Miloliʻi - Nāpali Coast, Kauaʻi. Book
Miloliʻi will be published in January of 2019, please visit www.timdelavega.com/milolii-book for more information.
Aloha, I am a photographer who has been documenting the NaPali coast of Kauai for over 25 years.
My latest book is on my large format archival documentation of the ancient Hawaiian sites located in Miloliʻi, a district within the Napali Coast State Park. This is the first in a series on the land districts within the park.
This Hardbound, archival book is 12 wide and 10 1/4 inches tall with over 150 pages.
It opens with the Hawaiian place names, winds of Milolii and ancient Hawaiian legends, to pay homage to those that lived here for over 700 years.
Each section is broken down into the basic types of sites, such as Heiau or Hawaiian temples, with if possible their name and any information from Hawaiian sources or scientific research.
Extensive research was done into the ancient Hawaiian legends and newspapers Dr. Keao NeSmith, Kauaiʻs preeminent Hawaiian scholar and myself.
And many of the archaeologist, including Myra Tomonari-Tuggle, Martha Yent, Alan Carpenter, Summer Moore and Dr. Jennifer Kahn have written on their research and findings in Milolii.
Inside we tell the story of the Hale pili, The last Hawaiian traditional grass house, which was removed from Milolii in 1900 and moved to the Bishop Museumʻs Hawaiian Hall, where it stands today.
Renowned archaeological artist Diana Izdebski has contributed numerous drawings of artifacts and how Milolii may have looked in 1650.
For me this book was produced as my way to Malama Miloliʻi, to care for and help protect this sacred land through documentation and education.

I’ve camped there 6-8 times over the years, legally, with permits. ‘Locals’ are given a break while law abiding people are hassled. I’ve been threatened with being run over in my tent at Haena Beadh park by crack head locals in trucks. F*ck them, ignorant locals are to blame. Ignorant mokes.

I have had this bookmarked for several years and watch it every so often as the quality is very good. I lived at Wake during the end of 1968 and most of 1969 when I was a USAF Security Policeman, Det. 2, 61st MAW which was part of MAC. We were in the typhoon hardened barracks next to the mess hall just a few feet from the bridge which connected Wake to Peale Island where the Coast Guard operated a LORAN station right at the tip of Peale. Now there are just the pylons remaining of the bridge. Back then we were allowed to drive right out to the tip of Wilkes Island but were not to disturb the birds. I greatly enjoyed my duty at Wake even though many men hated being on a remote location. It was especially nice that no one was shooting at us as could happen in SEA.

did you see any hydroponic gardens on the island at that time? I am doing some research on them. There was an amazing garden setup there as an experimental farm lead by Dr. Gericke from the University of California. It was the first of its kind to provide fresh produce to the people who lived there.

@@freedomradio5602 Hi Jeff, As far as I knew, we got all of our food from the U.S. mainland and/or Hawaii. We were restocked about every month and when it got close to the next shipment (by ocean vessels), some items were not so good tasting. This was especially true for potatoes. Most of the food was frozen in large freezers by the mess hall. The food was generally exceptionally good because they served officers and EM flight crews. There was no separate officers mess. As I recall, Sunday's main item was prime rib of beef au jus and Wednesday was superb thick grilled steak done to your preference. After a year though, it actually did get a bit boring because they mostly had a similar menu each week. Even back in the states, the food in EM mess halls seemed very good to me. At that time, the main island support personnel were Filipinos and they would sometimes have a luau and roast a pig on the beach. They must have special ordered such an item. Potable water was an issue. There were two lines coming in to the barracks. One fresh water and one salt water for toilets. Perhaps hydroponics would not take too much water to operate? The source of potable water was partially from the catchment basins and the rest had to be made from a desalination plant. We were not allowed to go near such facilities. That included much of the island (only a bit over 2 square miles of land) because of privacy of some staff with their children (up through 8th grade), and security of communications which we were not even allowed to ask about to our fellow EM's in the Comm Group.

A lot of the trash there is from the over tourism allowed by local government. The 1000s given permits definitely left more trash than the small community who live where the trash was left. Hippies were used as a scapegoat, even if they had some role in the problem the government refused to acknowledge their much larger role in the issue.

It's like what we were just saying. these modern hippies seem to be of a fake nature. Drum circles and look at me .but not the it's our job to save the world. or even the place where hanging out at. They drive gas-guzzling cars and bring spray paint on hikes. And they think that they're fashion sense .makes them a hippie.. Real hippies know how to backpack .know how to take out everything they bring into a destination... Homeless losers make a mess and expect other people that clean it up... If you're going to be a hippie. be a real hippie.

The DLNR are the instigators, and do nothing to keep Kalalau clean. People also shouldn't be in the valley if they're going to leave crap behind. But, if you notice a lot of the "trash" left behind are things like brand new tents, rust-free cast-iron Dutch ovens (?!), drums and instruments that are in decent shape (before a ranger got ahold of it, anyway), basically stuff nobody in their right minds would ever leave unless forced to. Once again, the DLNR grasps straws to appear useful to the ignorant, unquestioning, and unobservant....nice try.

I've camped there 5-6 times, and paid for my permit each time. Each trip, we run into people like this nut job who feels she's entitled to not follow the rules. Trash piles up when people leave their stuff at camp sites. I wish they would enforce the rules more often, theses people are ruining it. Stay away.

I think its horrible that someONE abused the ancient hawaiian structure, rock wall. That is horrible. But it was probably done by one person, not done by all "Kalalau Outlaws". I bet all this trash was left behind, because of your attempts at evicting these "Outlaws" and threatening them with possible arrest. If you hadnt helicoptered in to evict them, they would most likely have backpacked their stuff out of the valley. I know some people who spend lots of time out there, and since they overstay the 5 day limit, I guess they are "Outlaws"... but they are very environmentally conscious people, and I know none of them would damage ancient hawaiian artifacts, and none would trash the valley. You are stereotyping these people by your flying in and scaring them off, I am sure some of these camps you claim to be trash, the people scurried off into the valley to wait you out, and would have then returned once you left, and therfore had no intention of leaving this stuff there.

I worked and lived on Wake from 1991 to 1999. Chopin's interludes captures the essence of the time that I spent there. Solitude, freedom from stresses of everyday life as we live it here on the mainland, fresh air without smog and air pollution, good friends to work with, Thai hospitality were all apart of life there. Thanks for your video.

Fear! Fear What?...fearing a citation for illegally camping & trespassing: I've lived in Hawaii all my life, traveled the world a few times over...this is the very same behavior I've seen in many parts of the continental U.S. and elsewhere. Trespassing & Camping violators have no respect or appreciation, they discard they're misc trash as if it's culturally acceptable. Interesting when pressure is applied to assure compliance they promote a sense of entitlement and victimization!....
