Introduction to African Dwarf Frogs (Episode 1)
มุมมอง 123K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this introduction to African Dwarf Frogs, I discuss how to care for these fun, little freshwater amphibians: their appearance, their differences from African Clawed Frogs, their tank requirements, their substrate and decorative preferences, common illnesses, preferred water parameters, appropriate tank mates, and their diet. 00:00 Welcome 00:38 Appearance (distinguishing from African Clawed ...
Don't they need a place to come up on and rest that's out of the water???
ADFs are fully aquatic frogs, so they will only leave the water deliberately if it is a life-or-death situation. (They can't survive very long out of water.)
Love your videos! Please make more on the ADFs
Thank you! I will try!
2024 ❤this information. My handsome 🐸 is my life most days.
Thank you for going into Chytrid a bit. I studied herpetology, and we monitored Hylidae on the field frequently for chytrid. I love the format of your videos. Very reminiscent of the VHS era of information, but I mean that in the best way! It’s so nostalgic and comfy!
Thank you! You sound much more knowledgeable about amphibian diseases than I. Do you have any recommendations on what ADF owners can do when they encounter an illness, other than to see a vet? I get a lot of questions about that. I've seen methylene blue listed as a treatment for various problems, but I haven't had any luck with it on frogs myself.
6:41 that’s very helpful.
song?
It's original music.
Is there a some place where i can your music? @@chrisfishfrogs
@@juaneslava7407 Not really, sorry! This song was just something I did for the frog vids. I do plan to start another channel that is focused on music, but it's not really up and running yet. I do really appreciate your interest, though. Thank you so much!

I know this may seem like some silly questions so I’m sorry if it is, but I know the video mentioned about feeding every day or every other day until the frog is full, but is there an amount recommended for feeding two frogs? (mine will not have fully grown yet) For example is a generous pinch for each or both good? Also as they get older do they need a bigger meal too? I don’t want to under feed or over feed them, if anyone has any in depth tips for this I’d greatly appreciate it😊
It's best to experiment yourself, by observing how much your frogs eat. The best way to do this is to target feed some worms or shrimp, using tongs; feed until they don't eat anymore. This will require some time. Failing that, I would put food in one designated place, like a feeding dish or in a specific corner of the tank. If the food is all gone the next day, try feeding a little more next time. If there's food left over, feed less next time. Good luck!
@@chrisfishfrogs Thank you so much this is really helpful! I’ll definitely monitor closely to see how much they like :)
Chris ur vids are awesome but pls make the bloodworm vid id really think it would help alot hope you will resume uploading again i think it would be really awesome, but you dont have too :)
Thank you! I have multiple more vids planned; just need time to assemble them!
I have seen back and forth on this. I’m currently setting up my tank. I added bio-stratum is that harmful to them? I can take it out but prefer not too because it is for the live plants in it
It's probably okay if it's buried under rocks or sand. You just don't want the frogs accidentally ingesting it. If the frogs are on top of the bio-stratum, there's a small chance they could ingest some, but it's not likely. Good luck!

Hi Chris! ADF owner here, love your videos and can’t wait to see the next!🐸
Thanks so much!
I really enjoyed this video and all this information. I'm currently cycling a 29 gallon tank with 12 inches of water. I would like to know if ADF eat scuds. If so how to you cultivate/raise scuds and daphnia. PLEASE make more videos.
Thank you! Yes, ADFs will eat scuds. I've tried cultivating scuds, but haven't been very successful. When I have done it, it was because they arrived already on plants that I had put in water.
I have a 29 gallon tank with only 12 inches of water that's currently cycling. I like live plants more than the plastic plants, but can't figure out how to plant them with a bare bottom tank.
You can plant them in pots (there are planters available specifically for aquariums: www.aquariumcoop.com/products/easy-planter?srsltid=AfmBOoqy5U445tYCLMgBxRxENglJvlKPDlgnB4yoIPNXIH-pbqY0r6v9). Or you can use floating plants, like water sprite.
Whats the portion for a single frog? I plan on feeding blood worm cubes and potentially beef heart interspersed? Should they get one cube a day? Or will that be too much?
