Time In The Bottle | Ardbeg Spectacular VS Ardbeg 5 Year Old Cask Strength Blend
Hi folks. This is a new series I am starting up - where I try out bottles that have been sitting for a while, and see if there are any changes. For today the Ardbeg Spectacular has been open for around 7 months now, and the Ardbeg 5 year old blend for over a year. Hope you enjoy this new series and my thights :)

Up for review today I try out the latest Springbank 10 sherry limited release - this time cask maturation was 5 years in refill ex-bourbon casks and 5 years in fresh Amontillado casks. I am very lucky to have got a bottle of this and a massive shoutout to my local. Will we get the Springbank distillery character on this release? If you wish spend a bit of time and watch to see. Up for review today I try out a 19 year old from an Orkney distillery (Highland Park), bottled by independent bottler Cadenhead's, as part of their Enigma series. In short it is a very interesting, intriguing bottle that I would not have guessed was from Highland Park, purely based on the nose. Rum Review #47 | Master Of Malt Fiji 2009 13 Year Old 61% ABV | Best Value Rum Of The Year

For my review today I am staying in Fiji and review a 13 year old single cask rum, bottled by Master Of Malt. At under £50, in my opinion, this is the best value rum of the year. Unfortunately sold out from Master Of Malt just now, however it may appear again as it looks like they may be releasing it in batches. For the price it cannot be beaten. Congratulations for landing a bottle, opening it and reviewing it. It sounds like a good one. There's no chance of buying a bottle off the shelf. I'm so pleased it's not sulphured because that is a real possibility with Springbank. Amontillado, Palo Cortado or Oloroso will all give a similar profile when used in whisky. The main factor is how long the sherry maturation is involved. By the way, it's pronounced Amon-tea-ado (my wife is Spanish). I should be getting brassed off about not landing another batch of Springbank yet again but I'm not too bothered. This past month or so I've been so fortunate to have landed a lot of quality independent stuff, including your Fiji recommendation, most of which has been excellent value. I even resisted the temptation to buy a bottle of Daftmill which was on my seller's website for two weeks. Went for some ex-bourbon Bimber instead which was £35 cheaper. I'm also a wine and sherry nerd as well and spend a lot of time in that world as well. There's very little cross over in the two worlds and that's a shame because quality sherry has all the characteristics of top end whisky. Anyway, fine review and don't be so self-depreciative. You review very good stuff and it is much appreciated. WT

      Thanks for your comment mate and also for correcting my pronunciation haha. I had a feeling I got it wrong. Yes I am very happy with this bottle. I been shopping at the place I got it from for around 5 years so figured if you don't ask you don't get. Fortunately the owner is very generous and perhaps luck on my side. Couldn't get the 12 cask strength nor the longrow 18 so felt good to score something. Also great to see the distillery character coming out in the finish. Hope you are getting along well with that Fiji as it's a little cracker imo. Daftmill is one I still have to try. Only thing that has stopped me is the high price for 46% ABV. I still see the latest release out there so it's not instantly selling out. Will definitely go the sample route if I can get it. Anyway thanks again mate and good to see you are doing well 👍

    I'm also a fan of this bottle. It's interesting how different people pick up on different notes. On the nose, I found a pear note to be dominant, with orange, among others, in the background. A fruit salad was a good description for this rum.

    I missed out on this one but I'm always on and off on the Foursquare trail. I joined the journey from day one and I've had more than my fair share. I've had some of the fancy ones but my favourite bang for buck are the 12 ex-bourbons. I'm a fan of Doorly's and Seale's too. I hear what you say about the oak because it's always present but just about contained. I'm a big fan of Mount Gay too and just ploughed through the Eclipse Navy Strength which is a cracker for the money. This sounds absolutely excellent but guess what though my old buddy? Berry Bros & Rudd have a private cask 15 year old (55%) which I suspect is an absolute diamond. I've got one but it's flying under the radar and still available from their website. They have a good history of rum and it's well worth keeping an eye on the website.

