Crossover step in serve receive
When you get a flat cross angle serve inside half, dont try to get there and react with a crossover step lean to efficiently get your platform to the ball.

What was off about the pass at 12:00? the timing of the leg push?

Hey sorry, i didnt realize this was public and had comments. Actually 12:00 was good. I think when i was categorizing each angle, then i put all the bad passes at the end. But i think at the very end i had a zoom in and slow down of a good pass to show these details easier. So i can find it easier and show to students quicker. Everything else was just categorized to see a pattern of movements on each angle without slowing it down. I didnt even realize i had that at the end to tell you the truth because i did it so long ago i only posted it to clear room on my device but can share it with students.

The film and analysis is very good but the naming of these techniques are a little confusing and don’t reflect the movement to me

Hey i didnt realize i had this public and had comments until today. Yeah some term i just make up to label details and realize semantics and context my not match until explain it. I really just posted this to save room on devices and have a visual example for my students. And sometimes i see a reoccurring pattern of a detail that think needs to be labeled but there isnt one so i make it up to the best can to make sense for my students to remember it. And inmay have to describe why i labeled it that way and sometimes find a better word that matches that detail and is not confused with another detail. Which steps made sense or didnt make sense maybe i can explain

I usually find your analysis really interesting, and I know this is just for your students. I had a different idea than you on this one. Her approach rhythm is off, and it looks like she's contacting about net height. It looks like she's simply reaching as high as she can with her right hand, so of course her right hip is going to end up closer to the ball and therefore 'opened.' There's nothing wrong with the hip opening up. In fact, if you had any of these pros jump and not swing, their hips would also end up 'opened' because they're not countering that opening rotation by swinging across their body. When you do swing across your body, then your hips get some counterclockwise rotation, so that's why the pros. Anyways, seems like the problem is that Maddy has her hips already rotated by the time she's jumping. To fix this, all she has to do is take off with her hips facing a little bit to the right of the ball. More importantly, since she's not hitting down, it might make things easier to call for off sets and look out for staying far behind the ball. Probably could approach from farther back too What do you think?

Hey, sorry didnt realize this was public and had a comment until today. The biggest ive been seeing is this over rotation. And when you say “there is a counter clockwise hip motion” thats my main point. The hips open to setup a stretch but we have to release that stretch and thats why the counter clockwise motion happens. And im see girls over rotating like this thinking they are using their hips. Well they are, but too much, where it not releasing the arm speed on time or with an efficient paths. So i just wanted her to see that the best use their hips but dont over-rotate their hips

love ur videos, off-standard technique (serve reception) is really great sometimes, but this one is non-hearable at all =( very very pity.

I agree with Paul Me. How do you guys play on such a windy day? I hate how the ball moves everywhere. I know it's the beach, unpredictable with the wind.

Really wish I could hear the audio. From what little I could hear it sounded like you had great advice which I would like to hear. I hope you can do another video just like this with maybe wind protection for the audio. I appreciate the effort to share the video. Please post more video's I would like to learn and I am sure many others would like to learn from you. These types of videos do have a ton of value. Thank you!

I love your serve receive analysis videos. You're the only one who actually does this type of video. Can you keep doing more? I really struggle with serve receive when the ball is coming fast or a floater. My struggles are I'm not quite sure where the ball is going to land. It's either too short and I didn't expect it to be, coming to my chest and too late to react, or over my head, and don't know how to react to that. I guess I'm a mess. I think the problem is I don't exactly know how to read the serve. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in your videos!

I noticed a lot of coaches teach this way. I can imagine that he teaches this way is because he was given free slow balls to receive and he must add kinetic energy with his arms to get the ball high enough for his setter. During a game at a high level, the same motion and hard driven serves the same motion would lift the ball too high into the sky or shank it. There is a noticeable discrepancy between teaching and practicing passing with easy free balls and actual serve receives. Maybe it would be better when practicing with high repetitions to receive medium driven shots from your practicing buddy instead of merely passing back and forth and ending up with a hybrid pass/ bump set and learn neither by doing that.

Very good but I disagree with one thing. I manage often to serve a flat floater just above the net that drops dead right after passing the net and then drops dead in the first third of the court. This is done by having a high contact point with taller players. It often surprises my opponent and is a good way to score. It's a difficult serve but not impossible to achieve. However, the low squat position is still the best option as explained in the video. 👍

What does a “stride base” mean? Does it mean your feet are quite far apart? Do you use same base for a hand set?

I appreciate on some videos you differentiate the mistakes the avg player makes vs the professionals. In this one it was a little tough to hear what was being said on the other side of the net. Watching an analysis like this can be really valuable for the avg player like me. Especially if you know the typical 2 or 3 things one does wrong when passing so that person can do self correction in the future instead of just getting upset and repeating the same mistake so they never improve. Thanks for putting up the channel. I don't know your background but I can tell you know your stuff and sound like a really good coach.