Im prepping to get one frog and a 10 gallon tank, will that be fine for him or her? How high should i fill it? 2/3rds? Or just leave a little space at the top? How much and how often? also do i need a light? If so just led or do they need uvb?
A 10 gallon should be fine for one. You can fill it to the top if you have a lid, otherwise 3/4 full. Light isn't necessary, but it won't hurt.
Get 2 frogs!! They like friends
Sometimes I would put the tiny tadpole pellets in the food bowl first to get a little soft the put in the blood worms mixed in so they would get a bite of everything when they would eat 🙂
I kept my frogs in a 70 gallon tank that I filled 2/3 and they seemed happy with the extra swimming room… I went all out for my babies 🥰🥰…p.s they will try to eat your guppies even though they can’t actually swallow them, I caught my girl in the act with half of the guppie out fighting for its life, that’s when I realized why their tails were all torn (I thought it was the water current and went through like 3 filters🤦🏾♀️ in reality it was just mighty Melissa always looking for easy food even thought she was already overweight ) also dropsy at the vet, there’s little they can do.. one got it and the vet tried to drain it with a syringe but it’s hard to do that with what is essentially a mushy fat quarter that won’t sit still( just getting the weight was a challenge to keep her on the little scale) she later puffed back up. I tried some diy to make her comfortable in the last days like giving it a resting spoon to sit in and lots of attention and a special tea soak calming frog mix thing for their water.. everything in my power/pet store( best thing is prevention, keep anything with abrasive or with sharp/jagged edges out of the tank so they don’t scratch themselves and get infected, when I did that the other two thrived and never ever got sick) also, they can be friendly but they mostly fight… I used chopstick to break it up when I caught it and they would stop and go after the stick instead of each other😂 the girls can be real bullies but they will sometimes swim up to you (I keep an open tank so when I was near they would follow me at the surface, they would also peep their heads out the water when I cooked and keep their head out for a long time smelling zesty air) GREATEST PETS EVER!🥰🥰🥰
12:42 Cute! My African Clawed Frogs are definitely social too. I was wondering if I should get a single African Dwarf Frog for a 1 Gallon Tank I have since I heard 1 Gallon per frog but was unsure because of the fact I heard the same thing about African Dwarf Frogs being social, but perhaps it's not a big deal if I get a single Dwarf Froggy in a 1 Gallon Tank I have?
I think having a single ADF would be fine, but I'd recommend at least a 2.5 gallon for a single adult ADF, preferably a 5 or a 10. One gallon is really going to restrict its movement. If the tank size is set, I'd suggest something else like a betta. Good luck!
Plus when they settle in a fish tank do not move them because each one has a literally a daily routine one of my frogs after feeding takes a bit of food and plays dead under a leaf and same frog every other day he loves to play with the other animals and with the filter flow And swims Up And Down
I will say my ones love playing dead under leaves it’s just so normal to have them to go behind stuff such as filters plants and heaters everything also when he said the species is not strong is not true from my experience
I own 3 of them they are very funny and do not be worried if they look dead they pretend to be dead
Do they need gravel or no
No, they don't. I don't use gravel with mine. They do need places to hide--they love big rocks and plants (fake or live).
This dude dropped 3 bangers in 2022 and dipped
Absolutely fantastic video x thank you
Thanks so much!
Hello! I need some help. About 2 weeks ago I got 6 neon tetras and one African dwarf frog. I put them in a 5 gallon tank. From the beginning the frog wasn’t a good eater and the fish gobbled up their food perfect. Well over the last few days the fish have been dying one by one and had poor appetite. I checked my ph levels in tank and they were perfect so then checked ammonia level and that was the culprit. I changed about 50% of the water and things seemed better but yesterday I lost another fish (I’m down to two now) and this morning I noticed my frog is shedding his skin. Is that normal? And I still have yet to see him eat anything- I have offered blood worms and slow sinking pellets but have not seen him eat anything and I’m worried. Any help/suggestions, thank you.