    Great to see you open this bottle and you encouraged me to open mine at long last. Yep, the smell is pouring out just when you open the seal. These Kill Devil Hampdens are classic off the the radar funk bombs but this is way below the 10 and 11. I completely agree with your nosing and tasting notes. It drinks well neat with the classic aged Jamaica (Hampden) profile of concentrated pineapple, green olive brine, ripe papaya and mango. Perhaps a tiny bit of banana but its not too overripe. Yes, a bit of coconut and all the other stuff. It takes water very well. I bought two back in the day and the 10 and 11 as well. Still have an unopened 11. I've recently decided to make a start and dip into my stash. There's a fair amount of it and I bought it to save for some later date after all. Besides, we cant take it with us to the great distillery in the sky.

      Hey mate great to hear from you and glad that you are doing well. Yeah really something special with the Hampden Kill Devils. As you said the 16 does not have the same levels of funk of the 10 and 11 but a superb bottle in it's own right...for me a bit more refined for a higher ester Hampden.Keep an eye on auctions mate...they do come up now and again and I got this one not that much more than the original retail. For some reason they don't seem to be as popular as the Velier releases as an example but that suits me just fine. By the way, just a heads up in case you have not heard about it, there is a belter of a rum currently on MOM, a rather funky South Pacific Fiji 13 yo. On the nose feels almost like a continental Guyana with the funk it has. Does drink a little hot but packs a lot of flavour. Still have to do a review of it but it will be my bargain single cask rum of the year. It's one of MOM's own bottlings, bottled at 61% ABV. Check it out if you are interested, but hurry as it keeps on disappearing. As always mate a pleasure to hear from you. Keep well and see you soon 🥃

    Never enough of Caol Ilas. I like spirit driven ( in a good way of course) peaty whiskies so i preffer younger punchy peat monsters. One of the best Caol Ila i ever had was Cadenhead's 11yo Palo Cortado, yummy stuff. Also tried 17yo from bourbon hogshead, from Cadenheads as well and it was fantastic. Generally love Caol Ila and in my opinion Caol Ila's distilate always plays well in different maturation or finishing in sherry/ wine casks. Im really intrigued of this medicinal aspect in G&M expression, which i like very much. This bottle is still available at £160 so bit pricey but maybe i pull the trigger as a treat to myself as a Christmas present 😁. Cheers for this nice review 😁🥂🥂🥂🙋‍♂️

      @@-xirx- I am not that familiar with IB of Caol Ila. A few years back I would regularly get the Elements Of Islay series. They bottled several Caol Ila expressions, most around 6-8 years old if my memory is right. Very competitively priced (around £60 or so) and all very enjoyable, albeit a tad youthful. Back then I could not afford more expensive expressions with more age, so these bottles were great to get my Caol Ila fix. Probably difficult to get now, but if you find any at around the price I mentioned you should definitely get a bottle - mind they only came in 50cl bottles, however I still think it was worth it at that price. This Halcyon Spirits bottle is obviously a different beast to the Elements Of Islay releases - more mature, less alcohol bite etc. I cannot speak regarding the Rare Cask and G&M bottles as I have never had them, but I don't think you could go wrong. Perhaps seek out a sample if you can before committing to an entire bottle - I know that is not always easy but it's a lot of money to spend. I got the Halcyon Spirits bottle based on the strength of their previous release (Burnside) which is excellent imo. Sometimes you have to take a punt and hope for the best lol. Don't know if I have really answered your question, but yeah the Elements Of Islay bottles were great value as far as IB go. Cheers 🥃

    I read somewhere that this Long Pond 17 can taste a bit soapy, that it's definitely a bit rough. Might it be less intimidating for us whisky drinkers I wonder? What are your thoughts?

