Subaru Extreme Battery Corrosion - Permanent Fix
I have seen so many Subarus (old and new) that have terrible battery terminal post and hold down bracket corrosion … it is ridiculous. This video describes what I believe to be the souce of the problem and how to permanently resolve it. By following the prescibed procedure, I no longer have this issue on my Subarus (for years).

Kenmore HE3 Washer broken spider bracket fix!
Figured out that this was my problem after watching your video. I agree with you, that plastic is flimsier than my ex. 😂
Thank you so much! I was able to fix mine with nail products. This exact piece soon as I got open was all crumbled like yours. I appreciate the help. I only spent $20 on mine so it was worth it.
Nice ... sounds like a creative fix!
6 years on and you’re still helping people. 30min fix and just happened to have all the materials. Bless ya brother 🤘
Glad to help bro!
What if that pe peace is crack 5:30
just use wd40 and call it a day
Been there done that. I always use dielectric grease on my battery posts. It works fine and no corrosion on all other vehicles. On my Subarus I have also tried covering the entire hold down bracket with a thin layer of dielectric grease ... it keeps corrosion a bay for a few months but then it starts again.
Thank u so much , i appreciate your effort.
Brand new out of the box, VAX Rapid Power Revive, which I setup and left for a few minutes to answer the door. Came back to find it had flooded the floor with a full tank. On opening I found the culprit to be the same component but it was in perfect condition. The problem was the 4 screws that hold it together had not been tightened. Video helped a lot, thanks.
You are amazing thank you!!!!
Thank you!! Just borrowed this one from my 77 year old grandmother and realized it was broken. My husband and i were able to fix it thanks to your video. She would have ended up spending hundreds on a new one.
Good deal and happy to hear you got it fixed!
Will electric tape do?
If you build it up thick enough to keep the bracket just slightly off the battery, think it will work just fine! Even a 1" by 2" piece of thick plastic (maybe cut out of a detergent bottle or similar) would work.
I have this problem thanks for your great advice
Just what I needed. Thank so much
6 years later and this video saved me some money and a trip to the store to fix this part. Thank you!!
You are welcome and great to hear!
Same! 6 years later!
Thanks a bunch! I just took mine apart, and let a little water run through to see where the leaks coming from and it’s the same faulty part as yours. Nothings broken but like yours it has a HUGE gap! I don’t have any sealant on hand so I’m going to try using a nail primer then a rubber base gel nail polish and cure it under the UV in layers to see if that does the trick for now. Will update later, you can assume it worked i don’t 😂
Hi and quite creative of you! I know some of the UV glues make for a water tight and strong bond. And yes, I would be interested to know if you think your fix is holding up.
My attachment stopped spraying any suggestions
Also only got to use thisncleaner a few times when it started leaking water. I'm about to try this fix. Hope it works and i appreciate the video. Thanks.
Hi Gary, This fix definitely works ... I did my repair 6 years ago and no issues since. So go for it and let me know if you have any questions.
@doyourthingcowboy works like a new one. I need to order a gasket for the dirty water tank and it's good to go. Thanks for the fix and update.
Same problem here
And if your smart elick kids see you doing this and ask why; tell them because times are rough and we can't waste food; I am making peanufbutter soup! 😊
Exactly where mine leaked. 2 screws were broken
Thank You 🙏 great video. Helped a lot 🎉
Okay... So, if you're planning on reusing the jar and want the rim to stay intact, you *_must_* make certain that there is no foil still attached to the rim. The foil will overheat in the microwave almost instantly and melt the plastic. Also, don't pour that oily crap down your kitchen sink drain. That oil will stick in the drainpipes.
You are correct and good point! My intent is just for recycling the jars.
@@netdoctor1 oooo I hate it when I do that.
Thank you, great video. Excellent details. Ours is doing the exact same thing😊👍
Thanks for posting this video! I called Hoover customer service and they were no help other than offering a 15 % discount for me to purchase another carper cleaner from them! Checked my carpet cleaner after reviewing your video and low and behold the plastic piece you identified in the video was cracked. Now just waiting for my sealant to cure/dry so I can put back together and test for leaks.
