looks good after a wash and clean. Very nice car indeed.
Congrats on the milestone 👍 RetroNET or NETClassics?
Great seeing old Renault's getting some love on here, loads of classic Citroens but so few Renault, Peugeot, Simca etc
What do you do for modern day fuel being so high octain? Give her fill up on me. And yes that car Is a her!
On my younger 2002 BMW I’m power washing the under side and then spraying Bill Hamber Atomic which is supposed to neutralise the salt… we will see if that works!
Fingers crossed, It's always about cleaning the awkward bits you can't get to easily.
There are a few products used by 4wd drivers and boats for getting rid of salt. There's a nifty fitting I've seen for pressure washing that you slide under the car and it blast washes the undercarriage to shift mud, sand and salt...
@chriscansdale6389 unfortunately these sorts of things also tend to remove any underseal, and unless you thoroughly dry and seal after washing the underneath like that will usually do more harm than good. 😭 I'm lucky, Monsieur Paul does Ice Blasting. So once the winter is out the way we can dry ice blast it, see what's there and restore and seal it all so future maintenance should he a lot easier. 😍
@@NorthEastTuning fortunately they don't salt our roads here in Australia..😁
A satisfying repair as it must be a nightmare without a fuel gauge! Can't wait for the next video!
I really love the sound of the Estafette! Super!!
It looks gorgeous! Great find 👍
My Dad had a 69 R16 as did a friend. Dad's stuck on FULL and had to be replaced, my friend's float developed a leak and sank. He made a new float from part of a turkey baster which lasted for years until the car was rear ended and totaled. I had a 71 and never had an issue with the fuel gauge. Maybe they changed something or I just lucked out.
North East Resto Classics
OK, I told you not to sell, hey ho. That BX can be replaced, but for heavens sake don't sell the ZX16V, the chances of finding another one are vanishing small.
The new van is mint but what are you doing with these cars 😂
I've exclusively followed your R16 videos thus far, but incidentally I've got a BX as well at the moment. I honestly don't care for post-70's cars though, it has to be said, and its sole purpose for me is to get me around during winter (mid-to-south Swedish winter roads are always dirty, slushy and most importanty salted, so it's customary to get yourself a dedicated winter car if you're driving around in classics otherwise), but it's coping well with the winter I have to say, and the ride comfort is obviously beyond compare. Can't wait for springtime to arrive and the salt to disappear though so I can get the R16 and the ID19 back on the road again. Then I'll most likely get rid of the BX, hopefully it won't have gathered too much additional rot by then.
You could call it ''Classic French Fun''🤣
Can you cancel the BX sale? Seriously, that one was too good. I think most car guys need one hydropneumatic Citroen in their life.
I'm in the US and when I was six my Dad bought a 1960 Estafette. For the US it was labeled "Petit Panel" as it was a panel van. This was the first year for them here. I remember it had a recall for something in the front wheel area. I don't know if it was drive shafts or a suspension part. It had an 1100 CC engine and was slow as molasses but it always started and he used that poor thing to death. He built a patio behind our house with concrete and hauled all the sand in it, many loads. The sand yard put too much in it one time and it hauled it home, but our house was on a small hill and with the extra sand it couldn't climb the hill even in first gear. He used a wheelbarrow to lower the load and it made it. No denying that poor thing was overloaded. It had a sliding driver's door and a side sliding door for the cargo area, and the back had a tailgate above two small doors. During the second year they were selling them the infamous "chicken tax", a tariff of 30%, went into effect against European trucks. Renault bailed on the trucks. VW fully outfitted the interior with three rows of seats and wall panels etc. and renamed it a Station Wagon (estate) and avoided the tariff. After several years the inevitable happened, the too tiny engine backfired it's last spur and went to iron heaven. Parts were hard to get by then so it was Adios Amigo. It had a strange shift pattern, almost the normal H pattern but reversed front to back. First was left and back, second straight ahead, third right and back, fourth right and forward. Does yours have the same pattern?
Are those 2CV wheels?
The Renault 16 content has been amazing. And the way you talk about your cars is infectious too. Great that the channel has had so much traction !
