Help on the Way: The Archetype of the Assisting Force – with David Richo PhD
She backs me up.
He stands up for me.
She believes in me.
They are at my side.
He has my best interests at heart.
These are references to a necessary and needed character on our human journey, the ally, the reliable companion, the assisting force. In every heroic journey story the hero or heroine requires a trustworthy companion to fulfill his/her/their destiny. The assisting force is often depicted as a sidekick, an aide, a wise advisor, a spirit guide. It can also be an elixir, a magic article, an animal, a wish-fulfilling gem. Some of the assisting forces are visible and some are invisible as we shall see.
Carl Jung said that we cannot individuate on Everest, that is, alone. The archetype of the ally is necessary if we are ever to be our full selves. Martin Buber, in The Knowledge of Man, beautifully describes this: “A person wishes to be confirmed in his being by another person…. It is from one human being to another that the heavenly bread of self-being is passed.”
David Richo PhD, MFT, is a psychotherapist, teacher, workshop leader, and writer who works in Santa Barbara and San Francisco California. He combines Jungian, poetic, and mythic perspectives in his work with the intention of integrating the psychological and the spiritual. His books and workshops include attention to Buddhist and Christian spiritual practices.

Some shadows are more insidious and more difficult to see than others. I’m a Jungian, and I’m holding my nose and voting for Trump in 2024. If you’re truly interested in the integration of opposites, you should have been regularly following both liberal and conservative news over the past decade to see how corrupt the institutions have become - and particularly the Left. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The trickster is a “consciousness” often designed by the cumulative thoughts of everybody alive. So a person who “channels” the consciousness can [be conscious] (of it) & can also be unconscious with it . The latter is considered the version that possesses people.

Yes. According to Swami Vivekananda, the empirical ego must learn through meditation and non-attachment to hear the voice of the Transcendental Self, operating beyond the domain of waking, dreaming, and dreamless sleep, at the fourth (Turyia) place of the visionary seer, seated in the Absolute, above the world of appearances. Seekers must learn to hear the voice of the Transcendental Self from the authentic voice of Atman within themselves and in the exalted atmosphere overhead. The One Consciousness can be investigated in the fourth (Turyia) realm of silence. Outside the margins of our waking, dreaming, and dreamless mind is a fourth continuum: a fourth state of Bliss (Ananda) above our empirical reality, a superconsciousness that has its own peculiar wisdom and that we cannot fully understand from a purely empirical standpoint. We need techniques to gain access to the Higher Self. The fourth level of the Transcendental Self can be conveyed by way of story, dream, and synchronicity. In this book, I call on Vivekananda’s theoretical explication of the Higher Self to illuminate the importance of the nature of the superconscious. This higher model of the Supreme Self was Vivekananda’s mission to communicate to the West.

