couldn’t we just easily tie this pattern on a short shank? I just don’t like the idea of Hooks dangling way off the ass end of a fly. I mean, we need look no further than Kelly Gallup to know that fish will always hit the head. They don’t want whatever they’ve eaten, stuck backwards in their throat with its dorsal fin hung up.. great work great video. I’m not trying to be confrontational I’m just wondering what the need for the hook hanging so far off the back is when the fish is gonna slam the head of that fly.. if there’s an insight that I’m missing then please let me know..

I really like your attitude! Experiment with different components that are readily available to maximize the fun. I started fly fishing last September and just had a ton of fun today trying to do some single handed Skagit casts with my #7 rod. The fly I used was sure not intended to attract any fish as that would interfere with my casting practice.

Spey casting is so beautiful..but if you’re two handed over head casting in the surf throwing a 4/0 I generally just wait on the back cast and my hands following back as well creating no slack what’s so ever. Otherwise it’s game over. I also wait and do it two times to create higher line speed if that makes any sense. I’m def going to get a Spey set up and tinker at my local rivers awesome video

Gotta keep the skills sharp man, practice is required. And if you’re new and just out practicing take the hook off. Safety first.

Looks like single hand rod would suffice just fine in that creek. Spey rods are fun tho.. I like using them in really big water

I have yet to jump into the Spey world. I think I will soon. Likely my first foray will be on Puget Sound beaches for sea run cutthroat when the tide is high and there's no room for a back cast. Great advice and nice fish!

Casting practice is essential when it comes to casting heavier flies, the best way also is to utilize continuous motion

I think there's a lot of room for improvement. Try to pratice Snap T, and perfect your anchor placement, your heavy set up is able to cast over 100 feet.

Anchor placement is off, line is too far out bring it closer to you, rod tip is way too high before the sweep you're losing energy, d loop not formed fully

Not skagit casting myself but my local shop said to expect to spend about 20 hours getting your regular fly casting down. 15 - 20 minutes at a time on the front lawn gonna take a while!

First, it is a nice fish. Congratulations. Second, you are right that the problem is the D-loop. (Your D-loops are not as dynamic and as aligned as you want yet. They are more like quick roll casts. Don't worry, we were all there and I think you are already 90% of the way. It is all more fun after this.) But, I think you chose a very ineffective style to practice (i.e. skagit casting) to perfect your D-loop. In Skagit style casting change of direction for the rod during casting is so drastic that it is never going to be intuitive why the D-loop is formed and aligned efficiently behind you. In other words, you will reach the performance ceiling very quickly and I think you are already there. I would start with no direction change switch casts. That will prefect your D-loop. As far as I see from the clip, switch casts would be enough where you fished. Later, you can do single-speys with slight direction change. Once you get proficient in these on both shoulders, you will realize that you do not need 99% of other casts let alone skagit casting. Skagit lines a very good and versatile but skagit casting is not. You also do not need all that splash.

My yard practice is the talk of the neighborhood. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I too have found that when I go from a dry fly to a streamer, I suck! But at least not as bad as I did last week. I love to Practice, practice, practice. Nice video. Thanks.

I came to this realization a few years back. Now when I see rod reviews, I just cringe at the recommendation they give for line grains. I think these companies/influencers/reps are a bit apprehensive to recommend something that goes against what the norm has been for so long, or they simply just don’t know any better. You nailed it man. Listen to the OG guys. They’ve figured it out. Ed Ward, Jerry French, just to name a couple. All fishing shorter rods and lighter heads. They have no problems sending their lines out to any fishable distance. Plus you gain all the sensitivity of a lighter line system, and when you do hook a fish, the fish is fighting you, not a jumper cable of a fly line. Thanks for posting this. Cheers!

Try to OPST commando head for single hand skagit

I fish in a lot of tight conditions, trees, high banks yadda yadda, and figured skagit heads were going to have me throwing darts, but I have issues. That said, I'm using 4/5wt 7'6" - 9'ft rods. I think I have a 250grain commando for my 5wt and a 200grain for my 4wt and I have a glass 4wt that I run a 175grain. You've inspired me to maybe down size my lines even further and SLOW DOWN!!! Any other tips for micro skagit on single handed short rods/glass would be much appreciated.

I’m just starting out. I love casting and playing fish a little longer, so off the bat euro nymphing seems less interesting to me. It’s clearly a successful method. But wow, reading the comments here is really showing me a lot of fly fisherman are arrogant and hypercritical of anyone who has a different opinion. I appreciate you for putting yours out there.

Im confused. No matter the technique you are always staring at something...indicator, fly, sighter, its all the same. I euro and still enjoy the destination plenty. Not to mention the beauty of each fish I catch (which is typically 10x with euro nymphing) You are one weird dude, but you do you! 😂

Give me a classic double taper for sure, I am now learning that all these WF variants are not the answer.

I have figured out how to make yarn indicators and leaders that are easily adjustable with no leader kink...inline all the way. You use macrame yarn (same as Dorsey, but you fuse it), melt and squash a base, melt a pin hole in that newly formed tab, put it on your leader (a section of straight mono). Nail knot Dacron 30# stops above and below using a nail knot tool. Super light...lands like a parachute. Hope you get the idea. i've made a vid on how to do this. I also dress them with silicone grease, and they float forever. Won't work with a tapered leader, but I always build my own. May sound complicated, but it isn't...just yarn, mono, and Dacron for the whole thing. Need a lighter and pliers but I carry those anyway.

This is what I have been advocating all along. You can even go lower in weight. The more one gets into it, the more the case for lighter rod and lighter lines. This is the reason designing your own lines and heads are super important. It takes the understanding of the line design to a new level. There are literarily dirt-cheap lines online from abroad one can cut and play. Short heads are good for close to bank fishing. I can shoot a 26 ft system (14ft of 240grain head + 12 ft of 70 grain versileader) above 85ft with a 10ft 4wt switch rod from under a tree. I do not even cast regular casts with my single hand rods anymore, I have my own spey lines for them too. Always go lighter in rod and line.
