Everyday pencil case tour 2024/25! Prepare yourself for art supply rambling
Touring my everyday essentials sketching pencil case. Woo that's a mouthful!
I'm embracing the hibernation time of year between Christmas and New Years by sharing this art supplies tour as a cosy chat complete with dressing gown and tea ☕ There are some sketching classics for me, and also a few new additions to the kit for 2024. The main goal of this pencil case is to have some variety while reducing decision paralysis and any roadblocks to drawing. Get your sketchbook or drawing tablet out and squeeze in some drawing time while I ramble about art supplies!

How I incorporate traditional art into digital illustration
มุมมอง 19114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Greetings 🌜 I absolutely love the feeling of pencils and pens on paper, and it's a part of the art process that brings me a lot of joy. Today I'm going to take you through how I incorporate my love of traditional drawing into my digital illustration process. Both by incorporating traditional elements into the process, but also by considering how parts of the digital process can reflect things I...

Welcome to another video where I put ink and paint on paper. Grab your favourite art supplies and join me for some creative time ☕✨ Yes I finally decided on the last colour for this palette, yay! It fits my current painting needs so well, I'm surprised I didn't go with it from the start haha. Today I'm illustrating a raven flying free, starting to untangle a ribbon and string. มุมมอง 1692 หลายเดือนก่อน
Let's take a look at one of my oldest watercolour palettes, and see how I can change it to fit my current painting needs. I'll be using paint swatches and a test painting sketch to choose which pigments to switch out, and if I need to make any changes after that (spoilers, I do!) This palette needs to be able to handle the subjects I love to paint, such as animals, characters, and fantastical c...

Painting with samples? Let's see how this goes!
มุมมอง 1473 หลายเดือนก่อน
Wooo I managed to fit one illustration in with these samples finally. Yay! This illustration was to help me test out watercolour paint sample dots from Da Vinci Paints. I chose a lioness since my typical palette for African big cats involves multiple commonly used colours for me. Namely yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, and ultramarine blue. 🍂TIMESTAMPS🍂 00:00 - Paints I'm using 02:13 - ...

Today I'm sharing an art haul with a twist: I finally have an art room/studio! 🥹 All the supplies here are to help me build up a stock of illustrating essentials. Especially since I'll be moving (eventually, more on that in the video 🙃) and I won't be able to bring all of my art supplies over. For the present moment though, I have already been using these supplies in my art practice over summer...

Does a kneaded eraser ever lose its sticky kneadableness? (if that makes sense) Do you prefer the stick or kneaded erasers? Love how organized it is. I've got a pouch full of pencil stubs I've accumulated over 15 years 😅
I don't think so but it can get all dirty and u eventually have to replace it
They change texture very slightly once they start to get overloaded with graphite, but that can take quite a long time. I like both for different reasons. The kneaded eraser gives me more control over how much graphite I do or don't lift away, but the stick erasers are more efficient when I know I just want to get rid of all the graphite in an area.
Yours is so tidy! Meanwhile my pencil case is just full of a bunch of random HB pencils and ballpoint pens I've accumulated over the years haha
That's what my wooden pencil case looks like! 🫣 Trying to simplify and organise the everyday kit has helped me get to sketching quickly, but for the rest of how I store my supplies it's still quite chaotic lol
The contrary works too. Print a digital artwork and use them with transfert methods on a canvas then paintover it. Can be an inceptive result of trad to digi to trad. For example you might like an accurate guideline for a painting, like geometric shapes or just something that was challenging to do traditionnally on first hand. Then you digitalise your lineart, work on complex shapes to make then perfect, transfert them back on canvas (Gelli plate, transfert medium) and paint over, then take a professionnal photo and do prints of them so you now have an original (trad/digi project) and some prints on the side.