It sounds like your tank is going through the nitrogen cycle for the first time. Ammonia will not cause your frog to shed, but it might be the culprit if your frog is not eating. (Although it might have eaten its skin.) I suggest doing big water changes daily as your tank spikes in ammonia, then nitrite. Once the nitrite subsides, you can stop doing daily water changes, but that might be a few weeks off. You can get away with doing changes bigger than 50% (like 90%). Just try to match the temperature of the existing water as best you can (they make digital thermometers for aquariums), and make sure to use a dechlorinator liquid. Your priority at this point is to minimize the ammonia, which is highly toxic to your animals. Neon tetras are fairly sensitive, but your frog should be more robust. Good luck!
Shedding is fine and my frog ate its own skin but he is my most healthy frog and is VERY playful
Your frog might be attacking your fish making them weak too then they die, they do it in the dead of night but I’ve caught mine trying to eat my male guppies. Also they need friends.. I rescued my first dwarf frog because he was missing an arm and I felt bad for him and through research I found out they don’t do well on their own, got a few more and it became more active and thrived, they need fellow frogs. Also, too much activities in a small area will heighten chances of sickness especially since the water shouldn’t be changed often so please consider the amount of peers to water and that they absorb everything in the tank with their skin, it’s why I got them a 40 gallon then their 70 gallon oasis eventually. They will explore if you give them more room and be more active. Best of luck to you!
What is the thick, green plant near the top of your tank? Is it a floating plant?
Probably water sprite.
I hear they’re good fry control I was wondering because I want to start a ecosystem with endlers on top breeding and once they breed out of control I want to get African dwarf frogs to populate control will they destroy a colony? Also will they eat the fry in the first place?
The frogs will definitely go after anything that moves in their vicinity. If they're lucky, they'll catch one. But fast fry will be hard for these slow-moving frogs to catch. Frogs will help with fry control, but endlers are pretty quick.
Very helpful & informative but that music is ridiculous so I COULDN'T watch the whole video.
I absolutely loved it and felt it perfectly matched how fun and silly these adorable froggies are.

I still hope to make one!
That’s was the best video on dwarf frogs.

i'm getting 2 +a guppie any beginner tips?
The guppy will eat any food dropped in the tank, so you'll need to target feed your frogs. Good luck, and have fun!
@@chrisfishfrogs ok ty
Awesome tip, thanks @@chrisfishfrogs
If the guppies are male, your frogs might try to eat them unsuccessfully when they get bigger. If they can fit most of it in their mouth, they will try to eat it and your guppies might look like they have fin rot from the ordeal of being almost eaten.🤷🏾♀️ this is from experience and witnessing it in person.
I found out they get them in streams
That makes sense, since they can't reach the top to breathe if the water is too deep.
Will a Beta fish be an ok tank mate?
Yes, but if your frog is aggressive then it might sometimes nip at your fish's tail.
It really depends on the temperament of the beta fish and the frogs. I've had betas which I thought were acclimated to tank mates suddenly become aggressive and kill other fish and constantly harrass the frogs. It's honestly unfortunate but beta fish really are happiest and best off living with no tanks mates in a nice 20 gallon tank.
@@outtarespecttomyfawtha1589lol or with a little crab🦀 🤔 then again the crab did escape 🧐
Thank you, I just added one to my planted community 20gal, he is super cute and goofy looking and seems to enjoy sitting on plants
Awesome! Have fun!
But will the tap water that I use for top offs turn them gay?
They are automatically gay
turn the frickin' frogs gay
Any advice on how to treat when sick? @chrisfishfrogs
That's tough. If it's bloat, then the frog has a chance to live with it for a good while longer. If it's discoloration or fungus, I haven't had good luck in treating it. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!
- Great video but so much for pet stores saying, *"super low maintenance pets"* huh !? 🤔
They certainly aren't self-sufficient. But once you get the hang of them, they're not too bad, compared to some others! :)
Was the “female” you showed a male it had a white dot behind its front leg
It's a female. Females are rounder and larger. The male bump is raised, not just a coloration.
Amazing video !
Thanks so much!
