    IMO, POTA contains more of the true ORIGINAL spirit of field day than the FD we have today. POTA usually puts the operator out in the public eye and not in some secluded wooded area with air conditioned trailers far away from everyone. POTA also uses a minimum of equipment and therefore deploys extremely quickly which is an invaluable skill for emergency ops, vs an entire day of orchestrated setup like many clubs do on FD. I am very glad that we have POTA and can do it 365 days out of the year, not just one. 73

    Great presentation, but I'm confused.. how can a private repeater group consider that frequency private and run you off from it? No one owns the frequency. They could switch their repeater off if they don't want you using it, but can't forbid you from using that frequency.

    • @mikemcdonald5147
      @mikemcdonald5147 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah there's always the complaint that no one owns those frequencies so how can they do that. My only guess is they bought the equipment the repeater, duplexer, coax, antenna, possible tower, and are paying for the electricity used. So they get to control how much electricity you are using LOL :) Is it right>? not really but I kinda get it. It's a big cost to run a repeater and upkeep it so its only right to charge a small fee for the upkeep and power.

    I don't know any real ham who would waste their time to buy a license when they already have a better license than the best GMRS radio you could afford and playing by the rules only talks about 40 miles at best if you have a really high location for your repeat. And who are you going to talk to? What will you have in common besides the fact that you both bought your license. Are you that stupid or lonely that you need to basically go backwards to what is literally the CB RADIO

I don't see anything prohibiting it's use in the furtherance of a business(except banning advertising) but a business can no longer get a license and allow its employees to use it's license.

    Simplex repeaters are authorized on the 462 Main channels (15-22, "mobile, hand-held portable, repeater, base and fixed stations may transmit on these 8 channels"), and Part 95 repeaters have a height limit of 200ft before specific FAA and FCC approval is required. GMRS used to be Part 90(A), permitting part 90 radios. For a while, radios were being certified under part 90 and 95(E), but this has been discontinued by the FCC. Equipment already certified may continue to be used, but no new equipment will be certified.

  • @mikesradiorepair

    The following information is straight from the horses mouth (FCC). I have been dealing with them for a couple years now with interference problems on local GMRS repeaters and in that time have gotten to know some of the EB agents and EB attorney. Linking is NOT allowed in no way PERIOD. They told me they will clarify this more the next time the regs get updated. During their investigations in the area for GMRS and amateur radio interference complaints they contacted the local people that had linked GMRS repeaters and told them they had to remove the link because it is not allowed. Using old part 90 LMR radios is fine as long as it only programmed for GMRS frequencies. Their standpoint was the LMR radios technical standards exceed the GMRS technical standards. I even kept a few of the emails where they told me this so I had it in writing. On a side note, working with EB agent Albert Furlow and EB attorney Laura Smith has always been a pleasure. They have made several presentations at local club luncheons and a full fledged presentation with the FCC regional director and ARRL regional director last year. Mike KC3OSD WRCH578

    Very well done gents. I became licensed back 1994 and I’m a full UK licensed … G0… I had to then leave because of life but kept renewing my licence when required. Now I’ve just finished a dedicated ‘ shack ’ in the back garden / yard and will be going live in June 2024. SWL first because it’s changed so much with technology, I mean computers were still in their nappies / diapers then 🫣 CW always had a romantic appeal to myself and I’m going to do it. Recently I acquired a UK FIST Koch type tutor off a UK ham on eBay and will be using that along with other methods. Surprisingly because the exam back then was 12wpm the recognition was there but there was a tremendous brush up to do… the thing reminding myself is…it’s a hobby, not my job and I need to love it or it will get lost again and I’ll quit ( no I won’t ) Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed this and I’ve saved it to listen to again, maybe becoming a member later. Your approach and facility is nothing short of excellent… very well done Sirs.73. 💙 QRZ… G0 UVL ( UltraVioletLight 😉 )

    Would running power and using your water pipe sleeve affect the losses you measured over the different materials? I would think running more power increases the field around the transmission line, possibly having an effect on swr.

    How could one use open wire line for feeding say a Dual band vertical? Would you need 2 9:1 baluns?

  • @BusDriverRFI
    @BusDriverRFI หลายเดือนก่อน

    You say that the line needs to be properly terminated, yet people ask about using open wire 600 ohm open wire directly to a dipole and you don't flinch. Your transmission line is centerpiece to your transmission system. It must be matched at both ends. If you start with a 50 ohm transmitter, you need to use a 12:1 at the input to your open wire 600 ohm line. That may be after a 50 ohm line of some length. If you then have a ~75 ohm antenna, then you can utilize a 8:1 to match it at the dipole center feedpoint. This is critical to any successful usage of open wire systems. Especially at 160 meters where RG-58 isn't really all that bad, it would probably outperform a mismatched 600 ohm feeder. The high power open wire at the first looked like an open wire coaxial cable with the center conductors tied together and the outer conductors tied together. Probably 50 ohms. Why didn't you properly load the test arrangements rather than shorting them on the ends? This made no sense to me. Return loss is the amount of signal going out compared to the reflected amount. So if you have a lossy transmission line that takes 50% of your 100W and the antenna transmits 50W, your return loss will look very good at around 45 or so. We need to look at the amount of current actually accepted by the antenna in real tests. If we don't do this, we are hiding our real results. You seem accomplished. I don't have a second class radio telegraph license. I'm just a school bus driver. N9XR
