Electrics at the Dragon 2024 Summary - 4K
I think this is the main biggest reason I refuse to convert to an electric car. I know even if they don't have my octane, a slightly higher octane gas will still run without issue in my car. It's actually more expensive too if you're not charging at home. $35 in my forte for about 400mile range but these cars could cost about the same or more for a little over half that range. I have nothing against people that like ev cars but there are so many steps to getting things to just work properly especially on long distance trips i just can't see the reliability as a main vehicle
I get what you are saying, but as a EV owner let me dispel some of your anxiety (and do not take this as me trying to convince you). If you live in a house, be it a single family home or a duplex, and can install a level 2 charger at home, it will save you a lot of money on fuel. And every day will come out to a fully fueled vehicle. Also with a EV, you do not have all the other maintenance you have with a Gas car. No Oil changes, no Oil filters, no Transmission fluid, No alternators going bad, and so on. All you have is Break pads, Break fluid, Tires and Wiper blades (all same as a gas car). As for long trips, in most of the newer EV's you can get from 260 miles - 350 miles on a full charge. There are plenty of apps to show you where charging stations are along the route you are taking. Cost to charge is lower than Gas (right now). You are saying it would take you $35 to fill your tank, and it would take me about $18 to fill mine, but yes you are getting more range than me. The biggest difference is the amount of time it takes. Filling a car with Gas takes about 5 min, while charging can take between 30 - 90 min to fill up. This bring us to your final statement, "i just can't see the reliability as a main vehicle". And you might be right here, but you have to look at how often do you take long trips, where you drive your car on the trip. If you mainly stay within 100 miles of your house and only go on long trips once a year, then an EV would be a reliable main car. If you go on long trips 1-2 time a month in your car, then a Gas car would be better suited to your needs. Also back to my first statement, if you live in an apartment building or condo where you do not have the ability to install a level 2 charger at home, then again a Gas car would be better for you. Hope this helps.
I understand what you're saying and things will start to get better with everyone going to the NACS standard as well as plug and charge technology. It's not always easy being an early adopter. Once bridge technology is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV). That allows you to take advantage of cheaper charging (see easy way to compare: th-cam.com/video/OEcttZPdG14/w-d-xo.html) and still maintain the ability to use gas for road trips. That does introduce some complexity and means you still have to do ICE maintenance like oil changes, belts, hoses, spark plugs, etc.
This is everything I wanted to know about the key fob, Thanks!
Yay!
Good to see you back
Good to see you posting again. I also hope to see Aptera succeed. Per PlugShare, the RAN site in south Lansing is working for non-Rivian cars. This also has the achievement of being the fist NEVI site to go live in Michigan. Re OCPP, be sure that is hardware compliance with the local EVSE itself. The JuiceBox has OCPP through servers that the local equipment connected to with a proprietary method. One thing I am looking forward to is the Pilot just west of Port Huron going live. Everything is in place, and we are just waiting on the utility.
I went to Tractor supply and bought a 5/8" pin with large handle and large pin hole for $6.99. I then bought a Master lock with small shank to fit the large hole on the hitch pin. It fits perfectly inside the cubby hole. I even installed the permanent 6 inch chain links to the safety hooks.
Happy New Year to you and yours and wishing you the best for 2025.
Thanks for the well wishes. Happy New Year to you too!
Please can we have the detailed video of the performance brake part instead of the Timelapse?
should change oil every 6-12 months coz volts and all eco tech 1.4's have an issue where their pcv valve diaphram in the valve cover gasket breaks and lets in outside air to the crank case and will accumulate humidity and water down oil over long periods of time.
What a beautiful clearly explained video
Airport Uber drivers. Bunch of Bangladesh street squatters.
This is why u had to put the key fob behind the cup holder. “Once inside, power up Model Y by pressing the brake pedal within two minutes of pressing the unlock button on the key fob (see Starting and Powering Off). If you wait longer than two minutes, you must press the unlock button again, or place the key fob near the card reader located behind the cup holders on the center console. When your key fob is detected, the two minute authentication period restarts.”