👍 John, You should be good to go! My Hoover is still working great since posting this video.
The battery is releasing small amount of sulfuric vapor which accumulates around the battery. It will not attack the metal and paint when dry but when the surface gets wet it turns to a diluted sulfuric acid. Paint don't protect metals from acid attack. To neutralise the acid try dissolving baking soda as much as you can on small amount of water then spray or pour it around the battery. If surface is acidic, you will see a bubbling reaction. You will make a fizzing sound when the surface is very acidic. Instead of using a standard lead acid flooded battery, use EFB battery that looks like AGM battery that has 1 vent hole on the positive and negative side. You can either vent from both side or plugged one side and attach a vent hose on the opposite side then route the hose away from the battery and ground terminal.
worked like a charm thanks I microwaved 40 seconds it did make a steaming release when the lid was put on but it worked!
Great video. I had the same problem and now good to go. Thank you again for your expertise problem solving!
Same problem here first time using it and its leaking from the bottom
First time using it ... wow, seriously? I'm starting to think some legal action needs to be taken up with Hoover ... this is totally ridiculous and irresponsible on Hoover's part!
If you have any questions let me know. Mine has been working fine this I published this video.
I put the weld stuff everywhere and it still leaked. I gave up. It is a very poor design. I hope the newer ones dont have the same design. The part is available on ebay or amazon for around 65 bucks but I am hesitant to spend this if it will happen again,
Just bought a PowerScrub, as a preventative action, I wonder if placing or wrapping a couple of zip ties enveloping the top and opposite side of the pump would have a "clamping effect" on the side part with the screws from cracking (or separating from the body) to begin with and holding the screws in their original holes. Is vibration a factor for the separating of the plastic ?
Hi Smiley, I agree, vibration is likely the cause of the plastic cracking around the screws. The only issues I can possibly see with using zip ties as you suggest is: 1) they might vibrate off the water pump and possibly get caught up in something (i.e. cleaning brushes), 2) the plastic could still crack and the zip ties may hide a leak for a period of time. Otherwise, your idea may indeed be a good preventative measure. Don't worry though, if you do get a leak you'll know soon enough 😂 but you know how to fix it!
@@doyourthingcowboy Thx for the reply, Yes they may slip or the pump crack even so. Gluing the zips where they make contact on the body would cure the "slip" and all failing, make the shown repair. Thanks again.
Thanks, I've never had such a problem with a car before now! I was reading about this and people were saying it might be overcharging the battery, but it seems way to common of a problem.
Hi Sundrop, Thanks for your reply. Yeah I've seen this issue on both Subarus I've owned and on several others. Over charging (in my mind) via alternator or external charger would not explain why the the steel hold down racket gets severely corroded as well. For the bracket to corrode (and paint eaten off) as badly as they often do, I think a tiny amount of current is travelling across the top of the battery via the thin layer of oil and grim that accumulates on the battery over time. Engine oil does conduct electricity. I'm sure there is oil vaper floating around under the hood (especially in hot weather) that lands on the battery surface and elsewhere. For some reason, my Subaru batteries were always much grimier versus other vehicles I've owned. Anyhow, I still love Subarus as they run forever and are easy to work on. I sure like my Chevys too.
Thanks
Thats interesting you mention the battery tie down drawing current. I had a battery corrosion and draining issue i did check to see if the tie down was drawing anything and there was no draw from it off or with the car running
Bingo! Thanks to you I resolved my problem. Thank you my friend 👍
Nice and glad you're good to go!
Same problem. Cant believe so many people have this issue
Thank you, I cant believe there are over 100k of us with the same exact problem, waiting for epoxy to dry, will see if it leaks tomorrow.
Agreed and unreal. When I first called Hoover for advice on this situation they wanted close to $90 just to take a look at my Spin Scrub 50. And, the service guy made some comment to the effect of "You know, these machines aren't built to last forever"! I responded with mine is only 6 months old and hung up.
Oh and let me know if you have any questions/issues.
