I am a one-man band recording music the old-fashioned way (i.e. without a computer, on a hardware multi-track recording deck.) See my eurorack modular synthesizer slowly grow as I learn to play it. I also draw "furry" comics under the alias Tegerio. Here is where I'll be showing how I do things; mostly music but occasionally art as well.
Three LFOs
Running at different speeds control all of the timing in this patch. The first two LFO square outputs trigger the VCAs for the first two voices. The triangle/sine outputs are fed to 2win (a window comparator) which outputs a gate whenever the two voltages match. This signal is gating the VCA envelope of SV1 for the bass voice. A third LFO is clocking 8 Bit Cipher which is providing pitch CV, quantized through Quantimator and sent to all of the VCAs. Pitch voltage is also sent to Typhoon (Clouds clone) and one of the Cipher gates is occasionally freezing Typhoon's audio buffer.

Michigan Synth Works "Bella" is a mass produced version of the old Mutable Instruments Anushri - the synth that, if I could have gotten one back in 2017, I might not have started building a modular system. Mutable's Grids module was based on the drum section of the Anushri, and the whole reason I got a modular in the first place is because I wanted that and I couldn't find an Anushri for sale a...

I recorded last week's patch into Lubadh and used that as the basis for this mess. Start point is randomly determined so it's jumping around the reel, but I set a fixed clip length so there is a sense of rhythm staying fairly consistent. I may have used this trick before. NLC 8-Bit Cipher is controlling this patch, providing triggers and melody CV. The patterns it generates are based on the interplay between the clock and the "data" input, which determines whether bit 1 will be on or off each time the clock pulses and all of the bits move down one position. The entire mood of the patch can be changed by twisting a single knob, ...

I kept hanging on to that Hermod because it is a "powerful" sequencer and I thought if I just used it more, I would get accustomed to it and learn to like it. Tried making something with it here, but ... as you can see, all it is doing in this patch is providing master clock and relaying pitch & gate CV to my lead voice (both functions I can do WITHOUT Hermod). And a little bit of the Eowaves Ribbon Instrument. The gate pattern from Trigger Riot is not changing. Adjusting knobs on the Operator alters not only the timbre but the whole feel of the beat. I'm also getting a better understanding of Crop Circle, which is surprisingly versatile with its single channel. To think, at one point I almost got rid of it! มุมมอง 1734 หลายเดือนก่อน
On the main rack this is exactly the same patch as the video I posted a couple days ago. I simply disconnected the Passive Operator and plugged those signals into NOON. I still feel like the Operator is more responsive & wild sounding, but NOON is a lot more "playable." I gave in to temptation and bought another noise doodad. Decided on the Eurorack version because I had just the right amount of space in a Pod to make an awesome passive toolbox. The idea was to feed a bunch of sound sources into NLC Cluster. Since each node is a VCA, I could use the 8 gate outputs of Drezno to turn off/on the various channels. This is essentially the same patch as last time, with a few slight changes. First: I tuned the oscillators so this is no longer "microtonal" but is (presumably) in the key of D. Second: The sampled drum loop is no longer providing master clock. It's the same sample as before, at the same speed, but I'm chopping it into 16th notes based on a separate clock which does not match the sample tempo. ...

The return of The Twiddler
มุมมอง 1786 หลายเดือนก่อน
I say "return" even though my TH-cam audience has never seen it. The Twiddler is a hard drive motor out of an old Packard-Bell 486 that died many years ago. I soldered output jacks onto some of the wires so I could hear the signal generated by the motor coils when I turned the spindle. It's LOUD, even by modular standards, but I attenuated it and used it in a series of interrelated recordings b...

