I just ordered a 10 piece bank of shells in this exact kit (AHM - natural finish). All the same sizes as yours except I got a 22x18 instead of the 18x14. With the adition of a 18x16, 8x7, and 13x9. I'm Coming from a maple custom kit I bought new in 1995, and I was originally going to go a different direction since I had the yamaha maple thing already. I was REALLY close to choosing the recording customs instead of these. However - I did a ton of research and ultimately wound up ordering these. I can't wait to get them!
That's super exciting! It's pretty hard to beat these drums against anything else; even Yamaha's other lines. Thanks for watching!
I also have cymbals modified by Timothy Roberts. He is PHENOMENAL!!! He did what is now my favorite pair of hi hats, and some old As. Love his work!!!
@@brent3760 he’s giving the big companies a run for their money! Glad he’s been able to help you out with some cymbals. Thanks for watching!
The Manhattan 20" has a steep/high profile. Interesting that the 18 is a lower profile.
@@brent3760 I’ve never seen a 20” in person so I can’t compare. But compared to some of the other cymbals I have this one seemed lower. Thanks for watching!
The vintage A is my fav of the bunch
@@brent3760 I really like that one too. Unfortunately I sold it a while ago. Thanks for watching!
Every Gretsch kit I have owned has sounded great, the shells absolutely sing…..
I agree! Even their affordable lines sound great. I ended up selling the Natal because the Gretsch sounded just as good and was way less weight. Also white marine pearl is pretty classy!
I like to Hi hats they look like 15s
I love the sound of your kit. It's so organic. Congratulations!
@@loko306 I try to keep the drums as natural as I can! Thanks for the kind words!
Hey Austin, awesome video! What sticks are you using for this demo?
@@zach_dewey I’m using the Vic Firth Peter Erskine Big Band stick. Thanks for watching!
your playing is fantastic. came for the cymbals but stayed for that feel, thanks for the showcase.

You're missing out on the best ride Bosphorus Master vintage.. you would sell off some of your others.
@@sparks3423 those are fantastic rides! Not quite a sound I like for myself. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed Austin, nice collection of cymbals. Regarding the 20 K Con being labeled medium, I was told once or remember reading somewhere, it may have been labeled medium because of the cup/bell size. Don't know if that's true, just wanted to pass along. I'm a 67 yr old 2nd generation jazzer. My main ride for years was a Mid 50's 22 of my Dad's. Used it for years starting out and even into college then on the road in the lat 70's & 80's. Got worried it might get damaged or stolen, so retired it about 25 yrs ago. I would like to recommend you check out made by James Waples of Sydney Australia aka PUG Cymbals. A 20 inch ride that has become my new favorite. Continued success. keep swinging the tunes, and all good things!!!
Oh wanted to ask about the hi hats? 16? What flavor? (brand)
That makes sense! I imagine it's more about the design than the weight with those cymbals. I've had a few 50's ride cymbals and they are wonderful. I've seen some PUG cymbals too and they sound fantastic! The hihats in this video are Bosphorus 14" Masters. Thanks for watching!
It's Mozambique

Do you have a little Yamaha black pillow on the bass drum?