This looks amazing!!
Took me 2 years to get this far, just found the channel, well done for the growth! No idea on a channel name, I need to reconsider mine, nobody can find it 😬
An Estafette - excellent! Far more 'cool' and exclusive than the now-ubiquitous Citroën 'H'.
How about "A Very French Affair", "Rustiqué Restorations" or "The Francophile Fettler"
what about ...." The good the bad and the fixable"....;-)
All thanks to the little Renault 16. Vive la France!
And long may it continue! I've made a few substantial sacrifices lately to ensure it's long term content-worthiness as we push on with the resto! Love that car, it's amazing.
You were doing really well And then you mentioned the 309 was going to be star of the show Viewers tuned in for a 60s classic Renault 16 More rare stuff
Don't panic, we've got plenty of rare Renault stuff coming up don't worry. But I really do think the home built turbo 309 will attract a great audience, it's an incredibly unique car that's been built to be used. My plan is to keep playlists for each project, so viewers can dip into the content they like and turn off the stuff they don't.
@NorthEastTuning 309 will get attention from younger viewer's I'm 53 so like the 60s and 70s stuff Renault 5 with umbrella gear change be good Id love one but not seen a right hand drive one for 30 odd year's ( My mum had one) In the Late 70s
@@User-wollswoycegawage well...I know where there's TWO dash change early 5's and I'm champing at the bit to buy one. But they're a little out of my price range and not for sale yet. But when they are you're guaranteed a video! I MIGHT be able to get a introduction and walk around video to one shortly. ;)
@NorthEastTuning that would be great to see are they right-hand drive? Remember my mum's was low geared N reg TL and body roll Security van hit side of it written off Red with black vinal seats Mum was a crap driver but she used that gear change no problem
@User-wollswoycegawage both RHD, both absolutely showroom restored examples. One floor change, one dash change. Both in launch colours. 😍 This is what I love, all these old motoring stories and memories of family cars that have stuck with you for years. I have amazing memories as a kid of my mums diesel Citroen AX floating down a river then driving out the other side. 😂😂😂
Throughly enjoyed your Renault 16 appraisal and escapades! Anyone can splash out and drive around in fast moderns, but it’s a special breed that dedicates (or is daft enough) to take on these unappreciated classics, they always make for a good story.

Awesome, been at it years and not there. Your style of recording works very well for the viewer 👍🏼
Honestly though, your content cars and personality is fantastic. I've been watching your content for years and I absolutely love everything you do, I've even followed some of your old cars on the market and tried to buy them. When me and Paul are on a road trip we should meet up and film some stuff, not for the content...I just really want to meet you and see your amazing cars!
@NorthEastTuning sounds good to me, I should take a trip to yours! Did mention to paul about letting me know when you are down my way again. Hopefully catch up soon 👍🏼 keep up the vids too, great content
I've always wanted to have a classic car, and my goal is to get an old Mini in British Racing Green. I do most of the work on my current car myself. Watching this channel gives me hope that I might achieve this! Watching this channel gives me hope I might achieve this! Thanks.

I never gave R16s a second glance, thanks for showing us around your little gem. Looks a smidge more civilized than my beloved 2CV - love it. :)
lovely video mate, i have an mk1 twingo myself and looking at the budget swap options for now:)
Rest assured I'll be following whatever you'll be doing with the R16! Just wondering though, have you considered hunting down a 5-speed gearbox for it? That's the one thing I'd possibly would want to anoint my own R16 with down the line, just to dial down the motorway revs somewhat. The TX (which was never sold here in Sweden, don't know about the UK) came with that gearbox, as did the Lotus Europa as far as I know, so they are attainable.
Hi mate, are you able to do the same for other customers who have the same issue? Just enquiring how much this would cost? Thanks
I love this these.
What I love: You have such warmth and devotion. I had three R16s. I'm 65 now. I'd love another. May never happen! Watching this makes me relive the car and there is a real joy in the videos. Thank you.
Still wish I had one!
The R16 was my second car. Loved it and all the Renaults of the era. Thanks for sharing, especially your driving POV. Takes me back to my youth in Australia😊
