Trim Router Sled vs Full-Size Router Sled - What's the Difference? Plus Tips & Tricks
We just launched our Full-Size Router Sled Kits to go along with our Trim Router Sled Kits, but we wanted to talk about some of the differences, some similarities, AND some tips & tricks.
Slab flattening jigs and sleds are a very popular item to flatten large slabs. Problem is most hobbyist woodworkers and DIYers don't have large machinery to flatten their beautiful rough sawn slabs.
We offer sled kits to be used with your trim router or your full-size router. We explain more in this video.

This is great!
What is the spec on that router bit? I'm working with some insanely hard wood here and it's so easy to damage if the bit is not in perfect condition.
I am thinking of buying the full size starter kit. Once I have the full size starter kit, can I, then, just buy the trim router kit only? I want to make the router sled dual duty.
This video and subscription warrant a lot more support than they are getting. The video very nicely explains the assembly. And, the video includes some very useful perspectives, such as the bench dog assembly under the router and the commentary on the wood chips. Also, details about assembly order (such as what to tighten, when) are appreciated. Well done!
Blues clues
Blue skidoo, we can too!
Perfect table! Im going to try it out 👍
Any chance you will add a hose attachment for dust collection?
I have the same trim router boss, but I don't see that option... Did you drill the holes yourself??
So cool!! I would have loved to hear you talk about how you did it!
Thank you for the feedback. I agree, and I'm working on being more comfortable talking through my videos. Thanks for watching
Are you offering blanks if we do drill our own? That looks like your new Milwaukee base plate
Yes, we're offering blanks now so you can drill your own mounting holes. In fact, if you search "blank" on our website you'll see all the products we offer blanks for. More coming soon.
Very helpful!
🎉🎉
I was looking at this on your website but there's no mention there of the alignment pin. What exactly is the idea behind that?
Where is the price list??
You can click on Shop in the video or visit our website. Visit our channel for all the links.
Sweet!!
Thanks!
🔥🔥🔥
👊
Would you sell just the three acrylic pieces separately? Does the blank router plate have the pre drilled holes for the bearings? Thanks, Bob McRae
Wow look at all the gadgets he has
Beautiful maid love you way of making it ❤
Love the product, I do own the trim router set up, is there a way to use the 20mm bars on the 16mm horizontal bars? I would like to get the full size router set up to use in conjunction with the trim router
Hey Joe, we're working on a simple system so you can use a combination of 20mm and 16mm rods/rails. We're not ready to release it, but hopefully we will in the next month or so. Shoot me an email and we can chat some more.
Awesome video! Been wanting to make a stand-alone router table for some time now! Will definitely be picking one of these up! Thanks Kevin!
Thank you for watching! Definitely let me know if you have any questions, happy to help.
Are the holes on all bearings etc the same so that they match up with your parts?
Awesome video, and great product development and execution!!!! Like to see the video that also shows cutting out the center without using a plunge base as many building this probably will not have one.
Thank you for watching! That is a great point. I plan on making another router table--I may make another video and show that step instead. Thank you for the feedback.
your website doesn't give the option to ship it to the South Korea, is that possible? Currently shipping options only appear to ship to Canada and the United States. Also, I hope the Festool 22000 router option is also provided.
Great information and well presented. Loved learning about the hot melt glue technique.
Thanks for watching. Yeah for large slabs (and even smaller boards) I found hot glue works great!
Just another thought, Amazon has hundreds of vendors to buy the rods and rails. The question is, what vendor do you recommend buying the rods and rails? Or can you do that? thanks
They do have a ton of vendors. If you visit our info page we added some links to get you started. I'm not partial to any "brand" because the parts are all coming from manufacturers in China...for the most part. woodgrainjunkie.com/pages/router-sled I have ordered from Mssoomm and Vevor. No issues with their parts...at least the rails I have received.
I have a Ridgid 2401 but your router list shows 24012. Is there a difference between the two or do I need to make my router plate? Enjoy your videos.
It will fit the 2401. Ridgid (and other brands) will add a number or letters if it's part of a set or comes with some type of accessory. But it's the same router.