Thanks for the video. I've been researching (obsessing) to pick the right EVSE, and this unit checks all the boxes for what I would like to spend my money on: durability, portability (don't own my home), maintenance access. As with all products, I kept running into complaints, but the fires that customers experienced from Grizzl-e chargers a few years ago almost scared me off. There's a potential for failure in anything, but glad they improved QC.
opening the frunk is very annoying with the app so i'd love something like this since i use the frunk around 10x more often than i do the rear
Great Video. Thanks so much for posting. Would you be able to post the full video of time elapse at the end of the Performance Caliper Service? That would be helpful for all MY owners. Thanks.

They beat me to the punch SOB
I like the idea of battery power BUT. The ELCO 4 deep cycle batteries to run my small pontoon with ELCO's 20 outboard does not work out well. I followed all directions and had their expert come visit to help with set up. The expensive batteries near $500 each , have so far given me only a year of power recharging overnight after each use for only 6 outings of less than an hour each. Now the boat runs out of a full charge after about 30 minutes operation and creeps back to the dock. I am disgusted. I don't mind spending money for what works, but if it does not work well or long , it is worse than discouraging. I cannot recommend the ELCO so battery powered outboard nor the batteries themselves, supposed deep cycle marine batteries. I am not sure I am up to refitting it all with trying a Lithium battery as they can also be quite dangerous, overheating. The sales and marketing makes it all look so capable and positive but the real life experience is disappointing. I am ready to go back to getting a gas engine. Or give up boating.
I think using phone is way more convenient & works all the time. Totally waste of 150 bucks
FWIW, I have not bought one yet either. My phone does lag sometimes though.
@@0e-michigan Give full location permission, remove battery optimisation and keep it running in the background. Works all the time
It doesn't always work. I have android and iphone, the iphone has more connection issues in general so i've kind of switched to Android to avoid getting locked out. I have 3 Teslas and phone unlocking works fine but at times it doesn't. Also this fob is super useful for opening the frunk remotely.
surprised you dont lube the clip and pins
YaY left mitten! Time to charging is so weird, it punishes lower cost slower charging EVS
I electrified my Quest in 2015 with a mid-drive and wired the lighting harness myself. My doing it gave me the idea that Elon Musk used to design the Cybertruck's new, lighter wiring harness.
hey brotha. I have a 2016 Model S P90D with 90,313 miles. Randomly yesterday I heard a squealing kind of sound. Come to find out it’s my front left…I took it to Tesla to see how much it costs for front brake pads and they’re $305 so I was going to buy them. But the Tesla service advisor at first was like you never really have to replace the pads due to regen brakes. But im curious, would the dirty rotors cause that? I guess what im asking is do you think my pads are still good? What would cause that squealing kind of sound? Thanks
Thank you for the info. The Highlander PS kindness is always free. Use it exercise it daily.😊
The beard looks quite jolly Karl! Using the latest community charger via multiple adapters is a good present as well. You are definitely on the good list of informative videos!
Haha, yeah the beard is getting there. I won't need a fake one for sure. In the Santa spirit, I do enjoy helping people and making them happy. One of Santa's elves keeps him informed about office parties, so you never know where he'll drop in out of the chimney. :-D
Thanks for this video - very detailed and helpful! Questions: were you able to find out if the Key fob needs to be placed on the center console area to drive the car?
Thanks for the note. No, the key fob did not have to be placed on the center console. With a good battery (it uses the standard CR2032 button battery that has to be replace periodically...maybe once every 1-2 years), it works from just about anywhere in the car.
Same layout as the ones in Farragut (Knoxville) TN that I've used with my Rivian and Experia... great trailer-friendly layout, covered, excellent amenties (a Denney's at the Farragut one). These are stations Done Right (tm).
Use of the tricycle design, points to a degree of ignorance that must be pointed out. ALL trikes are made of fail -
Great video.
Nice presentation and great discussion questions!
20:35 I wish bicycle emissions would count human caloric consumption, in which case e-bikes win.
The data for this is not his responsibility, of course, but for my electric motorcycle streamlining project, I’ll have to show an estimate for electric motorcycles unfaired and then faired. And obviously light rail or equivalent mass transit wins, but there’s always a use case for more flexibility.
He is downplaying the advantages of electric powertrains over human efficiency at propulsion. I wish bicycle enthusiasts would admit that exercise is virtuous but mostly good for its own sake or as a backup.
Fantastic presentation....Paul's been a good friend for many years, and I consider him a bit of a mentor to my regarding all things EV.