    • @whiskyjourney175
      @whiskyjourney175 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Think you may be referencing Serge's review at Whiskyfun because he mentions the "soapiness"? I read his review a month or so back and to be honest I disagree with some of his thoughts. First he states it is a "classic high-ester Jamaican" on the nose - In my opinion it is not and you would be disappointed getting it with that in mind. The Whisky Jury STCE and Cambridge STCE are far more estery and funky. I would consider this Whisky Blues release to be on par with the Kill Devil 16 year old release - so lower to medium ester levels. Having drunk a bottle of this I don't understand the soapy aspect he is talking about. I never felt that - I mostly agree with his assessment of the other tasting notes though, which I found to be very enjoyable. It is a challenging high ABV rum, and will certainly not be for everyone. However, of all the Long Ponds I do have this one does come in last place. It's not a bad dram or anything like that...it's just that I prefer the other bottles that I have. So, from first to last, Cambridge 12 year old, Kill Devil 16 Year Old, Thompson Bros 22 year old tied with the Whisky Jury 7 year old and lastly this Whisky Blues 17 year old. A very good bottle, but I would not purchase another one because there are other Long Pond botttles I would purchase first if given the chance.

      @@whiskyjourney175 thank you for so many helpfull details. I had this recommended to me for a tasting session, but from what I gather in that price category there are better options. It also might be a little too intense for people who are not fully into rum, or the Jamaican style.

      @whiskyjourney175 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BDamen1984 Yes, it is an intense rum and to be honest does benefit with a good half hour or so in the glass, so maybe not the best option for a tasting. A bottle I would recommend (have not reviewed it yet) is The Cane II 15 year old Jamaican blend from Precious Drops. It's a blend of pot and column still rums from Long Pond/New Yarmouth/Clarendon/Worthy Park. This particular Long Pond expression was Tropically aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon and Continentally aged for 4 years in ex-Ferrand casks before being finished for 7 months in ex-Spanish orange wine casks. Like you, I have fond memories of those fantastic single barrel port casks from Billy Walker's days at Benriach. Jesus, they were 19 years old. Amrut did a fantastic port too. Those whiskies were chocolate in colour. I left a reply in Nicholas' comment explaining what I think about that. Where is Ardbeg at now? Is this any better than the Wee Beastie 5 year which is a fraction of the price? The 10 is half the price and we have age statements. It costs more than Ugi and Corry which are high strength NAS but pretty poor quality these days. Ardbeg continue to take the piss. They are owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy which specialise in luxury goods. Releases like this are meant to perpetuate that myth. It's a decent £50 whisky. Yes the single (peated) port casks from Benriach were seriously good, and great value for money too. Unfortunately for me all long gone, but have very fond memories of them. Obviously a different style of peat, but it had that juicy character and were far, far darker in colour and a much richer experience. But throwing Ardbeg into Quinta Ruban casks comes across as a bit lazy...they could have crafted something seriously special but in the end it comes across as a bit of a mediocre project. Don't get me wrong I still think this is a decent dram, however could have been so much more if they had bumped up the ABV (55%+) and chosen first fill port casks. However, we all know the price would have been insane if they had gone that route. As usual cheers for you comments bud 🥃

    Unfortunately, the supply and the market are very large, which is why the companies/distillers put out their products in a dumping manner - most of which are more just marketing - rather than a quality product. Outside of the Ardbeg core range - it's very difficult to get an Ardbeg whiskey that isn't ridiculously overpriced and very mediocre. The core range light also fades more and more. There is a good flow today - it is not so difficult to buy a good whiskey because of the huge supply, but it is already difficult to get a really outstanding piece, since the demand, price and the hype are huge. At least that's exciting. More good tasting - to you.

    The colour tells me the port influence from these casks is very weak and not what I was looking / hoping for on this one 😢 The port cask here had me interested, but per @NicholasFrangipane 's comment below, if this is merely just throwing young Ardbeg into ex Quita Ruban casks this is another piss take from Ardbeg it seems... Thank you for saving me some money.