funky wild west!
Umm.....
Looks like we got another baffled expert here!
without consulting the dictionary, I do believe the term is "aleotoric" music. (but don't hold me to that spelling.) but what I'm much more sure of is that I like what I'm hearing here.
Aleatoric means being determined by chance rolling of dice, and this actually isn't that! The LFOs are running at fixed, steady rates, and the interaction between them is governing all events in the patch. Even the 8 Bit Cipher isn't random; it uses a digital shift register to generate gates & CV voltages from a single clock (or the interaction of two clocks) producing complexity out of very simple inputs.
@@JoshuaKennedy321 I see. so, no real chance elements here, then?
@@doctorauxiliary Well, the Cipher's math, despite being fairly basic, is beyond my control and might as well be random ... but if you knew the formula it was using, and kept careful track of the two inputs, then every event here is 100% predictable. I guess this is a good example of how just a few layers of complexity make a system that the average human can't keep track of. Even dice rolling isn't truly random because the dice are governed by the laws of physics. If you could build an accurate mathematical model of the dice and every environmental variable, then you would be able to predict every throw. But it's too complicated and it happens too quickly to see, so we call it "chance" and use simpler math (statistics and probability) to describe it.
Yes, this one is packed with surprise after surprise! 🪐🍁💫
It's that Clouds modular delay doing most of the surprising stuff. Clouds and its many clones are probably the most useful modules in all of Eurorack.
Oh how I would have blast with your setup for sure......this whole setup would make rhampton a happy Camper...sou ds Mysterious with some of the short string grooves.....You would love the Rossum Control Forge.....altho it is heavily Menued...lol....oh as I. Concluding, this Mysterious tune gets better.. very nice
If it has a lot of menus, I doubt I would love it! I got rid of every screen in my rack except the Mordax Data.
This is a lot of fun to listen to! I'm on my second pass and I hear all sorts of new elements. It feels really organic, like an ensemble of avante garde musicians, playing off each other. Super patch!
Thanks! The complexity is deceptive, but it worked to my satisfaction.
I really like your psychedelic performances! I felt like I had slipped into the Black Lodge for a few minutes. It was a good idea to use that impish melody to anchor the craziness.
I am going to have to fiddle with the Bella clock output settings because I could not get Grids to sync up with it. The weirdness in the middle resulted from over an hour of frustration of tempo not matching between Bella and Mission Control. I'm worried that changing the clock resolution will also "dumb down" the drum patterns like it does on Grids ... the available options are identical according to the manual.
@@JoshuaKennedy321 Uh oh. Clock issues are the worst! I can't get my RD-9 to sync either. It's a real pain.
Well, it developed promisingly! 💥💫🙂
That's the nicest way to put it. Thanks for listening!
is that all correctly connected?
Outputs are connected to inputs, but beyond that I don't think there was a correct way to build this patch.
very cool
Cool yes
Such a sweet sound, Joshua! And that lead took me right back to the 80s! 🎶💥💫
MicroBrute is pretty good within its limits.
That Bella is fierce! I understand why you've been seeking it so long.
I was considering getting a LepLoop when I found this and realized what it was. LepLoop is _kinda_ the same thing, an analog groove box, but costs twice as much. I think the Lep synthesizer is probably more powerful, but the Anushri sequencer and drums are far superior.
Wow..I own a Shruti but this is amazing..😮 More please! 👍
I'll see what I can do ... Thanks for listening!
yip-yip yay-yaaaay, JWK!! we love this wonky stuff!! & we thank you bunches for the generous & musical fade out.
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for the encouraging words.
i agree wiith KimElectronic, i love that Wobbly Rhythm and that Wood sounding block bell sound...and oh wow,,,you still have that Instruo Lubadh? i want....lol
Lubadh is like a tape recorder with variable speed control and instant jump-to-point. I should have been using it more all along.
@@JoshuaKennedy321 O k let's trade for something... I want. I want.
I love the wobbly kind of rhythm and bell like sound with echoes! 🎶👋🙂
Tom Waits drank too much.
I'm willing to believe that has happened a few times!
This is great fun! I've listened a couple times already because there's so much going on. This piece has a real "elf factory" vibe. Thanks for the closeup flyovers - it's nice to see all those modules doing their jobs.
Is that a factory where elves work, or a factory where elves are made? I was fascinated by how it sounds rhythmically disconnected at first, but then after a few seconds it seems to all lock in. I didn't notice that when I recorded it (because I had been listening to the patch for a WHILE by that point), and nothing changes - as you can see, the patch is running and I didn't touch anything except to fade up at the beginning and down at the end. I think this must be the audio equivalent of a Rorschach blot or something where the pattern suddenly "appears" after your ear has gotten used to hearing it.
Outstanding work! Bravo to you!
GO0D STUFF. cheers
Thanks! You're really digging into the archives, eh? I don't have that case anymore, but I do have all of the modules ... except the two that are featured in this video! I gave up on the PLL because I just didn't understand what it did and what I could use it for aside from making buzz sounds, and there was some kind of audio leakage in the Octal Poly because one of the VCAs wouldn't close all the way.
healing space
very funky!! I loves it, jay-dub!!
Thanks!
I was drawn immediately to your bass sound. It so well-crafted, with just enough pluck and resonance to be crisp, but it also has a richness. The syncopation is excellent and the sense of space is very exciting. Great patch, Joshua!
I forgot how detailed the SV-1 is for this kind of thing.
Groovy jam, Joshua! I think I recognize this sound from the past. 🎶💫👋🙂
Everything old is new again!
I like the sounds & gestures you got outa the error instruments passive operator, but... I think NOON wins this showdown. (insert emoji with cowboy hat here.)
It's definitely tighter and more controllable. Passive Operator is, as Patrick described it below "unhinged."
@@JoshuaKennedy321 "unhinged" certainly has its place, though.
ps... thus far, I have listened for six minutes. I could see 15 working well.
fun little jam here. "hermod's last dance." we gave you your chance. fare thee well, sweet machine....
I keep things longer than I should.
@@JoshuaKennedy321 me too!! I also take way too long to begin attempting to implement new things into my creative processes. so long that the stuff usually isn't even new anymore by the time I actually start using it.
@@doctorauxiliary Glad to know I'm not the only one! (glances nervously at still-unused Tracker)
@@JoshuaKennedy321 hahaha!! that tracker is a magickal gadget, joshua. it is rare that I take quickly to a new piece of musical machinery. (I'm a bit of a tech dodo. & I almost never read manuals. yes... I'm one of those people.) but the polyend tracker... I really did click with it immediately.
Hypnotically good, Joshua! 💫🎶🎹
I thank you for that you just got yourself a new subscriber
Ah, one step closer to world domination! Thanks
I quite enjoyed this ditty! The key changes are engaging and the melody improv is charming. The steady rhythm reminded me just enough of a krautrock approach that I expected the jam to continue in the same vein for another fifteen minutes. Very nice! Too bad a out the Hermod. I've stubbornly clung to devices that didn't serve me well, and regretted it. It's a good thing to move on.
If it's any consolation, I listened to this for a lot longer than 15 minutes...

