Patrice Parent - Stuff My Dad Knows
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 ก.ค. 2013
I learned to do a lot of stuff following my dad around when I was young, I couldn't get enough. Fast forward 50 years or so, and now my 3 sons, are asking me "How come you know how to do that? Why didn't you teach that to us?". My answer: you were too busy! In this day and age following your dad (or mom...) around to learn stuff has been superseded by sport practices, away games or tournaments and general over-scheduling! So here is my attempt to live with the times and make my projects available to my sons and anybody finding this useful. But most importantly - they are available when you're ready - not when the project has to get done. Via the magic of TH-cam, I'm documenting the projects that need to be done around my house. We'll do general maintenance, build furniture, some gardening, renovate an in-law apartment, we may even brew a beer or two! If you're ready let's go!

thank you..
Could you have just laid the club on the flat board, board would have a protractor to measure the one angle, zero a Wixey on the board then put it on the club face to measure the other angle.
If you can maintain that 90 degree angle and keep the grooves parallel to the base, while measuring the loft and lie, I suppose you can. But I would question the precision you're getting. Try measuring the same club 3 time in a row and see the variability of your measurements. You need to clamp the club down to make sure you have accurate results (that you can repeat).
great advice, I learnt more about bulkheads from you in 4.22 than I did via the information provided by the manufactures on amazon or ebay
Glad I could help!
Great design
Awesome
Great and useful video. Looking to setup my own home Dutch bucket system for sweet peppers & tomatoes, thanks for the great information 👍
Thanks! Good luck, and have fun.
Thanks bro!
Glad I could help.
I appreciate this video. My 60 degree wedge I got has a TON of this crap on it
Just curious if you wanted to sell it lol.
Sorry mate.
Same problem here. Wonder if Callaway is even aware of this problem?
Callaway, Taylor Made... who ever has a raw face has to put a protection on it, given all the grooves and micro-grooves the adhesive has to be thicker to flow into each of those grooves to protect them from rusting. Once that has happen and the wedge has been sitting on a shelve for any period of time, that adhesive will dry up a bit and will be more or less difficult to remove. Not sure there's anything the companies can do about it. It's up to us to realize that and clean it off. That's why I made the video, to help fellow golfers who have the same issue! Cheers.
Hi Patrice. I like your laid back style of making videos. Perhaps consider (instead of Kratky, DWC & flood & drain) trying the rain gutter grow system using hydroponic nutrient. No need to recirculate, no need for air pumps & (provided you keep the roots out of the rain gutter) no need to adjust the pH. Use your downspouts instead of an open rain gutter, use a float valve to set the nutrient level in the downspout & use geotech fabric to prevent the roots getting into the channel. Use coco coir with perlite as your aggregate. You can even use standard potting mix instead if you want (use with hydroponic nutrient for maximum yield). I don't think you will go back to any of the above systems after you have tried the RGGS.
I have seen this on Hoocho, I'll giv eit a go! Thanks
@@stuffmydadknows Thanks for your reply. You can put the float in one of your kitty litter containers, then just adjust the height of the kitty container up or down to match the level you want in your rain gutters. This is easier than installing the float in the end of the rain gutter itself. Use half inch irrigation tube (or half inch garden hose which is often easier to bend etc) to connect multiple rain gutters together so you only need a single float valve (Hoocho hasn't learned this yet). Install a filter before the float valve so it does not clog up with algae or any undissolved nutrient. Hoocho uses a net cup (or wicking rope) which hangs into the rain gutter for wicking, but I prefer using a microfibre cleaning cloth. Make sure it is polyester/polyamide as this does not rot like cotton does. I push the centre of the cloth through the hole in the bottom of the pot, spreading the ends out along the inside bottom surface of the pot. This helps to prevent roots getting into the rain gutter. The polyester cloths last for many years. Just pull the roots off between grows (or put them in the washing machine). You can test the wicking ability of various cloths by pegging one end onto the lip of a bucket & carefully adding 2 inches of water in the bucket. Observe how far the water wicks up the cloth an hour later. I've bought the polyester wicking rope from Hydroland (Hoocho) & most microfibre cloths beat it hands down. Big plusses are that you no longer need to adjust the pH of the nutrient as the grow goes on & no more emptying out the nutrient reservoir every couple of weeks. Another plus is that the acids the plant roots secrete creates a mico-environment that suits the roots without any recirculated nutrient washing them away. This is one of the main reasons why wicking rain gutter grow systems work so well. Just remember that wicking only works to 400mm max, so no point in having your aggregate any higher than that.