Great job thank you. Off topic and a completely useless question but has anyone ever told you that you sound like Johnny Depp?
Interesting, can't say that I have. I'll have to catch some Johnny Depp and see if I hear a resemblance. When I was younger I was told several times that I looked like Woody Harrelson ... didn't really see that either😂. Take care and thanks for commenting!
Hundred percent worked for me using 5-minute epoxy. Thank you!
Awesome... glad to hear it!
Thank you. Same thing happened mine, same post.
Thank you for this tutorial! I have a brand new grandbaby coming over and my Hoover leaked water everywhere! I felt so defeated until I found this video! I appreciate you!!
Hi Erika, So glad to hear this helped you out and hopefully your carpet(s) are clean for your new grandbaby!
THANK YOU for this video! I have mine apart for the same problem and was boggled and hesitant to start taking the components and hoses apart. I really appreciate this!
Your are quite welcome Lisa! Let me know if you any questions and take care...
Thanks so much. the exact problem. Unit fixed. Just can't believe that Hoover would not modify this or offer a free repair. I had used my unit 4 times on a couple of light area rugs; unfortunately this was past a year warranty period.
THANK YOU. I'm sitting here taking my own machine apart because it's dumping water everywhere. I was hoping someone had already figured out what the issue was to save myself some trial and error, and sure enough, you had!
You are welcome Lily! If you have any questions, let me know.
Did this today to my waders...time will tell. Lost my felt completely last weekend while trying to chase down a wrangly rainbow on Elk Creek. Not only did i lose the felt, but when I went to grab the fish, I lost it as well.
🤣 I can relate, brother! And I'll be fixing my boots this weekend.
Hoover carpet cleaners are notorious for leaking. 😡
I need help with upholstery hose, wont spray water. Can you help. Cant find anything on it
Hi Gina, Sorry but I have not used the upholstery hose. Hopefully someone else here knows more about it and/or has experienced issues.
I farted 😂and it broke
Too funny and likely true!! 😁
Same issue here except 2 screws stripped/broken. Epoxy is drying now - thanks!
Same problem, both bottom tabs broke off. Thanks for the fix, appreciate you!
Yea they call that diaphragm the 'reservoir' which isn't aptly named at all, lol. Did the same, replaced it and thought ya, I get to do my upholstery like I planned... fortunately I had it on the tile floor but was mortified when the water still poured out. Guess I'll take the big cover off, this respect is exactly what's going on with mine also.
thx for this. I'm giving it a try. I used some rubber pipe insulation tape I had laying around. It's nice because it is sticky on one side and easily cut to fit.
That should do the trick and sounds easy to use! So I assume you have had some issues with corrosion on the battery bracket and or terminals?
@@doyourthingcowboy yeah I bought a used subaru outback 2011 with 200k miles. Has a genuine Subaru battery manufactured Dec 2019. Looked ok when I first bought it, but within months it was getting all corroded... worst I've ever seen, and I live on a ranch and deal with a lot of batteries. In particular the big battery strap plate on top had a lot of acid buildup, and when I finally removed it after 2 years, there was a white cake underneath about 1/16" thick and so hard I had to remove it with razor blade scraper and then wire wheel on shop grinder. I cleaned everything up, battery, terminals, painted the top strap a nice cherry red to protect from rusting, applied the rubber tape underneath strap, and also fluid film over both terminals to protect them from acid. Hopefully it will stay clean now. btw, your theory about the battery strap possibly leading to premature head gasket failure is intriguing. HG's have been such an issue with Subarus... wouldn't it be ironic if that was a cause all along? such a simple thing.
Hey Dan, Just reaching out to see how your fix is working out? I'm guessing you are not having any further corrosion issues at least on the metal hold down strap. One thing I've been thinking about lately is why my battery posts have remained corrosion free the last 5-6 years (since my fix). I can see how something rubber under the hold down strap has kept it clean. But, if in fact a tiny bit of current is indeed running across the battery top you'd think it would cause a bit of corrosion on the posts. Maybe the metal hold strap just exacerbates corrosion when it's in direct contact with the battery top? @@danlibby6810
