Hello, this is Matthias, the founder of UNIVERSE64. Maybe I should explain a little bit what and why I started UNIVERSE64. I started in 2018 with the idea that nobody was interested in. But I had a vision, a way to a new Online Network 8-Bit Future. Since then, I've been working year after year to bring that vision to reality. What can be seen on this TH-cam channel are more or less concept studies ("Best of C64 Games", "Game Intros", ...) what is possible, music training (my background music tracks I composed for the videos), and the progress of the UNIVERSE64 hardware and software (pcb boards and software development)

Back in the 80s: Atari XL 800 vs Commodore 64

Awesome
Holy crap! I can't believe the IIe is doing that music!
can you maybe share the sid file if you can? this is soo awesome!
the amstrad in the right hands was the better computer out of the 8 bits , shame it mostly got speccie ports
<3 amstrad cpc464 here. Awesome demo!
Found ... Bonzai - Bottom Demo (REU) - C64 @1:59
At 1:59 it's very funny. Does anyone know the name of this demo? The Commodore 64 surprises me again and again
What's that 3d Elite type game is it just a demo or game it's so impressive!
That was always my point. The C64 was really really good, but it wasn't something special. Sure, it did introduce some major improvements in Color and Memory management but it never really managed to beat Jay Miner's architecture.
Amazing, thanks for sharing.
A800 its an small amiga , very similar Diisplay Arquitecture Display List+Sprites + VM Bus , C64 Engineer Creates in fact the Atari ST , The 800-400 machines was created from Jay Minner the brain behind the Amiga , this is The Amiga 8 Bit Computer , and the ST was the C64 16Bit
Yes, I admired him. However, technically, he lead Amiga in the wrong direction. As visually stunning as the Amiga was then, the infamous Blitter became its greatest liability. Once touted as an asset, the bitmap model didn't scale and was quickly outpaced by other concepts - ironically Atari, Mac. Nevertheless fantastic work and designs.
ive been saying it since the 80s!... the CPC shits all over the C64... the only thing the C64 had going for it was the SID... the rest is utter crap
I personally prefer the AY and the 6128 Plus has DMA, so it's even better than the sid. Just listen to Bubble Quest's soundtrack, to mention just one example.
👍👍👍
Yeah but it's games where speccy is king
It can do a very nice colour clashing 😂
What is the game at 2:41?
Wooooow!!!!
Knocks the spots off a c64
gorgeous on the Atari and loads smoother and definitely the one to play. That said I loved my experience with it on the C64 and it plays the same regardless. Great game that I still play. Interestingly The Eidolon and Koronis Rift aren't as big of a jump in terms of speed difference with the Atari version being just a tad smoother instead of vastly more smooth. Koronis Rift is also rather pretty though on the Atari so there's good reason to play it there as well. Luckily each of these great games still played well on the C64 and I did always like it's realistic washed out tones. Going between the two is always fun
This machine is awesome. Do I hear real stereo? Wow!
The 800 is really amazing. Unfortunately it is a no go here in Europe, it never had a proper PAL version, don't even talk about a proper SCART output. So we have to do it with the sucking C64. I even think the Pokey sounds better than the SID.
Great !
Damn, this is amazing. I'm watching/listening, and in the first 30 seconds, I thought "Wow, this is like the C64 Demoscene stuff, but on a 2600" - and then I saw your direct nod to that at 0:39. I know I'm repeating myself, but, amazing stuff!
I know this will use an internal pi1541, but is the serial bus exposed for connections anywhere? Also is it a keyboard or mouse port on the bottom. Thanks
or is that the s-video
Right this is S-Video
...sehr interessant
Auf Basis eines Teensy 4.1 :-) Der Pico hat zu wenige Pins
Cool. Is there also one for the Floppy?
Not at this time. Primary goal is to include a lot more features for this new card via firmware.
So well done ... Can we write a program to create Binaural beats ?
Looks and sounds awesome, really like it. On the other hand, the first thing I would show anyone is the port of Pinball Dreams running on the CPC. Case closed :)
So how come 1st generation programmers back in the 80s couldn't generate this level of fidelity, smoothness and speed with their graphics, when the machine was new? It's as if you've 'unlocked' some level of capability that was hitherto hidden.... The hardware between then and now is the same, right?
You will find the same evolution on any other 8-bit machine. Over time, new tricks were discovered, the limitations and possibilities of the hardware was explored, documented and ultimately exploited, the power of cross-development made things (generating highly optimised code for the purpose) long time deemed unfeasible possible, the people themselves evolved (a lot of programmers in the 80s were teenagers) and learned new tricks, scenes influenced each others, ideas crossed platform boundaries. And possibly other things I forgot :)
A small Amiga
Same as original atari hardware. Incredible. A work of art. I'm a handheld collector. I follow this work and, if one day, Atari or MSX portables come out, I'll go for it. Maybe ZX Spectrum too. Are there plans for 16-bit computers as well, in the future? Would love some Amiga or Sharp 68k stuff too.
A handheld version has also been created, but will be redesigned :-)
Hard to believe this was technology from 1979. Nothing in the personal computer space even came close to the Atari until well into 1982 when Jack Tramiel's Commodore released the C64. Even afterwards, the Atari was arguably the better platform as a computer, with the C64 perhaps marginally better at playing video games - and I do mean marginally. A very fine testament to the forward-looking genius of Jay Miner, the system's lead architect, who famously went on the create the Amiga.
What can ZX Spectrum 8Bit Graphics and Sound? They really can... can.
Excellent 👍👌
I am loking for "tsound" / t-sound" Somr body knows?
Ok two very different beginnings. What's the second one?
There is a piece of artwork done on the C=64 of the Enterprises first meet up with Reliant in Star Trek II. The artwork was attached to the Star Trek II theme SID music file. I'm hoping it's out there somewhere on the internet. It was very well drawn.
Do you have any link or screenshot of it?
@@gpisic unfortunately I don't. That's why I'm hoping to one day find someone who does.
@@SchardtCinematic There is not much to go on, can you at least describe what there was seen on that artwork? Also there was a SID playing with the Star Trek II theme correct?
@@gpisic I already described it. In The Wrath of Khan. When Reliant and Enterprise are facing each of or the first time in the film
Because of the way graphic modes work and twice as fast CPU, Atari is better at 3D, but C64 usually wins in other genres. Something like Mayhem in Monsterland is impossible to make on Atari.

