Lengthen and Shorten Patterns for Sewing with a Projector
I’ve made a sewing pattern but had to manually break it up into A4 to be able to print and stick together at home. Any tips on how to now have to do this?
@@pinkscampi You want to make a printable sewing pattern? You’d need to make a template in Inkscape for print at home files. This video shows how it’s done in Adobe Illustrator, but it can be done in Inkscape too. th-cam.com/video/NB_g2_kKd38/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0pgUbVcCjSEbLfK0
I didn't get anything 😔
The written tutorial is in the description if you want to give that a try instead.
Could I use a 3x5 index card instead of a large ruler for % adjustment size?
I would use something larger, unless it’s a small pattern such as a bag or baby clothing. You could use a piece of 8.5x11 piece of paper in a pinch if the pattern is the size of a shirt or skirt. Larger rulers help with accuracy over large areas.
Good to know. Thank you.
@@projectorsewingDo you have directions for InkScape? Seems for step 4 there is no PLACE selection in InkScape. My photo has all pieces on 1 photo. Also no document set up for 150”x150” that I found. Maybe you have another video for it? TY
@@dr.jerilynvogelsang3922 I do not currently have a video on how to do this in Inkscape. The concept is the same, but some buttons and operations are slightly different.
@@projectorsewing Thank you for your reply. I found your Inkscape video and look forward to getting that all set up.
Excellent
@@dr.jerilynvogelsang3922 Thank you!
Having the setup be wireless would be so useful! Thank you so much for sharing this.
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
I’m so cutout how you cut pattern pieces that are larger than your cutting mat and projected area? Do you just keep recalibrating everytime you need to move and cut part of the pattern price and try and line up the semi-cut pattern piece with the uncut pattern piece?
Does it have a port for an hdmi cable . Thanks for you video
Yes! It does.
This is so genius ❤❤❤

@@LeenSewing Thanks!
What projector are you using
Happy new year!! What if the pdf is in landscape instead of portrait?
@@heatherleeying353 it all depends on how the pattern is laid out. It can be straightforward or complicated. You can rotate all the pages together if you need. The hardest part will be determining which pages attach to which. You’ll need to put the page numbers in that order in the “stitch pages” section. Give it a try and if you need help post in the Projectors for Sewing Facebook group!
What’s the projector ur using in this video
@@The_valerieforever I’m using the projector reviewed in this video th-cam.com/video/_BejqZc_-OQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MosaxAM0yQgbxSNz
@@The_valerieforever It’s the Magcubic again. 😆
Can you produce the name of the projectors that’s on the tripod and hanging from the ceiling 2025 goals. I was going to purchase a ust off eBay it used so idk
@@The_valerieforever It is the Magcubic that is reviewed in this video; th-cam.com/video/_BejqZc_-OQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZHL2fI9RRNPtq8vB The used UST usually work great too and the bulbs can be replaced.
I have the same setup, i believe, as the first one. (Same projector and mat.. 55" x 33". ) But my projector doesn't cover the full mat like your video. I thought o needed a higher stand. Any suggestions?
You have an UST on a TV stand, correct? If so, you should be able to raise the projector up and achieve a larger image.
@projectorsewing thank you for posting this post. I have put sewing on hold because i couldn't get it too filll my table after getting the tv stand and thought i needed a higher stand.i just went in and started from basics and i think my keystone settings weren't right with me setup. I have it fixed now, so thank you for the prompting. 😁 Seeing it could be done with my exact setup was fabulous!

