How to Improve Engineering Project Management - DQDesign
Are you looking for ways to improve Engineering project management methods? The following suggested topics/methods are important factors to consider incorporating into your process for any type of innovative development projects.
Most companies that have engineering needs without engineering capabilities in house seek a simplified, effective, confident way of reaching out for services. Engineering projects typically require substantial input from the client and this article seeks to add value by improving methods and eliminating unnecessary procedures from initialization to closing of outsourced engineering project processes between your organization and outsource Engineering firms.
The PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge) is the referenced method of process management: www.pmi.org/pmbok-guide-standards:
Initialization: Charter, Stakeholders
Planning: Scope, Schedule, Cost, Quality, Resource, Communication, Risk, Procurement
Execute the plan
Monitor & Control the Execution

About the Author: Dan Quiggle
My 30+ year career has revolved entirely around contract Engineering Outsourcing services. I have been on both sides of the equation and managed Engineers, Designers, Drafters, Checkers, Mechanics, Software, Customers, Projects, Owners etc. I’ve dealt with Governments, Large Corporations, Small Businesses, Foreign and Domestic. I recruited and managed over 280 Engineers, Designers and Drafters. I’ve integrated all of the major Engineering Disciplines for a big variety of over 10,000 projects. I’ve been exposed to the Project Management side of all these entities and individuals. I’ve competed and cooperated with other engineering firms, and now I’m developing my own consultancy!
I’ve studied and applied components of the PMBOK since the late 80’s, though I haven’t taken the pmp test. Depending on the scale of the project, most things come naturally. However multi discipline projects require much more attention to detail and possibly a dedicated full time project manager.
In the late 90’s we were introduced to Scopes of Work. Performance metrics. We were simply available to our customers hourly to spend general pots of money identified collectively, estimating efforts of required team members on blanket order agreements. The Client then needed to introduce separation between our outsource firm and themselves. In doing so, Scopes of work, performance metrics, standard work practices, lessons learned became part of every project. Originally we felt this took away from our efficiency, however these practices provided clearly defined expectations for all involved as well as performance metrics. PM is all about setting boundaries and managing expectations.
I’ve developed a number of personalized approaches to the various customers and projects. Contact dqdesign for more information and how we can help your project management process.

When we pick up a platic product we see ridges that reinforce the structure and reduce the amount of proct used ABS etc. Is there a discipline these techniques come under. Fantastic ammount of experience thanks for your help.

What is lacking in Mechanical Engineers today, is the knowledge of how to design mechanisms correctly. Did know that there's a mathematical formula that can be used for all mechanism designs? It's called Gruebler's Count. I found a way to make it practical for all 3D mechanisms. Here's the link if you are interested. th-cam.com/video/KFB8gMjxDPk/w-d-xo.html

I agree!! I understand software and digital technologies are the wave but I feel like mechanical engineering doesn't get the kind of love and publicity it deserves. With software, almost every small thing is indexed and searchable and in most cases is freely open. With mechanical design it feels like shots in the dark and stumbling processes. And then once you attain a certain level of knowledge it's like you either only ever find the absolute basics or the most esoteric things. There's a channel called star rapid that's a rapid prototyping company and they've been great in bridging that gap between absolute basics and the more niche topics. Check them out as well! There's also tarkka but they upload veeeerryyy slowly

I found your video via Reddit and I have to say it's very well done, informative and funny. You have a cool background story too. I am a diy shade tree dummy, figuring out how I'm going to design a cheap stand for big rolls of packing bubble wrap for a non profit that I volunteer for, with materials that I already have. Your video did help reaffirm my thinking that I should use an engineering/design firm, rather than going straight to a contractor for a big project I'll need to do at my house. Thanks!

If you can ask a tool maker for their opinion. ALWAYS do it. Just because you can make it in CAD doesnt mean it is the right way to make it.

I am so happy I learn 3d modeling in high school. I took biomedical engineering in college and was always picked on projects for my design skills. Ive been a mech design engineer for a large contact lens manufacture for 3 years now. GD&T and drawing sop was one thing that I had to learn and have found out that it is critical. Learning metrology has also been a big help