Its nice to do an inked lineart and do an abstract set painting for underpainting, background, textures or accents, then continue on photoshop or procreate. Depended on the desired result, it may be useless to do an inked lineart for more realistic illustration. Still, I'm with you, its really nice to work on paper. Also, I like to work in public setting: a cafe or park even at the bar. Its more intuitive and easy to bring a sketchbook and a pen around. Digital art always felt more reclusive to me, but maybe I should try an IPad (Im on Cintiq 13hd, not a standalone).
Thanks for sharing your experience. Interesting about digital art feeling reclusive to you. It's not something I considered before, but now I can totally see it.
Wow, don't stop doing your draws, you gonna be so good in once days ❤
Thank you for the encouragement! ☺️💜
That's.... gorgeous ❤
Thank you! 😊
Price
Sketchbook name
Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbooks vary in price depending on where you live and the stores available. The 13 by 21 cm (8.3 by 5.1 in) size can be £6 to £8 in the UK and for the US on Blick it is currently $7.42.
So cute so beautiful ❤
Well if this aint the neatest thing I seen today ... I dont know what is
Thank you, that's so sweet 😊 Happy new year!
this is such a stunning design, I love it ☺
Thank you 💜 Joining community collabs really opened up my inspirations to new sources!
This was interesting. I didn't know you used Clip Studio too, as the algorithm has mainly recommended your sketchbook videos to me lately. I'm not an artist (I wish!) but I'm definitely an art enjoyer and teaching myself pencil and pen sketching as well as watercolours (landscapes, birds and so on but not people bc i find them too scary for now) off TH-cam recently, everyday when I get home from work. I don't have Clip Studio but maybe I'll try it out someday though the layout and colouring process on it feels intimidating from what little I've seen in videos. How many years have you been practising traditional and digital art? I've only used Procreate once on a friends laptop and the undo button was certainly a fun feature!
There are a lot of options out there for digital now, which is nice! In my experience there's a learning curve to any software, but that can be an exciting thing to consider too. I started using Clip Studio in 2022. I'd say I started "seriously" learning art as a whole in 2021, but I have enjoyed drawing since I was little. I remember how I felt as a beginner, how intimidating everything felt, and how easy it was to get lost in things. Some of the most important skills and concepts beyond anything else I've learnt so far have been developing patience with myself, and comparing myself with my own progress (every so often laying out everything I've made chronologically and then considering what I enjoyed, what materials/subjects I liked, where I have improved, what I could work on next, etc) helped me a lot. Just as it can be inspiring, it can also be incredibly easy to get lost in what other people's progress or art is like, so the latter really helped me "reset" and re-center myself as I built my self confidence in art more. As individuals we all have different things that will help us though, and I always encourage people to find what works for them! From one artist to another, have fun and keep finding the joy in it :)
@@daenafae Thank you for the encouragement! I'm actually a physics grad student by training, but my real ambition in life is to be as well rounded as possible because I have so many interests and art is a big one. I've kept a folder of my watercolour works the past few months and I can definitely see the progress! It's very heartening. I know everyone says to use 100% cotton paper but the price makes me too scared to paint freely so I mostly stick with 25-30% cotton or even just wood pulp paper because I'm able to paint more freely on it, even if the paper dries out much faster and doesn't blend as easily. The first few times I painted birds I traced their outlines but I'm trying to learn to draw them from scratch now.
I love veiled lady mushrooms, they're so spooky looking! And your human design for it is so pretty! I like to sketch traditionally too when I can, it saves me so much time trying to work it out digitally (where more often than not I get stuck if an 'ctrl + z' loop lol)
Thank you! That's interesting to hear about the ctrl + z loop, and how traditional sketching helps you with that. Oftentimes people assume the opposite in that digital is supposed to speed things up. Yet what we may need as an individual can be quite different!
Thanks for sharing this, was awesome to watch! I do a similar thing myself, I love sketching things out physically (especially with graphite, for the value control)
There's just nothing like graphite on paper 🥹 I agree about the value control too! The transitions, smooth gradients, and textures come much more naturally to me that way
This is the best review of ANYTHING I've ever seen 😭 thank you for being so thorough!!!!!