Paul is definitely an inspiration regarding transportation efficiency. I was pleased we could could collaborate on the recording.
Oh, this is something I’ve wondered about! Velomobiles would be a lot more useful without having to sweat inside them, and also carry a nontrivial load. I’m queuing up the video and PDF now.
Very cool. I like what he has done. I might have gone with a mid-drive motor for better hill climbing power. Though that would have not allowed for the regen.
He definitely wanted regen as a feature so there are compromises as with any engineering design.
10/8/24 Update - the mirrors are on sale at Amazon for <$22 at the time of this posting. amzn.to/4h7GNs6
Might need to do it on my concours first.
That's the exact trip I want to do with my etron. Good to know lots of charging optiona
I'd say only people with some mechanical background should do brake jobs. By that, i don't mean the instructor here, he knows his stuff.
I found the free charger at the McDonald's in Port Clinton, Ohio on PlugShare. While charging,I walked in to the restaurant and bought a hamburger and fries, but I forgot to thank the staff for the free power.
A lot of dumb chargers can also be made smart with third party management systems.
The question is: Is that desirable? Networking, which helping with issues like people overstaying their charging session, does introduce a level of complexity that often leads to the chargers not being available because of network issues.
@@0e-michigan that really depends on its purpose. Not everything needs to be fully public and available to everyone some restrictions are sometimes needed. I used to charge on a clippercreek unit with a keypad. That worked great the guest has a code that changes frequently similar to a bathroom code.
Have on of thes near me. It's free so needing the app is complete stupidity.
The ones I've seen are only free for one hour and paid after that. Even free ChargePoint stations require a ChargePoint account. I do try to convince charging hosts who don't plan to collect funds for charging to go with a non networked charger. They're so much more reliable without a network.
Maybe you have not run in to it yet. But also check that the right plug is docked in the right charger. Some people will put cord 1 in charger 2 by mistake. I always check the cord I'm trying to use is connected to the charger I'm trying to use.
I think that's exactly what the problem was.
They don't have this problem in Europe: you have to bring your own cord
Another one up in Saginaw. Not pull through, but has canopy. Just opened last week.
Yeah baby! & they have IHOP to blueberry pancake your way through a charging session. Thx for the video. Was great to see.
I find it a bit easier to scan the QR code on the "charger" from within the Shell Recharge app. Then you don’t need to dig around in the map and try and sort through to select the right charger from the list.
Very informative😊 the Highlander
9-21-2024 Update - if anyone is still in the market for one of these, Amazon has a 10% off deal right now. amzn.to/47D8O6c
Does it automatically limit itself to 12 amps when using the 5-15 adapter? I don’t want to fiddle with the app for that single purpose nor open it up every time to change the dip switches. I know other dual voltage EVSEs do automatically limit themselves to 12 amps because they can swap out the plugs and not rely on adapters. The manual is not clear on this issue. I’m looking for a robust dual voltage EVSE for my new Polestar 2 (it doesn’t come with one).
@@Ovationhabs No, I'm afraid it doesn't. The Grizzl-E knows nothing about adapters because they're dumb adapters. Having said that, I noticed that If you hook it to 120V power, it *will* have a maximum amp level...I can't recall if it's 15A or 20A. I tried hooking my TT-30 adapter to it and noticed that I can't take advantage of the 30A (24A at 80%) because the maximum current at 120V was (likely) 20A. If you want the capability for the charger to set the maximum current based on the adapter, you can either go to the J+ Booster or a Tesla mobile cable. If you're in North America, you'll need a NACS to J1772 adapter for the time being. I still carry the latter option on my Zero until the Gen1 Tesla cable craps out. The downside to the Tesla option is that the current Gen 2 UMC only goes up to 32A. jplusbooster.com/
@@0e-michigan Thank you for the info. I went with the J+ Booster 2 with a good price on recent Prime Day sale.
You have confirmed that the Shell chargers are amoung the most complicated to use. How does this help pepole go electric? Sense Shell is a gas company, I think that is what they want to do, discourge EV use.
FWIW, Shell is at least making the transition to electric to keep their options open. They bought the technology from Greenlots, so I'm not sure these particular chargers are a Shell design. But yes, they are a bit wonky which is part of the reason I made the video. They do work and the 1 hour for free is kind of a nice perk at Michigan Meijer stores.