i cant wait to start using my projector after seeing your videos. Im all set up but i may have to wait until after Christmas because there is so much to learn even though you make it look and sound so easy. A new subbie from Ontario, Canada 😊🇨🇦🫶
Good luck on getting setup! Dont feel like you need to learn everything at once. 😉 Setup and calibration are the first step. Glad to have you along! ❤
You do such a great job with your videos and all the elements you incorporate. Thank you.
@@joanneharvey246 thank you for your sweet comment ❤️
My Adobe Reader for Android doesn't look anything like that, and there's no layers icon at all
Are you on the phone app? The app is very different from the desktop version. It doesn’t have the ability to view layers in the app.
@projectorsewing it's the Android app (on my tablet). All the YT vids and online problem solving, say it has layers but show a screen totally different to mine 🤷♀️
@@cassieoz1702The layers feature is not available on the Acrobat Reader app for phones and tablets. You can use Xodo app to view layers. For sewing, we now use PatternProjector.com to view patterns.
thank you, i usually just tape when there is no projector file. I'm going to try this now.
This was so helpful in my decision to purchase the Ditto. THank you
Yup, takes up very little space and in my case I'm about to gain a ton of space when I pack these paper/printed patterns away.
If you have a choice between the Magcubic or Epson LCD H744A PowerLite 685W Ultra Short-Throw Hdmi Projector ...which one would you choose? I cannot mount to the ceiling and would need a TV stand. Also, I will have to use an iPad Gen9.
It really is personal preference. I prefer the Magcubic to my ultra short throw projector. I like it mounted on the ceiling, but a tension rod with a clamp camera mount or tripod work too. However, if those mounting solutions do not work for you, the UST would be a better choice. The TV stand is only for the ultra short throw projectors. The Magcubic comes with Airplay built-in. With an UST you need to use HDMI or get a casting device that’s compatible with Apple and iPads (not google Chromecast).
@@projectorsewing Thank you very much! I will order the Magcubic and an extension arm. I have 12' vaulted ceilings, skylights and an oversized ceiling fan, so a tripod with extension arm is probably my only option.
@@projectorsewing How did you mount it? I don't see any way to screw it onto an extension arm.
@@lizallonewordHey! No need for an extension arm! This projector can point away from the tripod legs and has a great auto keystone feature. That combined with patternprojector(dot)com for calibration and you should be good! The written article has a photo of the tripod setup you can look at again. projectorsewing.com/magcubic-projector-review/
This didn’t seem to work for me. Is there any other way to unlock the PDFs?
Yes, you can use the new program PatternProjector.com It is used for projecting, but you can also unlock a pattern with it. Click “Open PDF”, click on the picture of six rectangles (stitching option). An “export” button will appear. Export and save to your device. It should be unlocked and ready to use in Affinity Designer.
thank you for this tutorial. I would love to know how to do a full belly adjustment in Affinity Designer
Oh I wish I had this one. I’d like a larger throw. But my ceilings are concrete in my apt bldg. I don’t think more ceiling holes is a good idea 😢
The tensions rod or tripod setup can work for you! No ceiling holes. Checkout this article in the mounting section projectorsewing.com/magcubic-projector-review/
Great review thanks. I need a bright light, so this one won’t make me happy. Guess I’ll have to stick to my Epson UST for now, even though it’s big and runs hot.
The idea of this product is nice, but i am not sold. I see a lot of extra cost in comparison to physical patterns, but i am not seeing any time saving. The only time saving i see here is the actual cutting which is a small, small portiin of sewist time. The fact it can't turn off sizes even is a huge downer to this. Major improvements needed a long with purchasers cost reduction.
Sounds like you need to look at a DIY sewing projector. 😉 They start at $50. And there are many great PDF pattern companies out there!
This didn’t help me I’m More lost then ever but you did amazing who ever understand this
You have helped me so much with Inkscape already!

@@jancpartridge Thank you! 💕
Great video!! Exactly what I needed.
Love it! I specifically came to your channel looking to find a video where I could ask this question since I wanted a simplicity pattern I couldn't find in the store and they have the PDF/Print option on their site and felt there had to be a way to take advantage of the PDF / projector option :)
@@garya1809 Yes, you can stitch them together. However, most of the Simplicity patterns are not layered. They are images of the pattern. So, be aware of that.

