Another update and a quick talk about cyano
Haven't posted an update in a little while and wanted to do an update.
I actually had a cyano problem, all over the rocks and most of my sand bed.
I was pretty shocked how easy it was to get rid of and thought I'd address that.

Update on my 55 gallon after a week of travel
มุมมอง 403 ปีที่แล้ว
Had to travel for work, so I set up some fish feeders on the tank and hoped for the best.
Added a Nero 5
มุมมอง 1973 ปีที่แล้ว
I removed the Current USA eflux powerheads and replaced them with an AI Nero 5. Also had a slight "bump in blood pressure" as I did it as everything in the tank changed in seconds (waterfowl via the return pump was the culprit).
AI Prime HDs mounted
มุมมอง 893 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a quick update on my 55 gallon as it shifted from Current USA leds to AI Prime HDs. These are the older HDs and not the new Prime 16HDs. The newer lights rely on Bluetooth connectivity. These lights are wifi and are definitely not "user friendly". I have 3 of them and I decided to reuse what I had vice pay for the newer version of the lights.

55 Gallon Reef Update 2
มุมมอง 463 ปีที่แล้ว
Finished part of the lid using the Red Sea kit, still have another one to build. Also some "thoughts" on a pretty substantial lighting/powerhead change.
55 Gallon Reef Tank Update

A quick update showing additions to the lighting setup as well as the "control board" that I built for thr Current USA Loop Bluetooth controller and the DC return pump hub.
55 Gallon Reef Tank Tour
มุมมอง 1673 ปีที่แล้ว
Quick tour of my new 55 gallon "budget" reef. Pretty simple tank using Fiji AIO for 55 Gallon with a Fluval PS1 skimmer, Hydor return pump and Cobalt Aquatics Neotherm Heater and Auto Aqua smart ATO (it's pretty packed in there). For lighting and powerheads I went with the Current USA Loop system, 2 660 gph power heads and the Orbit Marine IC 48 inch light fixture. Most of the tank hardware is ...
Review of Current USA Loop System

This is a quick review of the Current USA Loop Bluetooth Loop system on my fairly new 55 gallon saltwater tank. The light fixtures, the powerheads, the Bluetooth controller, the app itself and the features are covered.

The lights actually work quite well for lps and softies, but in specific use cases. I use them and they grow my corals as well as any other light. If Current had the par sheet on the product page for these lights and people used accordingly, they wouldn't get as many negative reviews. One of those lights at 9" down is only pushing like maybe 90 par and I think that's tested with the metal side brackets it comes with. So the higher you have it mounted = even less par. Even with 2, I think the 21" tall tank was pushing what those lights could do. I believe the real issue with your growth was more so the pumps. Just for reference I use one of those 660 gph pumps in a 10 gallon at 50% and still have dead spots lol. They lose what seems like 2/3 of their force just a few inches in front of them probably due to the wide open design. Even on stream at 100% those were not going to work on a 4ft tank. Lps and softies don't require a lot of flow, but they will not grow without enough. And some actually prefer way more than you think. (Some leathers are found with acros in a few feet of water) Can't harp on equipment upgrades tho. Hope it's all worked out. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

Thank you for your honest opinion. I do my best to encourage folks to look elsewhere when they start looking at the Orbit Marine LEDs for the reasons you cited. While it's true you get the integrated functionality for a lower cost, you pay heavily for it in terms of the light's coral growth capabilities. I hope your Primes are serving you well. I love my Hydra 26HDs.

If your tank was 3ft instead of 4ft, I'd ask what you want for the Current USA system.... I'm researching light options for a 40 breeder and a couple small tanks as well... one is just a QT for now. I also just set up a Fluval Evo AIO tank for my daughter...

    • @scottsbudgetreef370
      @scottsbudgetreef370 3 ปีที่แล้ว

"Many moons ago" I had a 40 gallon breeder, and I had one of the older Current USA Marine PROs on it. I think I still have that light somewhere in my basement actually. For smaller footprints I'd say the AI Prime 16HDs are the way to go, they're small, they use lower power, they're controllable. They cover a 2 foot by 2 foot section of a tank. The downside is for a 3 foot tank you'd still need 2 to cover it. The Prime 16HDs will easily grow softies/mushrooms and with overlap I think you'd definitely have a section that could support some lps and sps as well.

@@scottsbudgetreef370 , how high do those need to be mounted above the tank though... the very end of the BRS black box video shows those and another one, XR something... and the last one they showed could work at like 4-6" off the water, but they're like $400 apiece... wish I could just find bulbs locally for my old T5HO 4 bulb fixture, that would give me time to research while things get cycled and matured for a bit.... only have 2 good bulbs when I pulled it back out of storage...

@@isaiahfurrow7414 The height on the Primes depends on the depth of the tank itself 'but' they're really controllable, so you could probably have them 6-8 inches off the water and dial them down on intensity (you can dial down most of the parts of the spectrum you care about). The 'plus' side with the Primes, they are about $200 a piece and they work with the Nero powerheads via app. If you go 'all out' with the Loop system (lights, controller, powerheads) then you end up with two LED fixtures, a controller and two powerheads and all of that together is probably a good 500-600 or so. That's about what two AI Primes and a Nero 3 would run. Word of warning though, avoid the older AI Prime lights. The Prime 16HDs are bluetooth, the older Primes (which I have) can be a pain because they are wifi, but they also have network issues.

@@scottsbudgetreef370 I think the issue of raising the lights is to get the spread, when too close to the tank they're like spotlights and won't cover the entire tank.... I think I'm going to try out a small Fluval 3.0, as it's more programmable and powerful than the light included on my daughter's Evo 13.5g.... and also a small Current USA on one of the QT tanks.... and decide which to go with for the big tank... might end up with one of both brands on the big tank...lol Thanks again for the feedback...

I found your channel looking into the loop system. I am doing research in order to set up a tank with a 36x18" footprint. I have a few 40 breeders, or a 50g that is the same footprint just a couple inches taller. I'm looking into options like these, the strip type lights, so that it can be low profile and sit on top of the tank, or inside a small hood. The black box lights or most of the high end LED options all seem to need to be hung 12-24" above the tank, and I don't want a 2ft tall hood. The lights I am considering are Current USA and Fluval Sea 3.0. I like the programmable day/night settings, and the gradual ramp up and down. Not super interested in the sound aspect or the storms/weather part. Do you think these lights would grow sofies, such as Mushrooms, Zoas, Polyps, Torch, Xenia and GSP...and maybe a couple less demanding hard corals...this would be in a tank less than 20" deep...? If I don't go with the Current USA system, I would probably look into other powerhead options that can give some random/variable flow...

    • @scottsbudgetreef370

Aloha...my tank is a 4 foot long 55 gallon, and I had 2 of the 4 foot Current USA Orbit Marine IC light fixtures on it. Key word tricky phrase had...two of those lights on a tank that is 21 inches deep didn't help with growth. If you were running a FOWLER I'd say these lights are fine, but I couldn't get any of my of my frags to grow. Maybe if your tank is shallower you 'might' have better luck? My tank was too deep for them though and I ended up swapping them out for another set of lights I had (AI Prime HDs). I don't have any experience with the Fluval lights, so I don't know if they'd be enough. I did like how easy the Loop system was to hookup and how controllable it was, but those LEDs just didn't work well in my tank.