      Thanks for your comment and yeah I completely agree with you regarding the port influence and I was surprised at how light the spirit is...in my opinion these were "tired" casks and the dram simply does not have the "juicy" character which I would expect from port cask maturation as it remains consistently dry throughout. After having a few more drams post review I feel this was a missed opportunity in my opinion as they could and should have used fresh port casks which would have made things a lot more interesting. I still feel this is a decent dram, however as I stated in my review just not worth the price.

      @@welshtoro3256 I need to do a comparison tasting between the Spectacular and Chorlton Whisky's Dun Dearg 5 year old. I did do a review of it but it did not get that many views - basically a blended malt of 2 thirds 5 year old Ardbeg and 1 third of Caol Ila 15 year old. A seriously good dram for the price - around £55 it was and bottled at a hefty 56.9% ABV!

    Great review. Have a chance in a few weeks (travelling to the UK from Canada for work) to pick this up for a little short of £300 including VAT (which I’ll get to refund). If I choose to go for it I won’t have the budget to pick up a couple other bottles that I’ve found available, a foursquare Nobiliary for £150, a Renaissance red wine cask 2019 for £180, and a Hampden Great House 2023 for £120. Would you say this bottle simply blows those others out of the water despite the price increase? Obviously I get it’s comparing apples to oranges but I have to make a hard choice!! 😂

      Indeed it is a difficult choice, and I have not tried all the rums you list, but I would personally go for the Caroni. Out of the 3 bottles of Caroni I have (the Master Of Malt, the That-Boutiquey Rum Company and this one) I enjoy this one the most as I feel it encapsulates what Caroni is all about. Just having a wee nip of it now and all the notes of Caroni are strong - rubbery funk, medicinal balms, industrial character, big menthol notes in the finish to name a few of the notes. The other Caroni bottles I have mentioned may be higher strength (60% ABV+) but feel more polished, and have less of the character of Caroni I am looking for. The 100th Anniversary just feels more "heavy" even at the lower strength. It's just an excellent bottle. The Hampden Great House 2023 for me is a very good bottle, however I prefer the 2022 release. More funk on the 2022, more esters, perhaps more unrefined, less fruity than the 2023, however I personally prefer the "rawer" funkier character of the 2022 release. I have not had the Foursquare, however without tasting it would it be that much different than other Foursquare releases? I have around 5-6 different Foursquare relases, and they are really good, however if I had to blind taste them I would find it difficult to really tell them apart. The Renaissance red wine cask I cannot really comment on as I have not had it (I am assuming this is the Whisky Exchange release). Overrall I find the Caroni release to be very unique and different. Sure it's expensive, but if I had the choice I would go with the Caroni personally. But that's just me, so take it with a massive grain of salt 🥃

    Bill Lumsden gave some info on the casks in this week’s WhiskyCast. He said they took Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban casks, which had held Glenmorangie for 18-24 months, and then filled them with Ardbeg. So they are second fill casks. He said they first filled the casks in 2009 and that the port casks were 15 and 13 years old. (He must’ve been rounding up, though, because my bottle says it was filled in November 2023, so that would be 14 years at most.)

      Many thanks for your comment mate and for clarifying. It's a shame they could not just put this information on the bottle or the packaging. It's a very good drop but at its price point I would appreciate more transparency. Will definitely check out WhiskyCast so appreciate the recommendation 🥃

      Okay, but what kind of port goes into the Quinta Ruban casks and how long is it in those casks? Is it even port that goes on sale? Then whisky is put into those questionable casks for 14 odd years. Remember, Glenmorangie might re-use those casks in future Quinta Ruban blending. Then, we stick peated whisky in it. What trace of port is left after that? It's exactly the issue behind the sherry scam in the whisky industry.

    • @NicholasFrangipane
      @NicholasFrangipane 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lumsden specifically said that these were second fill casks and only used for 18-24 months. He said that it was a shame to get rid of them after one use, which is why he came up with this plan to use them in Spectacular-so they haven’t been reused by Glenmo, and they are second fill casks.