Finally I found a video of these drums tuned for jazz played by a good jazz drummer! This is my dreamkit
@@JaxonHaze glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
In my opinion, you are wrong. The reason your arms get tired really quick when turning your wrist for singles is because you are weak. By relying on rebound and finger pulls for singles, you are just delaying the needed development of wrist strength and an all hand grip.
Don’t sleep on the Paiste 602s! They are ear meltingly good!
They definitely are!
Great playing and fantastic kit!
Thank you for watching!
Eargasm!
Another great video. Love your playing
Awesome dude!
You are a great jazz drummer 😊
Nice playing 😎
Thank you for watching!
Nice video. I’ve got a 22’’ Constantinople Renaissance and I love it. It’s a very versatile cymbal.
They’re wonderful! It’s my go to funk/pop ride but works great for jazz. Thanks for watching!
The Tyranny of Rebound. This is what I tell myself after years of not developing, strengthening and gaining flexibility in my wrists. Why, because I thought rebound was the way. It's not. It fools one into thinking one has chops and mis-directs the drummer into a dead end. Now that I written this I do believe doubles-rebound is necessary for a well rounded vocabulary but it's a side dish. Tony Williams was right in the 1983 Zildjian day drum clinic and I didn't Believe It until I spent months working on my wrists and finally making some progress.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! they are very informative and help full.
Thank you for taking the time to watch them! I really appreciate it!
I have a 22 rennaissance as well. I wasn’t keen on the clang. I hammered and lathed it so it’s more trashy. Went from just under 2600 to 2350. I also raised the clusters and polished them. I got it to where I wanted it. It sounded great as it was but definitely don’t suit me.
That's really cool! The renaissance are kinda odd being as heavy as they are. I pretty much exclusively use mine for more pop/rock/funk gigs or if I was playing with a big band. Otherwise it tends to feel a little heavy for small group playing. Thanks for commenting and watching!
@@austinhass2638 They did make a few lighter ones that you might be able to dig up on TH-cam.
@@austinhass2638 th-cam.com/video/n9CZrzxVVOc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Aw6JFTs0rsKWoDIS
@@bernardrooney105 I have played some of the lighter ones and they’re great! If I could justify owning multiple of the same ride I would 😅
Fine demo and playing. Surprised by the Istanbul Mehmet Legend Dry Ride 22”. Warm and clear at the same time.
I love that cymbal as well. Very unique sounding and controlled at lower dynamics. It’s a pretty affordable cymbal too! Thank you for the kind words and watching!
Beautiful..... So well played 😊
Thank you for listening!
Woooooo!
Thanks my man!
I have a question. My weak hand is my left so when im trying to do finger control with my left i feel my forearm tensing up. My right forearm never tenses up. Do you why thats happening?
@@pearldrumspaiste Unfortunately without seeing you play it's hard to know what could be causing that. My first guess would be check that you are not gripping your fulcrum too hard. This can cause a lot of forearm tension. Hope this helps!
When I practiced playing along to my favorite songs I'd just do all fills with doubles and add doubles even on straight grooves. Make it fun but stay dedicated to the routine. I also would spend 15 minutes every session just working my hands around the drums and cymbals with rudiments. My tendency was to get so fixated on my feet and foot hand combos that I forgot how effective the hands are. I could pull off alot of fills that didn't require that facility of rudimental drumming but missed out on what the great hero's of mine were doing because they were so proficient with rudiments and applied them creatively. Practice smarter not harder but have fun always.
Agreed! I think a healthy balance of both hand centered fills and incorporating the foot leads to really creative vocabulary. Thanks for watching!
Hi Austin, as this is an older version of this pad how has the brush surface held up? I have seen a few people say that it tends to warp over time. Thanks
Great question! Mine has mildly warped but still sits pretty flat on the pad after 4 years of use. Both sides are playable so you can flip it when one side warps too much and it’ll flatten back out. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Imho he's talking top much...
And that’s why there are time stamps so you can skip straight to the playing. Thanks!
Without a doubt, my favorite cymbal on here is the one you had re-lathed. Gorgeous sounds coming out of that thing.
Glad you dig it! It's a very unique cymbal and I really enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
Super off-topic here, but what would you recommend as essential listening for someone who's more "jazz adjacent"? My entry point to jazz was Dave Weckl, back in the early 90's, and I never really made the transition in to, like, bebop or even straight-ahead in general. I've gotten in to a fair amount of big-band stuff, but really never "bonded" with the whole Blakey, Elvin and Max Roach thing. How do I migrate from fusion to "real" jazz?
That's a great question! For me Philly Joe Jones was always a big hero. His phrasing, solo vocabulary, and swing were mesmerizing. A great album where this is all displayed is Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section. Another drummer that got me excited was Jeff Hamilton. He has his own trio and big band but I really like his work with the Ray Brown Trio. 3 Dimensional is a great record to check out. Other than that if you can go see live jazz in your area thats an even better way to immerse yourself and catch the bug. Hope this helps!
@Austin Hass Hi very interesting, indeed Jeff Hamilton is a giant. I really really also like Andre Ceccarelli (Yamaha drummer, was the drummer for Sylvain Luc trio unfortunately Sylvain is from another world today.) Andre Ceccarelli (78 yo) he is still playing like if he was young. Incredible drumming, musicality and specific touch on the drum. You can really enjoy his drumming on TH-cam with this amazing live, Andre Ceccarelli really goes crazy on this 1 hour live very polyvalent and so magical: (oh yeah, he play exactly on the Yamaha hybrid absolute maple too on this one same color and same sizes.) m.th-cam.com/video/Hu9XYk5L_-4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUmQW5kcmUgY2VjY2FyZWxsaSBzeWx2YWluIGx1YyBib3VlIG5vdGU%3D
@Austin Hass Also I strongly recommend listening to Sylvain Luc's album "organic" (available everywhere on Deezer, Apple Music, Spotify and TH-cam). This album is astonishing, with of course André Ceccarelli (78 years old) on drums. At 78 years old, playing like that is truly exceptional. Another extraterrestrial haha...
Hey Ryan, I really recommend Sylvain Luc (French monster guitarist) and Andre Ceccarelli (78 yo drummer) . Unbelievable drummer!!! There is a fantastic album: Sylvain luc "organic". Also I recommend humbly to watch this live: 1) Sylvain Luc trio: m.th-cam.com/video/4YwKYSdi-H0/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUmQW5kcmUgY2VjY2FyZWxsaSBzeWx2YWluIGx1YyBib3VlIG5vdGU%3D 2) another Luc's concert m.th-cam.com/video/Hu9XYk5L_-4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUmQW5kcmUgY2VjY2FyZWxsaSBzeWx2YWluIGx1YyBib3VlIG5vdGU%3D
@Austin Hass Here's an awesome jazz concert : Sylvain Luc, Andre Ceccarelli and Jaffet: m.th-cam.com/video/4YwKYSdi-H0/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUlQW5kcmUgY2VjY2FyZWxsaSBzeWx2YWluIGx1YyB0cmlvIHN1ZA%3D%3D Ps: Andre Ceccarelli is unbelievable at 78 yo playing like this. Sylvain luc was unbelievable too. But there is a good one from the la note bleue club : m.th-cam.com/video/Hu9XYk5L_-4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUmQW5kcmUgY2VjY2FyZWxsaSBzeWx2YWluIGx1YyBib3VlIG5vdGU%3D (Andre Ceccarelli goes crazy on this live, really crazy, probably not from the beginning but the more we listen to the live and the more he goes crazy in the drumming haha)
You should try some KCons , they are really nice.
I have a few now and I like then a lot!
had no idea a flat a custom existed. that's very cool.

Thank you for the kind words!
No idea what that first one is. Never seen a spizzichino with that ink stamp, maybe a fake or a rarely used label
I’m definitely not trying to claim that the Spizz is a genuine Spizzachino. From what I’ve read there might be some connection. Hoping some folks who know more can comment and clear the air on this! Thanks for watching!