I am super impressed with your idea of managing liquid level in Kratky buckets and going to try this out soon. One question though, how do you deal with super concentrated left over nutrient in the bucket when the level drops down to that preset level ? Do you flush periodically and start all over again ?
Before you build it, check this video out: th-cam.com/video/CVWy7ROMRSY/w-d-xo.html .I updated the design a bit. The ball was tool low in my first attempt, it just needed a spacer! In a Kratky the nutrients are absorbed by the plants, so it never really gets super concentrated, if something the nutrient solution is getting less concentrated with time... that's actually the whole Kratky concept to have a container large enough to just let it be for the whole plant cycle. But you need more space to accomodate a large container. So having smaller container and allow it to re-fill makes a lot of sense for many of us. The nutrient solution you put in should be made according to the instructions that come with it (whatever you use, I use Masterblend). You should never make the solution more concentrated expecting it to dilute when it reaches the plants. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Short and sweet
This video is spot-on. There is protective film on the club that needs to come off
How tight should you make the bulkhead fitting when you’re screwing it on? Should it only be hand tight?
I use a pair of slip joint pliers to just give it a little bit more than hand tight. Not too much because it's plastic after all, but I like to compress the rubber washer a little bit, have it bulge a little when you look at it. Hope this helps.
No more whistling!!!😂😂
Will stringing the peppers prevent them from growing towards the sun? My plants tends to always grow towards the sun. The left side of my balcony gets the morning sun and the right side the evening sun, so they "lean" towards those sides. Maybe I should just try stringing them up when I pot them up to their final pot size 🤔Anyways, hope your tomatoes snap back and end up looking like last year 🤞
They need to build up a main trunk that will be strong enough for the peppers they'll bare. The leaves will still lean toward the sun!
@@stuffmydadknows Aha. Thanks for the information. I guess I'll skip stringing them and hope the wind I get on the balcony will give them a sturdy enough trunk, and then just keep rotating the pots to prevent the from only growing towards the sun 🤔
Wash hydroton in hydrogen peroxide only. it's hard to rince bleach out of hydroton. Wash & rince again. Or throw away.
Thanks!
Peppers are indeed looking nice. Sad to hear the tomatoes aren't doing too well. Can't wait for the video about that.
Video coming Wednesday! Thanks.
thanks for making this video!
Glad you liked it!
Good review. I have plenty of the stakes and was looking into these clips. Temu has them for less money but you need to wait and returns are iffy so I went with Amazon. What I like about the Amazon group is they have butt connectors to join two stakes to make them longer. Happy gardening.
I had the same issues with plenty of stakes left and I got more clips and replaced my Tomato Cages: th-cam.com/video/vX-j9IZiOhg/w-d-xo.html Thanks!
Where did you purchase those buckets from?
These buckets are a by-product of having cats... their litter comes in these. I'm recycling these buckets for just about anything...
Wood was nicer.
They were just too massive... I should have rip them at 7/8 or 1", no more... they are at least 1/2" too thick. We'll see what happens next year!
with minor modification you could turn the old cages into a nice trellis with a bench under it and a nice vining plant
They will be, no worries!
I didn't see any replacement. I didn't listen to the middle and waited for the end but... where is the change.
I replaces the cages that I built in this video: th-cam.com/video/PFAsJm_ddBE/w-d-xo.html
oh.. you replaced it WITH trash. i thought you were replacing the trash. to me an erector set of cheap bamboo twigs is more of an eyesore than actual wood. why not just paint the wood green.. or white? i think what you really need is lines above the bed that you can "pull" the plants up to, each on their own clips.. but what do i know, i just grow weed while she does the veggies and flowers.