Great video, but I would respectfully submit, that it is the American Two Party System, captured by corporations, that is the true Tickster spirit. Trump, by himself, is actually not much of a "Trickster," because he is too obvious and transparent. Even though he is an entertainer, and close to a "shock jock," or irreverent, "politically incorrect" comedian, which appears to be trickster-like on a superficial level, he lies/exaggerates so much, all the time, that he is almost admitting that he lies. He manifests The Fool archetype, but certainly doesn't "disguise himself as someone very lowly." I don't think anyone would describe him as cunning. Obama is a better example of a Trickster, because he won a Nobel Peace Prize, and yet increased the amount of drone strikes and covert acts of aggression, killing more civillians through "collateral damage" than Trump did. (Please see "Dirty Wars" and "The Assasination Complex" by Jeremy Scahill.) Obama also arrested more whistle blowers than Trump, punishing champions of government transparency. Furthermore, Obama tricked the country into thinking he would hold Wall Street responsible for the financial crisis, but Wall Street were major donors to his campaign, and in return Obama didn't even reinstate the Glass-Steagal Act, the separation of the commercial and investment banking sectors. ("Despite all these regulations, Dodd-Frank never goes as far as Glass-Steagall did in separating commercial and investment banking. The closest it gets is the so-called Volcker Rule, proposed by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, which bans banks from risky speculative trading with federally-insured money.") The repeal of the act in 1999, was a major cause of the 2008 Financial Crisis and why Canada fared so much better through its aftermath than the U.S. did. (Canada has much stronger regulations of their finance industry.) Obama could have bailed out home owners directly by paying off their mortgages, this still would have prevented the "Too Big To Fail" banks from collapsing, but instead he let them lose their homes to bank foreclosures, choosing to abandon home owners and bail out the predatory banks directly. Similarly, George Bush literally tricked the country into an illegal War with Iraq, unleashed chaos and torture, and is responsible for far more death, destruction and human misery, than Trump ever was, but somehow the media has now rehabilitated him, simply because he declared himself to be anti-Trump, (a true trickster move, to declare oneself to be "anti-trickster.") Bush and Obama both represent Trickster energy much more so than Trump, in that they birthed him, by creating the conditions that could cause him to be elected. Obama and Bush are the unconcious and dangerous aspect, and Trump brought the energy to a concious, less dangerous level, by being so vaudevillian and providing a protest vote release for all the pent up despair and anger working class Americans have for the American upper class. Imagine if the working and middle class people who voted for Bernie Sanders, were not separated from the people in their same economic class, who voted for Trump, by media manufactured "Culture Wars" and an over-emphasis on "Identity Politics" magnifying their differences, and undermining their class solidarity? There could be meaningful political reform, instead of the illusion of choice, offered by the corporate captured two party system, that divides and conquers the 90 percent. Remember that Bill and Hillary Clinton attended Donald and Melania Trump's wedding. They belong to the same 1 percent ruling class and both work for their own class interests. The illusion that they are substantially different, or that Obama and Bush are different in any meaningful way, is the ultimate Trick. (For an excellent book on Trickster mythology, please see "Tickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth and Art" by Lewis Hyde. :) )

I am a 40y.o. Sixth generation ,Caucasian American from Eastern Europe decent . I grew up in northern N.J. , in a middle class town . The bordering townships consist of Patterson NJ ( one of the poorest in the country) and Franklin Lakes ( one of the wealthiest in the country ). I've lived in cities that include Montreal( Canada ), Manhattan (NY) , Portu (Portugal) and Charleston (SC). My formal education and focus of subject in history and phycology is hardly worth mentioning in comparison to my true erudition which is being a well traveled human being . I'm a social extrovert and a analytical introvert . And if I may weigh in on this conversation I must say, in my experience their is no such thing as racism, only classism . The larger the gap in "perceived " wealth , the larger the disconnect between people. All cultures through out all of history practice this and nobody should feel guilt or humility for what people in the past did. Nor does anyone have to carry the burden of correcting the historical timeline. All people have to do, is stop perpetuating historical practices and stop being awkwardly over polite in present time. Are you a human ? Than just be to others as you would be to people in your personal circle of family and friends. Classism does not belong to any specific race . It exists in all cultures. One example of this is represented in Geisha girls. The traditional reason why Japanese woman ware white foundation makeup is because in ancient times , the lighter the skin you had , the higher the class you were. If you had dark skin, it was because you were tan from working in the rice fields. My point is ,racism spawns from classism , it just becomes racism when a inner culture tries to put an identifier on it. The percentage of Americans that don't have driver license is something like 35% and something close to half Americans never leave the state they were born in, not even for a quick two week vacation. So basically everyone gets their information from Fox News and their crazy neighbor. The only way this will ever stop is if people take more of an interest o find out things for themselves . That being said , the U.S. does have a serious incarceration count per capita as well as a ridiculous release policy. I hear the same story all the time. A young non violent , first time offender gets in trouble for just being a stupid kid and than the probation system fences them in a toxic environment , stunting personal growth , and creating negative disintegration.