I have been wanting to get some African dwarf frogs for my 10 gallon tank for a while now. It currently is set up more to fit the needs of my 2 guppies that are in there, and thus is about 14 inches deep and has a relatively strong water flow. I have a beta leaf that can be put in as well as a tall standing tree and stump. I clean it every week, but use tap water and its strong filter and overdose of snails does the rest. Is this an okay set up and would they get along with the two male guppies I currently have in the tank?
As long at the frogs have some places to hide, it should be fine. You will likely need to target feed them, though, because the guppies will quickly consume all food before the frogs find it, even if you overfeed. Good luck!
How do you target feed dwarf frogs?

Can i keep these with bristle nose pleco and gourami
just found your channel right after i set up a new 10 gallon for my five lads! would love to see a blackworm cultivation video, i’ve never heard of raising live ones. :)
I hope to make that video at some point! (Fingers crossed.) I have all the footage, just not the time...
we have seven of these little guys, all in a 15 gallon frog-centric tank. their names are as follows, listed in their groups we got them in: Frogface and Fly Buffy (used to have a Boggy as well, however he sadly passed and his tankmates disposed of him) Salti, Spicy, Sofrito, and Sazon.
Do I need to condition their water or do I just put tap water? Sorry if you mentioned this in the video. I went back but can’t seem to find if you mention this.
Hi! I’ve kept frogs and fish for years. Never use tap water, for any aquatic animal you will come across. You need to get a stabilizer and ammonia reducer and have the water treated and cycled with a filter (and heater if it’s a tropical fish) for at least a week beforehand! Buy ammonia test strips, they’ll usually have other tests on them such as ph level, nitrate level, and so on. Regularly check you water as you’re cycling it, and if it looks good, then add your animal! Hope this helped :)
@@vivixenz thank you!! This helped a lot :)
Your tap water will likely contain chlorine and possibly chloramine, so you should condition it first with something like Seachem Prime or Fritz Complete.
@@chrisfishfrogs thank you! This is my first time having frogs and I really want to make sure I do it right :)
I've had 15 now and all of them haven't lived past 2 months, some lasting less then a week, they float at the top barely moving then they die soon after, my tank is a 10 gallon and it's just them according to several experts I'm not doing anything wrong, they die mostly after a water change but I use special amphibian water conditioner before hand as recommended by an expert, Please help! I don't understand what's wrong!
Is the tank filled all the way to the top? If so you need like 2 inches of air
I have well over 2 inches of air
what specific decor and plants are in your tank? what food do you use?
@baehem6608 I have a peice of wood I got from the pet store made for aquariums and I have pothos plant the roots in the water and some green mossy looking stuff I also got from an expert. I use the little aquatic frog pellets in a little blue bottle
@@Syd_The_Sloth that all sounds okay.. do you test and treat your water during water changes? is there any sort of filter, thermometer and heater? edit: sorry, i forgot you said you do condition your water! maybe it’s the source of the frogs? big chain pet stores often don’t treat their animals well, and they may look fine in store but quickly decline due to the stress of being moved. i’m wondering if that’s what it is since your setup sounds alright. are there hiding spots for all of the frogs? lots of hiding spots reduces stress
Why is my African dwarf frog killing its tank mates. Snail, pleco and beta fish. Now I just caught it with the other dwarf frog in its mouth
That's very odd. Are you sure it's a dwarf frog, and not a young clawed frog? It might just be a very aggressive individual.
@@chrisfishfrogs they are dwarf. I’ve pried them apart twice tonight
@@BeckyRamsay-pv6du I'd try to separate them, if you have another tank or container. Let the frog cool off for a while. Best of luck!
Genuinely don't think it's possible for a dwarf frog to kill a pleco or a snail. I am nearly certain you didn't have a dwarf frog, but a clawed frog. Bettas at the best of times are not fast but there's no way a goofy thing like an ADF is killing one.
I all of the sudden I have a translucent looking drawf frog Is it normal ???
Did it shed? You shouldn't be able to see its internal organs. If you can, then it has a problem. If it's just a color change, it's probably not a big deal. Good luck!
