Sketches and drafts of songs and riffs I am working on. I welcome comments and feedback on what you're hearing and seeing!
I'm influenced by Jimmy Page, Mike Bloomfield, Boogaloo Joe Jones, and Grant Green on guitar. John Paul Jones and James Jamerson on bass. John Bonham on drums.
I've put up some of my tracks on ReverbNation so you can download them if you want to listen to them on an MP3 player: www.reverbnation.com/guitarjay

Vienna Sunset (Lo-Fi Instrumental)
Continuing to experiment with lofi-adjacent interpretations of songs. This is a straight ahead jazz piece transformed into something more modern. I think it retains a little bit of the Inspector Clouseau vibe of the original.

Last Dance in Halifax

Frank Zappa exhorted us to "make a jazz noise here", so I tried to do just that. Here's a brief original jazz composition (just a head). It was composed in a hotel room in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Enjoy! All music copyright 2023 Video clips of dancers courtesy of agus from Pixabay
Unicorn Catharsis
มุมมอง 1763 ปีที่แล้ว
Brothers and sisters, we're each lovely and unique like a beautiful unicorn. Many of us have been in various forms of lockdown and the glorious light at the end of the tunnel is shining brightly! We will emerge from our homes like cicadas emerging from the ground, and as we hug, dance, cavort, and frolic with one another again, we shall achieve catharsis!!! Special thanks to brother Chris Bende...

Here's a vintage style instrumental soul/r&b number to hopefully take you back to the carefree era of shag carpets, avocado-colored kitchen appliances, big stereo speakers, and kids playing outside all day until dinnertime. Groovy, man! Keep on truckin'! Online collaboration is the name of the game these days and I'm chuffed that the one-and-only Mike Sedgewick graced this track with a sweet so...

Drummer extraordinaire Mark Ansara recorded a short piece a few Thursdays ago as part of his Thursday Funk quarantine series. It knocked me out, so I thought I'd try a little jam over the groove. The results exceeded my expectations, which were so low (based on me, not on the drum track) that I didn't even bother tuning the bass or guitar before hitting "record"! Sorry for that. Anyways, here's...

Maybe the Mayans were a little off in their calendar and it's really 2020 when the world ends? Ooof, the way things are going, it sure seems like it. But, chin up, pull together, hang in there, we'll make it! Here's a little upbeat blues instrumental to hopefully lift your spirits during these trying times. Let's all take care of each other, brothers and sisters! Equipment: 2004 Nash Strat Fend...
Like No One Is Watching

Feeling tense after the umpteenth quarantine Zoom meeting? Experts tell us that to dance like nobody is watching is great for our mental and physical health. In case you need a soundtrack for your dancing, here's a little disco-funk number for ya! Just remember to make sure you logged out of the Zoom meeting first! :-) Be well and stay safe! Shelter Groove

Brothers and sisters, it can be tough to keep our groove on when we are stuck in shelter-in-place. So, I thought I'd compose and record a little ditty to help us keep our groove going. I hope you enjoy it. The instruments are: 2001 Gibson Historic 1954 Les Paul goldtop reissue Nord Piano 2 HA88 for the electric piano and vocal chorus Drum loops provided with various DAWs
Wish for Well Being

Was sitting at home as part of the physical distancing and I thought I'd write/improvise a tune channeling the current vibe. It is a wish for everyone to be well. It's a second take with clams, but I guess that is reflective of the zeitgeist. The first take was more mistakes than music. I got an Ibanez Universe 7 string guitar a few days ago. I whipped together a little metal riff and an improv over it to see how it sounded. Ha ha, having seven strings and 24 frets threw off all my normal visual cues, and this is full of funny mistakes. :-) Still, it sounds OK, it was good fun, and I can get better on 7 string. :-) Gear: Ibanez Universe UV777BK Fender AVRI '62 Jazz Bass Fender...
Say hello to little richie varola for me joey.!!!!
Scary ow much talent these people got. Incredible
Joey and Jeff have the right amount of skill and seasoning. Sax player needs to not be a showboater and he'll be fine.
To have Joey and Jeff playing together is a powerful combination. The tenor player is good, but needs more seasoning.
Fornicate me! Is all I have to say. Wellll, ddaaalllmmmnnn
Who else besides me caught themselves smiling while watching this video?
Yeah, birds way better than these guys.
Absolutely Down and on the Money. Unique timing love what sounds like a chip from Wurlitzer Elec Piano. Beautiful
Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and to comment! I appreciate it!
every single time I click on one of these videos I start transcribing everything
Drummer I hear you….
This performance also has a view from another angle. Thanks 4 posting.
I still can’t get over the loss of Joey.
Yeah, this is a killer clip (on ALL hands) !!!!!
Besides Joey's magnificent drive I love this trio. It exudes empathy, comfort. You know, I played, with Joey at the piano when he was 15 to 16 jamming at the Village Gate's terrace NYC. Whe you think of a point when you might be able to play anything at anytime l think of Joey because he's, still, the one who gets closer to that point. He has become a model of inspiration for anyone and everyone and so he will be remembered
classic top notch swing - love it! thanks for the musical memories Joey.
A real jazz cat !!!!!!!
Looks like he had relatively short fingers. Which didn’t stop him setting the bar pretty high in the B3 territory.
can't get enough of joey and his fellow artists- words can't describe how transcendent they are!
Great musicians - great melody, I would like to know the name of this great piece. Many Thanks.
It's called Ring-a-Ding-Ding! Originally recorded and released by Frank Sinatra in 1961, but also recorded by John Pizzarelli and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra in 2006.
rip
monster! rip
RIP, legend
Been listening to him the past few days. What a swell guy and his playing is out of this world. Miss you, Joey. Rest easy pal.
Joey is amazing as usual in this extemporaneous performance. That said, something is off with the audio from Viscount organs vs. Hammond B2 organs IMHO (irrespective of Leslie speakers).
RIP, Sublime musician, and super guy.
I was listening this one day before Joey died. Very sad surprise
R.i.p Joey...miss you too much Man.
No matter Where Joey D is its magic I love it keep keeping on
Wow! That's amazing. I heard Joey and Troy playing at the Monterey Jazz Festival a couple years ago. Absolutely great!
Amazing, four piece drum kit. If you count the ride cymbal as a piece and the high hat as a piece. LOL
Very enjoyable.
Who’s the drummer?
Peppe Merolla
Ughhhhh that drummer! Plays chops like nothing! 🔥🔥🔥
Mr Jeff Hamilton there
geez...the camera hangs on Joey and I never know if he's just kickin' pedals or if there's actually a bass player with them...maybe it's just the lower register on the B? either way, it's super stuff.
There was no bass player; it's all Joey.
Incredible to hear (and see) the walking bass line while he's soloing 9:33-9:44 😳😃
this is, without a doubt, the greatest Hammond B-3 player that's ever played it...I know there's been some great ones, but Joey rules, hands down.
My wife just gave me the biggest compliment. She thought that was me playing tenor! (She wasn't watching the video). I wish I could perform with Joey DeFrancesco!
Ahright... Joey!🙂
Always amazing to listen to Joey. I have to say Troy was on fire as per usual and the fluid drummer too. The sax mic was good in the mix this time.
Where is Eddy Baccus Jr. at..????where???????
This is awesome Jay!
Thank you!
very nice musicians, jeff hamilton ufff diana krall drummer!
What's the tune?
God that snare sounds terrible
6:23 Beast mode!
Awesome track
Joey clearly digs Jeff. Duh. Everybody digs Jeff.
Love these VIBES :)
they play like its easy...yea right...planet b3...born on it...lols
