Clipless vs Flat Pedals - Which is Better? A Novice Rider's Answer.
Welcome!
First of all, sorry about the audio! Somehow the upload process only produced left side audio. Please watch in Mono if possible. I'm trying to resolve the issue.
I have been on Clipless Pedals for a year now, and I figured I would talk about the pros and cons of each. Maybe I can help you decide which pedal to choose.
As the title says... this is the opinnion of a novice rider. I'm in my late fourties, and the learning curve was a little steeper than if your younger. I'm comforable on them now and I feel I can give my input.
I will also have a video coming out with some tips for learning clipless pedals if you do decide to go that route. Just subscribe and you won't miss it when it comes out!
Keep Shredding!!!

German Trail Ratings are Wrong! - MTB Trail Rating Debacle #mtb #emtb #mtbtrails
มุมมอง 4521 วันที่ผ่านมา
So this week I'm just ranting about trail ratings. It seems everywhere I ride outside Germany, trails with the same ratings are much more difficult. You may think it is not a big deal, but it really is. I believe it can lead to a false sense of skill and cause injuries for German riders that are traveling riding outside of Germany for the first time. I mean, there is nothing an old man with a t...

I was finally able to get out to Bad Orb and ride the flow trails! This is a raw video of the only run down Haseltal Trail I made today. It started to really rain when we got to the bottom. I took it kinda easy and slow to feel the trail out and not completely lose my riding buddies. I have to say this was probably my favorite trail of the day, but I'll cover that in a future video. ;-) For now...

A quick, short raw video of the Löwenbrau Trail out in the Fürther Stadtwald. This trail is a wee bit rooty in places and really good fun when it's dry. I'm headed out to a local bike spot tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get ...

So here it is! My review of the 160 millimeter cranks from AliExpress! Will they kill you!?!? When I made the plan to build this Dartmoor Primal I decided to try some shorter cranks, as they are all the rage, I actually picked up two sets of these. One in 160 mm and the other in 155 mm. It was apparent quite quickly that the 155 mm were a little too short, but the 160 mm cranks are the bomb! I ...

A raw video of the Canyon Trail in the Fürther Stadtwald. This trail is a real blast on any bike. There are chicken lines around pretty much every feature, so the trail can be ridden by beginners. If the trail was a little longer, I would put it in the running for one of the best Group Ride trails in Germany. It is a blast running lap after lap of the trail though. I say at the beginning of the...

A POV run down the Moggerla Trail on the Dartmoor Primal I built up as a mullet. This trail was built and is maintained by the folks at Trailworks Fürth. The trail is a little flat at the top, but gets rolling a little as you progress down the hill. As with all of the trails legalized in the Stadtwald, this one is quite short. Luckily, all the trails also have very short climbs to get back up a...

      I thought that was just me ha ha I migrated from road/track to mtb recently. Clipped in was too much for me on downhill runs. Flat just felt wrong. Ended up with a set of very concave pedals, both front-rear and L-R concave. It's actually hard to get my foot off sometimes. Shimano does a set with SPD one side, flat the other. I've considered drilling them for pins on the flat side, but there hasn't been a rainy enough day. This infuriates trackies by the way - they can see the logic behind it, but "you're not using the lightest pedal available?? And you're riding your track bike TO the track??" I swear wearing lycra leads to brain damage. One of these days I'll let them know I'm also running tubeless and take a gravel track to get there.

    • @MTB4TH
      @MTB4TH 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No, not just you. That uneasy feeling when pointed downhill clipped in is just human. It goes away with time and experience though. Just keep shredding and it'll get better. No need to drill the Shimano combi pedals. There are a lot of companies that offer combination/hybrid pedals with SPD. Some companies even do SPD better than Shimano.

    This is by no means just a Germany thing, I rather think it's a mountain-country vs flat-country thing. Or even mountain-region vs. flat-region. Some blue trails in western Norway might be classified as black if they were located in eastern Sweden. Is this good? No - but kind of inevitable, else some regions would have only green and blue trails or other regions would have only black trails! Every MTB rider must know that they need to adjust their expectation to the local difficulty baseline.

    • @MTB4TH
      @MTB4TH 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I see your point, although I have noticed that the trails are rated more difficult than they are in all areas of Germany that I've ridden. Regardless of if the trails are located in a flat(ish) or mountainous area.

  • @Titot182

    Watching this video makes me want to rebuild my primal frame in the garage loft, but that's an aside. I splashed out £35 for the BB, 155mm goldix and 28T round cassette to fit on my wife's nukeproof mega build - It's a 290, but she preferred a mullet, and hence, we ran into ground clearance issues with the 175mm shimano cranks that we ported over onto the new frame. Paired with a 28T oval, she's now able to spin up technical rooty climbs without bottoming out the crank or catching it on roots. The plus side is that she doesn't feel as fatigued on climbs, despite losing the leverage, with her only being 5'9 and 29" inside leg, purely because she can spin up. I quite enjoyed using it (same height) for a local trail loop too and will be contemplating buying a set of 160mm cranks without the BB or chain ring, if I can source a locally made 28T oval for my nukeproof giga. Build quality I would say is on par with Shimano's deore. Fininishing and machining on the goldix is as good as any other far-eastern produced bike component and having the chromoly axle for strength will also mean we shouldn't run into fatigue/endurance issues if the spindle was aluminium, like on some other ali express parts (the 5DEV conterfeits, for example). Wife is 105kg kitted out, so we'll see how it holds out. The only bummer is that because it's an M18 preload cap, my wife's oil slick end cap from her SLX cranks couldn't go on. Sad times. As for the supplied chainring, I noticed it came in a snail branded package. I've used snail floating rotors on 2 of my bikes and they do the job reasonably well, so I don't have any reason to doubt its performance. Great purchase though for the price before you invest in pricier short cranks (unite components in the UK are £200 before you pair it up with a chain ring).

    • @MTB4TH
      @MTB4TH หลายเดือนก่อน

      I originally bought these cranks just to test shorter cranks and see if short cranks were as great as everyone was raving about. The plan was to scrap them or give them away after testing, but the way they're performing... I'm going to keep them a while longer. I also run a 28 tooth oval with the shorter cranks. With a little higher cadence I don't notice any power loss on ordinary climbs. Only when it gets really steep and technical do I miss the extra little bit of torque. Not a big deal though as I usually try to avoid those climbs because of my weak heart. Spinning is much easier for me. 😁 The chainring I got with mine was in a clear plastic bag in the box, with no branding at all. As I said in the video though, I only run ovals and haven't tested it. If you decide to get the 160 millimeter cranks for yourself, let me know how both crank sets perform over time. I'll be hitting some bigger drops and features with mine and plan on putting out a follow up review in January.

      Hi Scott. I can't say I have any more of a problem with altitude than before the heart attack. I am more cautious at altitude though and pay more attention to what my body "says." I have noticed it takes a little longer to acclimate to the altitude. I've found eating more frequently and more fluid intake to help a lot. Sorry I haven't posted any more videos yet. Scripts are written but I haven't had the time and energy to record and edit yet. Dealing with a few non-heart related issues. Hoping to get a video of my initial training plan up soon. Hope I was able to help. If you have any more questions you can comment here or hit me up on Instagram (@bigalilaus). Respectfully, Dave
