Welcome to my TH-cam channel. I'm Michael Nesi and and I've had the great fortune to study with a lot of amazing drummers over the years. I wanted to create a community where I can not only share things passed on to me but also my own ideas. Since I was young, I have taken musical assignments well beyond what was asked of me. A simple assignment in many cases has turned into lifelong pursuits, for example I have hundreds of Alan Dawson like systems that I have developed to assist me in learning a particular topic or area and I think these may also be found useful to others.

So simple but it sounds just right! By the way do you use the closed auxilliary hihat much in swing or is more there for other styles? Thanks so much :)
@@nickbirkby2521 thanks not much at all in Jazz.
Very inspiration! Thanks for sharing
@@vicenteperellobateria thank you for watching!
Great playing, sir. I´m off drumming for more than 20 years, but I´m planning to be back in the saddle this year. I Would love to see your study room, or something like that. My plan is to get a jazz drum set to bring my old form back, but I don´t know how much room/isolation I need.
Bop kits are small, I have my basement which is not finished but it works for my practice. I know people that use a section of their garage, whatever works. I also have a kit that I call my quiet kit, it is a low cost bop kit with quiet cymbals and low volume heads. That allows me to really practice and make lots of mistakes and noise without concerns about bothering anyone else I my house. Hope this helps! Good luck with drumming again!
@@michaelnesi0827 Thank you, Michael. I´ll look for those low volume options too.
trying my best to be a well rounded drummer and every day i realize how much more i need to practice thanks for the vid
Me too! Thanks for watching.
That was smooth as butter. I've tried the drums a couple of times, and it wasn't easy for me at all. Good stuff!
@@HalibasterDillibickus thanks very much!
@@michaelnesi0827do you have the transcription of this? 👏🏼

Phenomenal layering. The toms are hypnotizing. So musical. Is it a two measure poly rhythm? Very cerebral dude
@@adamhenke-h8t thank you very much! I am playing one measure from Ari Hoenig’s Book Systems, it is in Melody 8. I then disperse that rhythm between snare, hi hat, and bass drum. Because the measure has 7 notes that 3 voice motif takes 3 measures to cycle. It turns the one measure into a 3 measure groove. I then take the first snare of each measure and play a cross stick, any other snares will be on a Tom, one measure has three snares. Which ever limb starts the measure has three the others two. It creates some very interesting patterns. This method cancan be used with any genre.
@michaelnesi0827 . Wow, Michael. Blown away brother! Thank you so much for describing this beat. Gunna take me a couple times to understand what you wrote. So, cool to read, see, hear, and feel what your playing. Legit Honor. thanks again. hopefully it takes me a month of two to get it down!
@@adamhenke-h8t I have a few videos on this topic with more explanations, I will create a pdf for this. Thanks for watching! th-cam.com/video/DUdlM98RMZE/w-d-xo.html
How do you record these? Like mics etc?
@@contactkeithstack all my videos are recorded with my iPhone on a tripod. I have a usb mic that I use for lessons sometimes with my computer which might be seen in some videos. Thanks for asking.

Michael, did the record come with a book?- I assume so.. Any impressions?
@@nickbirkby2521 it does I don’t have it though. One came up for sale on eBay recently but I was out bid, it sold for 200.
@@michaelnesi0827 Thats a lot! Though it must be very rare. Quite an interesting character, not a lot of info online, its quite intriguing. Thank you for posting the recording!
Some interesting ride variations.
There is a second record as well, I just can't seem to find it anywhere.
Thank you for the lesson and pdf! I like the extra hihat, thats not something Ive seen before in jazz context.
Thank you!
Nice! What hi hats are those?
Istanbul Agop 30th Anniversary 14", same in 12" on the other side.
what mic did you use?
I have a very small production, every video I have posted is simply recorded with my iPhone. I have a USB Mic you may see dangling above is some videos, I only use that for lessons, when my playing is not coming through, never for recording.
Hi, apart from the snare/toms alternating, and the snare/hh/bd thing, are you following a particular phrasing on that one? thanks
Yes, there is a detailed explanation on this video. th-cam.com/video/DUdlM98RMZE/w-d-xo.html
I am using top line from melody 8 in Ari Hoenig's book.

Its like a puzzle that must be put together...WHAT JAZZ IS THIS?!
It is just a way I practice. If I am working on a solo, Pot Luck is pretty Fast, both are 12 bar blues so I loop the Pot Luck solo against this and other slower tunes like "Blues for Elvin", a lot of fun.
Clean, cool & timeless ☺️👌🏻

It an exercise from his book.
Nice work. Are you primarily interested in jazz drumming? If so, what prompted you to use match grip? I played a lot of rock and enjoyed attempting prog rock and fusion so match just seemed logical. Also, I play open handed on a righty kit. Just wondered
@@jivadaya6439 I am also an open handed player, everything I play I can also play left hand lead. I have skills playing traditional but the open handed playing (because I am nuts), forced me to have to practice traditional grip both righty and lefty. So I decided to focus on match, I also play a lot of genres.
@@michaelnesi0827 Thanks for the response. Once again, I enjoy watching you play, my hat is off to you, sir
