Stephen (Siva) Longfellow Fiske
Born into a musical and artistic family in New York City, Stephen was a natural in singing and acting, and performed in school plays and musicals from elementary school through college. He wrote poems and songs in his head and on paper before becoming a self-taught guitarist at the High School of Music and Art during the folk music era of the 60’s. After attending Civil Rights Marches in New York City, Stephen travelled to Washington DC in August, 1963, to take part in the Great March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. gave the “I Have A Dream” Speech which greatly impacted Stephen towards his peace and justice activism. Greatly influenced by the songs of freedom and equality and the call for social justice of the Civil Rights Movement, Stephen developed his own unique folk music style, and while in college, did his first public performances in the Greenwich Village coffee houses, such as Gerde’s Folk City and the Bitter End. After college, he travelled to San Francisco where he became the lead singer and writer with an acid-rock band, “The Bycycle.” The Bycycle became booked by a major agency and performed with such acts as Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Taj Mahal, Canned Heat, and Jimi Hendrix. When the band broke up, Stephen began his solo career and over the years has written hundreds of songs and produced a dozen albums of his music. He has performed widely across the U.S. and overseas, has sung and done voice-overs on commercials, and his music has been in films and video soundtracks. An award-winning songwriter, his songs have been covered by such well known artists as Jose Feliciano and Luther Vandross. Stephen has been primarily an independent artist selling his
products directly to his audiences and keeping a contact list. He is an engaging performer who loves to interact with his audiences and encourages people to sing-along. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, he is a peace and environmental activist whose timely message in song, stories, and poetry.

Interesting discussion about whether the individual or collective experience of kirtan is primary. But I wonder, in the context of Bhakti, which is where kirtan comes from, isn’t the idea that we actually aren’t singing in order to have an experience OR to give an experience to others? Isn’t it the primary goal to transcend those kinds of concerns and sing for the pleasure of God? Ideally, I’m not going to be worried about whether I, or anyone else, has some transformative experience. I’m simply going to perform kirtan because my Lord likes it. If He wants to reward me with some small amount of bliss, great! If not, great!

Happy to have you on the Journey! I don’t know if it will help but it becomes easier to face the hard things with practice. My tip from being on the journey 11 years in now since my awakening is to focus on being present. Feel your breath, your inner body as much as you possibly can throughout your everyday life. This is the key for both rapid progress as well as being able to face whatever comes your way. Presence is THAT which you’re looking for which of course is yourself. You’re looking for who you really are and you have always been yourself in the only time that exists, which is the present moment. And the present moment is a present, a gift. So by being present you become a gift to yourself and the world! Hope this helps and inspire you to keep going! Let me know I can be of any assistance to you, happy to share what I’ve learned so far! 🙏💕

So often over the past 22 years I have heard staff and visitors disparage my beloved state of Virginia. And notice how this guy Jeff not only talks smack about my home state and its beautiful countryside, but apropos to nothing, this guy has to be sure and squeeze in that Donald Trump is a liar. Why are these people so obsessed with Donald Trump? He's over with. The Trump nonsense and the comments about all of us in Virginia being rednecks is bad manners, bad business and it sure isn't what I learned about compassion in any of my teacher trainings with Satya Greenstone or from Gurudev. I have been to many -- I love it there. Please, please, please, I know you are from that generation of "hippies," but the moral and cultural superiority is disheartening and so disappointing. Jeff I was a reporter and I have lived in Europe and been to every city you mentioned for lengthy periods of time. I see nothing about those places that are any better than where I live. My name is Emily Prema Kelly and I assume full responsibility for this post. I am an Integral Yoga teacher and these are my words and feelings.