You're welcome! I appreciate you for saying this because it took a lot of planning 🥹
my dream is for Talens to make bigger square sketchbooks (like A4 with the bottom chopped off)
I'd love a larger square format too! That size has been growing on me lately
I prefer paper with some tooth, but I’ve learned to enjoy these sketchbooks for things like pen. I really prefer some texture when I use pencil, and these aren’t ideal for watercolor, of course. They’re pretty good for my little cute pen doodles, though.
Just found your channel and I’m really enjoying your videos! Keep up the good work :D
Welcome! Thank you for cheering me on 💜
this is so pretty!!
Thank you Chantelle! Toned sketchbooks are a real treat to draw on ☺️
I want a sketchbook that works well with markers and watercolours and pencil because im slow and i dont want to use more than one ina time so i really dont know what to get my current sketchbook is almost finished
this is brilliant, watched and enjoyed till the end ☺☺
Thank you Chantelle! This was a really fun illustration from start to finish 💜
Love the raven, you painted it beautifully with so much love and care.
Thank you Lana! Painting this really reminded me how much I loved prussian blue years ago
A brilliant and detailed video, thank you so much for sharing
Oil paints...? Is there any sketchbooks for oil paints? 😭
I've seen some people on TH-cam seal and prime the paper of sketchbooks for oil painting. I haven't tried it myself though.
@daenafae Nice because I never see any oil painting books sold in stores? It makes no sense tbh, I'll check it out thx
Hi, i've been looking around at swatch videos to decide between getting da vinci yellow and getting hansa yellow medium. The website says that DVY is semi transparent and HYM is transparent, but a lot of swatches seem to show that DVY is more transparent. I want a transparent yellow; which of the two would you say is more transparent?
Hello 👋 The swatches and paint samples are currently an ocean away from me so I'm working off of memory, sorry! I found that both were quite similar, and I found the DVY transparent enough at the time that I listed it as a pigment to pick up in the future. Denise Soden at InLiquidColor used to use DVY a lot about three years ago so you may find some videos where she paints with it for finished pieces around that time, which would give you a better idea of how it looks in practice.
FYI about the Moonglow - I'm sure you know that it's not lightfast; but its very easy to mix your own lightfast version! And since you are already doing that for some of your preferred blacks & purples, I assume you're more likely to give this a go. These are all using Daniel Smith watercolors, of course, and the formula goes like this : 50% Viridian + 25% French Ultramarine + 25% Quinacridone Coral. If you should prefer more of a lighter, greenish-blue-y dominant look when it seperates, then add a tad bit more Viridian. If you should prefer more of an intense blue-y shadow in the seperation, add a tad more French Ultramarine. If you like and prefer more of a violet-&-pink dominant effect in the seperation, add a bit more of the Quinacridone Coral. Enjoy!
Thank you for the recipe! 💜 I'll give it a go once I've used up the last my of Moonglow.
Wonderful video, love bisons and this wasp side story was captivating! :D
Haha I'm glad you enjoyed it! The wasp eventually made it outside 😭
@@daenafae Thanks for the follow up, now the side story has an ending :D
Thank you for watching me ramble about pigments and paint a bison calf 🦬 (when editing I noticed I said buffalo a few times when I meant to say bison, but I didn't have the energy to redo the voiceover so enjoy the brain fluff ups haha) The final changes to the palette, including the last colour change will be in a future video :) What have you been up to recently?
Thanks so much, I'm playing today with various inks in my new sketchbook. I hope Sleep Token returns to Las Vegas as we missed the show this year!
Good luck with tickets when Sleep Token next visit Las Vegas! We managed to luck out on tickets for the UK tour this month right before they sold out. I couldn't believe it haha
I watched a lot about this sketchbook and thanks to you you made the perfect one 😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Kinda wish you had shown us the backs of pages
My most recent "an hour in my sketchbook" video was done entirely on a back page, and I have two full tour videos of my older art creation sketchbooks. The teal would have the most media variety. Hope that helps 💜
Those little pots of color are such a great idea 😊.