Actually not true. Crownland is a good example. The c64 had three minor advantages. More memory than the 800 later addressed. Wider sprites and split to 8 to start with and better features. A synth element in sound chip but atari could do 4 channel, even 5 with sound effects. Atari scrolling was usually smoother than c64 very silky smooth because cpu was faster. When you consider atari was a 1979 it was impressive. The mistake they made was not upgrading the sprite, memory and sound and exposing the technical details more with every machine sold. Promoting more skills to build would have helped this machine.
Wonderful! Will there be versions with onboard video ram as well?
Maybe later, first I have to create other Replicas
@@u64 Cool. By the way. What is that "startcart64"? Can't seem to find it anywere. At least Google think I'm looking for Starcraft (not)
This is the predecessor of the Raptor64 cartridge: th-cam.com/video/2DlVmdDTp5I/w-d-xo.html
@@u64 Nice! Always nice with more stuff for our belowed '64! I've build a 466 longboard clone (no MOS chips at all in it) and now I'm planning to do a shortboard too. The goal is not to use any original chips. With that SuperPLA it should be possible. Kawari works well on short boards too but only output longboard video specs so a modulator replacement which you "cross configure" (possible with most) video will be nice too - otherwise still perfectly useable just a tad too bright with stock modulator which I tried out in a vintage machine to see if Kawari works. Already ordered a SuperPLA and uSID. I'm excited to test and try them out - at least the uSID. It'll be a little while before the SuperPLA will be used as I'm currently gathering parts.
The u251715+64 MMU is working like in the 250466 board, so therefore no problems are expected here. I've been testing the Replica for 6 months.... no problems at all. The uSID64 is getting better with time, but I still have to optimize some things :-) At the moment it is the cheapest Stereo SID (Dual SID). A good base for the future.
The Atari has almost double the clock speed, which really helps. Try the C64 SuperCPU version of ROF.
The Atari 8 bit machines could do what were pipe dreams on the C64.
Nice work! Will it work with an ICM-20948 chip?
Thanks, no, because it has no Serial Port. For this you have to use a Microprosessor-Board with Serial Port and connect the ICM-20948 with the Microprosessor-Board (maybe a mini Pico Board).
@@u64 thanks. what imu are you using?
9DoF Razor IMU M0 (with USB/Serial Connection) SEN-14001
@@u64 Cool. Where can I find the imu vizualizer app?

Lucasfilm games took advantage of the Atari as much as they could and it shows. Not just this title but Koronis Rift, Ballblazer The Eidolon. When they switched to Lucas Art then they dropped the Atari 8bit completely. Keep in mind the A8 is the ancestor of the Amiga 1000 in some regard with similar architecture ideas. But like the Amiga, it is often a misunderstood machine.