We'll see what happens! We tend to rotate our vegetable from bed to bed every year, that's why I'm not doing a more permanent structure in any of the beds. I think I overbuilt the wooden cages, they are too bulky. At the end of the season I'll re-evaluate the situation and adjust for next season. Cheers.
I am a fan of how you grow because i grow just like you... down to the same buckets lol. Just wanted to suggest one thing. When the plants with the net pots have roots touching the water I would lower the water level below the net pot at least a inch or 2. It helps avoid root rot and gives the roots more oxygen.
I'll give it a try. I have a new video coming out soon with an automatic bucket filler, so it'll be real easy to lower the water level. But that will happen is a few weeks as they are still very small... The temperature is still low at night (nothing to damage the plants), since peppers like heat, they are growing really slow. Thanks
Do you have to glue it ?
Depends entirely on your application. If you applicationr has a disaster waiting to happend if there's a leak, fish die, plants die, basement floods... the yes glue it. These in the video are abs, so make sure to use the proper cement for what you're glueing. In my application I don't glue them because they are responsible for drainage and do not carry any pressure. And, not to be ignored, I change my mind a lot on the layout of my systems, so not glueing them allows me to re-use them. Make sense?

Will the wire brush affect the tiny, micro grooves on the face?
The wires on the brush are fairly soft (thin) so it didn't affect the micro grooves. But I can imagine that if I used a stiffer bristle with a coarser wire it could affect the micro grooves. But if you want to be real sure you can use a brass bristle brush which is softer than the steel.
Looking good! Will you leave it as is or paint it white as well?
It will be painted white, but that won't happen for a little while. Pressure treated lumber has to dry out before you paint it.
Bravo Patrice! Great that you're doing this on YT!
Merci Denis! The kids dared me to do it 2 years ago... I thought after 2 years, it was time to use all my social media platform to spread the news.
Have seen the new kitty litter bucket? They are gray and not yellow. I plan to use them in the same setup as you.
I have seen the new bucket, I just got one from Chewy... They seem more opaque than the yellow, so no need to paint the bucket!
Beautiful! I noticed the tighter spacing but you got me with the slightly wider pickets!
A big reason why you didn't notice the wider pickets is because I kept the height of the tip (triangle) the same, I change the angle instead. If the tip was kept at the same angle, it would be a taller tip and you would have noticed.
Love how you iterate on the system each year. Will be interesting to see how this and the dutch buckets works out this year 👍
I've used this DWC a few years back and it worked well. I'm always looking to optimize my harvest and minimize my costs. I'm a thinkerer so this is also fun!
great video. why didn't you use a drip system instead of flooding the bucket with water? just curious.
That's called a Dutch Bucket and I did that in this video: th-cam.com/video/Pt1pAv3bkXk/w-d-xo.html because I was adding more grow buckets and my reservoir wasn't big enough to do Ebb & Flow. The Ebb & Flow was the system I used 2 seasons ago, last year I used an Dutch Bucket (the video in the comment) and I'll be using it this year as well (the video is coming this week). The Ebb & Flow worked really well it's just limited by the reservoir, in my case a 32 gallon trash can.
@@stuffmydadknows thank you for your quick reply
@@bbulliard You Bet!
Looks like you could put a bell siphon in there & run it as a flood & drain where the pump never stops, giving the pump longer life span. I'm planning on doing something called a dual route zone with rocks in the bottom half, soil in the top half & burlap in between. This looks perfect because I don't have to have a drain bed. I can use the buckets together but individually.
I haven't experimented yet with bell siphons. Please get back and share your findings with your new system. Thanks!
I learned a lot about Bell siphons starting with this video. (How to Make a Bell Siphon & How Bell Siphons Work. Rob Bobs Aquaponics & Backyard Farm. He has several videos on Bell Siphons and on dual root zone. also showing his aquaponics system and other people's aquaponics systems. Thought you might be interested.