@@WoodGrainJunkie Thank you, you’ll see my order shortly. Thanks, Brent
UPDATE: We now have Full-Size Router Sled Kits available on our website. It's a very similar setup as this Trim Router version, BUT meant to be used with 20mm bearings and rails to support the added weight of the router. ADDITIONALLY, we are now including the Shaft Collars when you purchase any of the Essentials Kits (Trim Router or Full-Size version). woodgrainjunkie.com/products/full-size-router-sled-kit Pro tip: Sign up to our email list to get 10% off storewide.
Where is a outfit that make one that fits palm and standard routers. He sells the kit complete with the 4 rails needed in 60" and 48" cross. I was looking at his.I started to do a lot of slabs and cutting boards coming in the future His comes with a skitr around the cut area to collect the shavings very well
Could u make the pillows and maybe velvet up the insidd
As as been said, don't scrap hot glue, use alcohol to remove it cleanly. Hand sanitizer works too.
Giving this a shot on the next slab 👍
Add 3 stepoer motors and you have a cnc router
Very true! This is significantly cheaper tho
use denatured alcohol to take the hot glue off even easier.
I'm going to give that a shot next time. Thanks
where buy clamp
First, I realize this is a 4 year old video, but some praise, some criticism, then more praise. Please stick with me throughout my review. I hope to make something as beautiful, however, I can tell you are NOT a watch guy. Nobody wants a watch box without an exhibitionist top view. Glass or plexiglass glass would be preferred for the top instead of a closed container. You did not make a watch box, you made a box that just happens to be able to hold watches. There is actually a difference. Your selection of hinges just screwed onto the back is appalling. You made a gorgeous box, then slapped crap hinges flat on the back. No recess or anything. Please use some nice brass hidden hinges for future iterations. Same goes for that horrid clasp. Your thumbnail shows a full watch box with watch pillows and displayed watches. A “finished” project, yet, you never cover ANY of that info at all. Just a basic box build. For all the “you have all the tools” haters, eff them. Your vid is for a watch box, not a watch box with no tools… I always dispose those comments. Why do people watch these videos and NOT expect to need some (several) tools to complete a nice project. Idiots… FYI, Newton Makes posted a version of this a year ago. Did he modify your version? I don’t know, he did address almost all of my complaints though, so if you inspired him, job well done Sir. He does however sell a video series tutorial for $25 for his box. Maybe he owes you some royalties? Again, I don’t know. At the end of the day, it is just a box. Thanks for sharing the dimensions and the majority of your process. Matched, continuous grain for the win! I hope you are still making and creating projects and content. Great job, the only way we learn to get better is to keep learning. Thank you for the inspiration to try one on my own. I hope your client was happy with the results.
Please disreguard my last comment. You would think that a 75 year old retired engineer would know how to follow directions. apparently NOT. This thing is great!!! Thank you for the time you put into making it.
not a problem. I appreciate your support
Good stuff! I have the upgrade version and I'm putting it together now. My issue is the holes in the new long mounting plate do not align with the holes in the rail bearings? I can send a pic if you like. I have the essential kit for the Makita RT0701C. Order #1977.
Saw your updated comment 👍
На самом деле, план так себе. Даже при такой длине направляющих штанг у них будет наблюдаться прогиб из-за давления на фрезер руками.
Good show but I wondered if you can add a duplicator to one side away from handle. That will be your new addition to it.
What size of linear bearing did you use?
MSM linear bearing
Dude I don’t wanna sound like a jakas but you’re essentially selling glorified acrylic glass and 2 handles for 120 bucks. All of which you can find for under 25 bucks.
Can’t thank you enough for your product. I absolutely love it and it has saved me so much time and money to produce the products that I make. Again thanks for your help and I look forward to seeing more of your videos on TH-cam.
Thank you so much for the support and for the kind words. I'm glad the sled is working out for you.
Great job!
Thank you for watching!
Do you ship it to Brazil?
Very excited to build my sled - thanks so much for the details. Glad there doesn't seem to be any flex in the 16mm rods. I am also amazed there is enough power in a cordless router. Do you find battery gets depleted quickly? Might have to look into that as well. :)
How much ? All parts.
Do you have the dimensions for the boards used for your sled? Also rod lengths? I too have a small shop, and this would be perfect! Will be ordering the essential kit from you soon. Already ordered a router base plate for a mini router table. Excellent work!
Gucci. 🎉
