Dutch oven is so much better than a slow cooker. Let's make a frugal meal together.
Italian beef sandwiches are so good. We aren't using many ingredients so between the inexpensive cuts of meat and little ingredients this dish is a frugal meal to serve a large family size....or small twice :)
My passion is to bring families together around the dinner table with a home cooked meal. I know time can be a factor on why families resort to eating out more. I know eating out is getting very expensive and so are the grocery trips. So what do you do to feed your family?
Let's talk about a frugal meal option AND I'll share my opinion of why a dutch oven is more superior than a slow cooker WHEN you're able to be home and use the oven. Of course this can absolutely be cooked in your slow cooker. I do in fact resort to this method often.

Before pressure canning was a common thing two thousand people more or less were poisoned by botulism each year. Then it dropped to about a hundred people a year when most people safely used pressure canning. Now so many people are ignoring botulinum and canning safely and that is a problem.

I stay away from the groups on FB on purpose because my blood pressure can't handle everyone showing how they're dry canning or wb everything (not even for a safe amount of time for wb practices) I can't say I do everything 100% (I think I have 1 item I can that could be considered "rebel" canning) but some of the risks people are so willing to take has me so concerned.

I canned 36 jars on the weekend and managed to accidentally crank 3 too tight and have lids that sealed but were also badly warped. Into the fridge to use!! When I started canning I had no idea about the difference between water bathing and pressure canning. And I know there are other ways to do it - long water bath, even oven canning - but I find once I got over the fear of pressure canning and the cost of a canner (they are booming expensive to ship to Australia!!) it’s easy enough to pressure can and be safe.

re: the lids not sealing and you cleaning rims: When I watched the video, I noticed that on the first two jars you moistend your rag/towel with vinegar/water and then cleaned the rims. With the later four jars, you only wiped the rim with the rag, but did not first dip it in the vinegar. A hypothesis could be that with 'only wiping' it left a little bit of residue (oil film), whereas the jars which you wiped with rag dipped in vinegar/water the rims were properly cleaned. Could be something to be more meticulous about next time, esp. with your 'failure heavy ingredient' tomatoes. Hope it helps....

Have you considered just using msg instead of the knorr bouillon? Knorr bouillon is pretty much just sugar and salt and msg, with a bunch of other preservatives and food dyes. It’s the msg that adds that umami flavour everyone loves. I actually love msg in moderation. All the ‘it’s so bad’ myths have been debunked and I feel using it in its pure form is better than knorr, but just as yummy!

When I pressure can tomatoes product I had the same problem….. I try to only water bath tomatoes 🍅 because of that . When I have had problems with lids they were ball lids too. Which is sad… but I may use 4 jars ! I love 4 jars!!!

I love that your dog keeps you company in the kitchen. My guys love hanging around hoping for a treat! They are both rescues too. I thought for so many years that I was immune to crying around onions, but I recently switched to glasses instead of contact lenses and now I definitely cry!! I have a foodsaver brand vac sealer and everyone complains about them breaking, but I've had mine with regular use for like 5 years now. I love it!

LOL...that bowl is enormous!! Love cost comparison videos. I do a lot of those on social media...like the cost of dry chickpeas compared to in a can or making my own brown sugar. Some things aren't that different for everyone but living in a remote area on a sailboat makes a difference for us.

@@sailorgirl2017 I love that bowl 🤭 it's so big but helps with a few projects for sure. I like cost videos too because it's a common question I get when it comes to home preservation so I like to have some facts behind what I do. I make my own brown sugar as well. Christmas time I'll buy brown sugar for certain baked goods but that's it. Seems silly to have the components on hand at all times but still go buy it for everyday use.

@@angelas_pantry_obsession That makes sense - for me a kilo of brown sugar can cost $4.39 but I can buy a 2kg bag of white for $1.99 - Molasses keeps well so for me it's very cost effective...plus it can take 6 hours round trip to get to the grocers! LOL.

But also, I think people feel better buying organic so the cost is kinda irrelevant regarding processing your own veggies :) Plus you know who touched all those onions!

I do this also !! It’s great !! I do onions by themselves and peppers too. Than I bag onions and peppers together so I can just grab one bag and go! Or sent it with my oldest son and he can meal prep for himself when he gets back home!! It’s my life so simple and easy!!