Great Fall pattern choices! I'm new to projector sewing, and very intimidated, but I'm looking forward to having a block of time to play with my birthday prize! Thanks for this video!!
@@krisl.4962 Thank you! Have a great time with your new setup! 🎉
OMG i spent the afternoon trying to work on 1000+ paths and nodes from a Garment Designer pattern i made trying to stich all the paths together when all i wanted to do is just trace it.... now I know how! Thank you 😊
I’m having trouble with calibrating my image to be totally square. Do all these projectors you recommend have keystone adjustments? Mine doesn’t. It’s ceiling mounted, and perfectly square in the center, but distorted at the outer edges.
Yes, all of these projectors have keystone adjustments. Some are manual with a dial around the edge, others use digital keystone which can be found in the projector settings menu. However, if you use Pattern Projector to calibrate, perfect keystone adjustments don’t really matter anymore.
@@projectorsewing if this works, I'll buy you a gallon of coffee!
When I select a pattern piece which I want to alter, I am getting small boxes (with dotted outlines) surrounding segments of the pattern. For instance, there is one around the neckline, one around the shoulder seam and on around the armscye etc. Why are these there. With that one pattern piece selected, I am unable to change the stroke colour or width. Are there some sort of settings that I need to change?
The small boxes are also stopping me from being able to duplicate the entire pattern piece. I have tested this on more than one pattern from different designers with the same results.
@@elisewilliams8681which designer is it? Without seeing a photo, there are two possibilities that come to mind. First, you may need to ungroup the pattern if all of the pattern pieces are grouped together. Second with the neckline being seperate from the armscye, it sounds like the pattern lines are not joined. You can use the node tool to select the nodes on two parts of the pattern and join. This can be time consuming though. Sometimes it can be quicker to just trace the pattern with the pen tool depending what you need to do with the pattern. Are you in the projectors for sewing Facebook group? If so you can add a photo and get recommendations there too. Do you just want thicker lines? Or what adjustments are you planning on making?
@@projectorsewing The main pattern I have been trying to work with is a Love Notions pattern, Terra Tunic projector file. I have tried a couple of other designer's pattern and run into the same issue. I have been attempting to do a square shoulder adjustment. If I can get that sorted out, then I'd try a sway back adjustment. I did finally manage to get the lines heavier. Although I'm not sure how I did that. How do I know if the pattern is grouped and how do I ungroup all the pieces? There are tiny spaces between the boxed areas - the shoulder seam and the armscye aren't a continuos line. Yikes, there's a learning curve to this! I am in that Facebook group. I'll look through there and see what else I can find.
@@elisewilliams8681Love Notions have a known issue that the pattern lines are not joined. I find it fastest on Love Notion patterns to just trace the size you need using the pen tool, then do you pattern alterations.
@@projectorsewing Can you suggest a pattern or a designer that I could use just to play in Inkscape with. Preferably a free pattern as I just want to play with it.
I’m so happy to have found you, Sheredith, thanks so much for all this!
You are so welcome! Glad to have you here!❤

Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for your comment!
Thank you. This is so helpful. I was wondering how to do my paper collection.🤯
Glad it was helpful!
What do yo do if you don’t want to cut piece on fold?
In this same program, you can draw a line and flip the pattern along the line to “unfold” it. Another option is to use a graphics program such as Inkscape or Affinity Designer to unfold the pieces. Checkout some of my videos on these programs if you’re interested in learning that.
I have limited space. What would be best to use with a tablet? If any at all? Thanks.
If you have at least 52” from ceiling , I like the Yoton mounted on the ceiling. Comes with builtin WiFi to connect to your tablet. The AAXA is also great if you have a larger budget. It will give you a larger cutting image size. Ultra short throws take a bit more space in the room around the table, so not great for small areas, in my opinion.
where do i get the bodice block?
You can find basic bodice blocks for sale several places. Pattern Lab London will generate one to your measurements. MiSlope is another great one for knit tops.
Yes! It does! Glad I could help!