@@jeremyhula931 I actually watched many of his videos, he's a good ressource. That being said I don't beleive a bell siphon will work in this setup. The siphon will "suck" the nutrient solution at a much higher rate than the 1/2" PVC tubing will allow it to enter that bucket. If a bell siphon was going to be used in a setup like mine, I would make the tube linking all the buckets at least an inch in diameter, and probably more like 1.5" to allow the out flow of the grow buckets to keep up with the bell siphon. Also a consideration, bulkhead fittings of that size are not cheap, probably around $10 each, so the system becomes a bit more expensive... Bell siphons seem to work best in a larger grow bed where the solution is "waiting" to be siphoned out and doesn't have the restriction of traveling through a tube.
Wink wink. Lol. I like bigger plants.
Then that system should be great for you! Good luck and Thanks.
Awesome info sir, Cultivating kindness one seed at a time.🪴🪴🌶🌶🌱🌱👍👍
Thank you, glad I could help.
Great explanation. Greatly appreciated
Good job...thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant this is exactly what ive been looking for i can not wait to build one of these. I play soft forged blades they are a good 12 yrs old now so will defo need checking. Just a quick question does the taper on the shaft affect the reading at all.....im trying to picture in my mind how the fact that the shaft isnt dead cylindrical will affect loft? Will it make the club slighty out of plumb from the back board?
A taper shaft would affect the lie reading but not the loft. The block that rides on the aluminium rail will square the blade of the club (to the back board and allow you to adjust the grooves parallel to the bottom board) so your loft readings will be accurate. The lie will be affected by half of the taper angle... which is a very small number (if you can find it). Personally I would ignore it, as the comparison between each clubs (from the manufacturer specs) will tell you if something is out of wack. The lie tends to vary by half a degree between each iron (Callaway specs but I think this is pretty general) until you reach the wedges were PW and GW are the same. So if your lie isn't 1/2 a degree between each clubs you need to have that check. Cheers!
@@stuffmydadknows fantastic makes absolute sense now you have explained it thankyou 👍 and thanks for taking the time to reply much appreciated.
@@TheTraditionalGolfer Cheers!
That's a lot of tiny plants! 😍What medium is that? Is it soil?
We use Espoma Seed Starting Mix. We use this particular brand name because it's screened very well (no branches or chunks of anykind) and has Mycorrhizae which helps the seedlings absorb more nutrient and moisture. Here the link to get more info: amzn.to/3PsBhnN
@@stuffmydadknowsSounds really nice. Sadly I live in Sweden, so can't get that one. The stuff I get here usually has a bunch of tiny branches etc in it (even the seed starting mixes) 😔
@@PreatorRaszagal maybe make a small screen box that would allow you to screen the seeding mix to remove those branches... like this maybe: th-cam.com/video/Ml_IRnf5pig/w-d-xo.html this is not from me but that could help you remove branches and rocks. Or try different brands of seeding mix that are available to you and find one that works.
@@stuffmydadknows Sadly all of the brands I've tried over the years seem to have bigger pieces in "stuff" in them. I usually try sifting it with my hand, but making a screen like that would make it a lot easier hehe. Thanks for the tip 👍
Nice and simple system. Will be interesting to see the followup and a later update on how they worked out 👍
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ALUMINUM RAIL ? ISN'T THE BOARD FLAT ENOUGH?
If you go to 15:00 on the video, you'll see the block that's used to square the face is grooved on the bottom and it rides over the rail. That groove and aluminium rail keeps the block square so I can square the face.
I see thank you sir, keep the videos coming@@stuffmydadknows
I think I would do a custom rocket stove that feeds at an angle and has mesh bottom so the ash falls out and it gravity feeds the wood. Then use it to heat something with a large thermal mass like a water barrel. Cool setup and old houses did have a soot issues so not a surprise. It's premium but beeswax was used in a lot of places like churches as it doesn't produce soot that could damage stuff like relics.
Thanks for the suggestion. Soot is an issue but there are too many other drawback for this solution to work for me. Cheers!
@patriceparent-stuffmydadknows That's why I like rocket stoves as built right they burn clean on a lot cheaper materials. You can make it pretty small too.
