Adolph Ochs, New York Times Publisher, honored in Market Square (2022)
On a windy September day in 2022 Knoxville Mayor Indya McKinnon and Knoxville historian Jack Neely dedicated a bronze plaque just across from the famous "Dolly" mural in Market Square downtown to longtime New York Times Publisher Adolph Ochs.
Adolph Ochs began his career in newspapers at age 11 working as an apprentice to William Rule, editor of the Knoxville Chronicle in the 1870s. At 19 Ochs borrowed $250 from his family and bought a controlling interest in the Chattanooga Times. In 1896, at the age of 38 Adolph Ochs borrowed $75,000 and bought a controlling interest in The New York Times.

5 years ago I visited Lucy Street off of Wellington in South Memphis and discovered Aretha Franklin's house where she was born. It was in deplorable condition. Why did it take so long for someone to buy the property that would obviously return the investment very quickly. Sad. The neglect and disregard I've experienced and witnessed as a tenant at Isabella Towers, one of Knoxville's many affordable housing projects around the city, can be seen elsewhere. One example that comes readily to mind is the Giffin-McDonald house at Ijams Nature Center south of the city. A once beautiful family home given to Ijams in 2004 is today little more than a storage shed.

Who was responsible for Elvis' addiction (himself of course) isn't the point. The point about the book is that NO ONE publicly humiliates their friend in order to "help" him. They admitted they did it out of spite, not love. It made Elvis' final days very traumatic. They were despicable and disgusting!! (You don't have to have been "there" to know that; it's common sense and decency.). How spa guy can defend them is absurd. And stop trying to use the Bible to justify their actions. They were spiteful in writing the book, and that's not Christian. SG is making me sick in this interview.

Joe Esposito and Billy smith mentioned how that book was heavy on Elvis mind ( Joe even said it was one reason for his downfall in 1977). I definitely believe it. That and Pricilla leaving him caused him tremendous pain. Which caused him to use more drugs. Sonny and red were awful to do that. ( Dave was new he was nothing to Elvis )

They should not have written the book after they were fired by Elvis. It looks like revenge. If they loved him so much they should have written the book before they were sacked. All hypocrites. They loved their wage packets more than Elvis. They never stood up to him, never criticised him, they agreed to everything he said. The drugs and and his lifestyle hastened his death.

Spa Guy, I will tell anyone, if you want to hear the truth about Elvis Aaron Presley, it will be you! You may had it wrong sometimes (not often), but that is human nature. I thought for a long time Elvis' first (and) only unprofessional recording was for his mother's birthday, but heard he left the record at his friend's house, and his mother never saw it or heard it. I can see Elvis was not that pleased with it, he was a perfectionist in the studio recording (why his recordings turned out like they did). I admire very much that you want to tell, and get the truth about Elvis and his life (talking with people who knew him). I did not know, Dean, Dr. Nick's son, was real close with him. I do know the last Hawaii vacation Elvis took, his son was along on the trip too . I learned more about you, you were 12 years old when Elvis died. I learned how you became to do what you do (were born to do it). I did not know you are a musician, singer, performed on stage, and recorded too. I learned why you started out as the Spa Guy too. It was wonderful for it to come to you to go past Graceland, and what had to do with Elvis too. I did not know for quite awhile Vernon and Dee had a house behind Elvis' property. There was the pizza restaurant that Elvis liked too. It can go on and on. I thank you for what you do, the admiration and respect you have for Elvis, his family, and friends. A friend, her son, and I were at Opryland on August 16, 1977. I needed to go to the restroom, and two other young women were in there too. One said to the other one, she heard Elvis had died. I thought, that is a rumor. When I got home that night, I learned it was not a rumor, in shock, and very sad. It will be to my last day, but wonderful the recordings we can listen to (and other). I bought the magazines on Elvis after his death, and still have those (books too). I stiill have all the vinyl I bought of his, cassettes, and disc too. If I had known Elvis, would want to know him mostly as the Tupelo, MS/Memphis, TN boy at home, and like a little sister. I was 27 years old when he died, and been a fan since 1959 (became more aware of him at age 9). ❤From A Nashville Girl❤ (June 24, 2024)