Thank you 💜 They've still been handy in my art practice to this day
Some of my best drawing sessions have been with just a pencil and my sketchbook.
It's a comforting classic :D
Thanks for reminding me to pick up a sketchbook and draw some spooky critters :)
Any time! Have fun with the spooks 🎃👻
Amazing, your inspiring, love these complete videos, watching from start to finish. ❤❤❤
Thank you 💜 I'm glad there are people out there that like the longer sketchbook format!
Thanks for the recommendations, I knew a few but many websites are new to me. Right now I'm mainly using pinterest but I'm at a point where I have to scoll a lot or use new searching words to find new suitable portraits pictures for my practice 😅
I'm glad it was helpful to you! It's easy to get stuck in a circle with Pinterest, as valuable as it can be
Hi, I wanted to comment before I forgot. I use the Kuretake brush pen (the brown handle (fine tip), its kinda weird to find on amazon, like I typed it in but searched a while to find it, but if your interested i can send you the link I found :P I had bought it in store) and this one does not seem to bleed through the pages of the Talens. I just opened up and started using a brand new Talens today, as I am replacing my moleskin. I can no longer use the Moleskin brand as they've added their Manifesto in the first pages and last pages of the sketchbook, which I find very inappropriate and really disappointing... like who wants that in their sketchbook?!? Anyways, thank you for your video!
Ooo thank you for letting me know! Feel free to link it if possible. That's such a shame about Moleskin 😔 it was fine with just the little leaflet
Good resources, a fine addition to my collection *insert general grievous chuckle*
Haha I'm happy to have helped add to it for you
Thanks for the recommendations! I LOVE JookPub and Faestock, their stuff is great! Love how the drawing turned out btw! My recs are AdorkaStock (free + paid), ArtReferenceSource (paid), ThePoseArchives (free + paid), Null-Entity (free + paid), Jagged-Eye (free + paid) and KingCholera (free) :)
I'd love the animal references and environmental references.
Thanks for letting me know! I'll gather up a list ☺️
Cream paper is my favorite and solely because of highlights. You never highlight white, always have to be an off color and this is perfect for the srt i wanna make.
That's very true, thanks for sharing your experience!
So cool, I've always wondered if dot cards would last long enough for a piece so this was fun to see!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was a fun little challenge
This looks so good, such a cute illustration ☺☺
Thank you! It was a fun process I'm going to use in some more complex illustrations in the future
she da best.
Thank you 🥹💜
This has been infinitely helpful, not only in putting together my own beginner watercolor palette, but also in how i understand color mixing! Thank you!
You're welcome! Have fun with creating a palette for yourself 💜
Love to listen to your experiences with aquaboard. I have some (for quite a while - 2 - 3 years) and so hesitating to start using it but the more info I take in, the more secure I feel to paint on it. Problem solving is what I like to see in video's. And of course the lovely outcome, the flowers from your bouquet so nicely painted.
I hope the experiences with aquaboard from me and others help you! Being able to pull from the collective knowledge of art communities can be so valuable. I've seen some people use gouache on this surface with great effect, so that may be a future adventure for myself.
I would absolutely do a Fungi collab if you still want to paint that dryad's saddle sometime ;) Beautiful painting, great job adjusting to the board's weird behaviour.
I'd love that! Maybe it could be an autumn/fall collab 🤔
The unpredictability of watercolour is both a gift and a curse, you made it work though so good job! Coconut is an adorable cat name btw omg
Thank you! It's what brings me back to watercolour every time. Coconut is both adorable and a menace 😂
This looks fantastic, love how soft they are ☺☺
Thank you Chantelle! I always love painting white or black objects, you can find so much colour variation within them