Ah Bit Ranger, so easy to forget... I should dig that thing out and dust it off. Thanks for listening, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
really nice groove here, joshua!! & that ribbon controller really speaks, huh?!?
I've had that ribbon instrument for a while ... more than 2 years. It's been languishing in its shipping tube because I just didn't like it much, and believe it or not I felt like the theremin was easier to play. But then I pulled it out this June and I think I'm starting to appreciate it now.
Yes! Very much tighter! This is a great performance. I can imagine enjoying this at a live show. Just enough syncopation balanced with variety and improvisation.
I forgot to mention Bastl Kastle which is carrying the weight of the main rhythm part.
You using Trogotronic anywhere in the mix?
Not this time.
The squidgy lead is the star of the show! It almost has a cartoon character voice. I love the way the bass pattern plays off of it. Great patch! I'd be very interested to hear more improvs with the touch strip. Its mellow tone is a nice contrast to the raspy lead.
Wowww,,,it does have that sorta Cartoon vibe
The Operator is labeled a "drum synth" (and NOON was marketed as one too) but it's a compendium of surprising noises.
it's working for me, jwk. ;-)
Good to know! Thanks.
Ah, I was wondering about the NOON sounds. Thank you for this video - I can really hear the difference! The Operator sounded slightly unhinged, and that made it more exciting in some ways. I think the tiny interface would vex me, compared to the open (and attractive) NOON.
Yeah, I think NOON is a little more tame, but that nice playing surface is hard to argue with.
I definitely like those sounds! It's a very jazzy set, and proof that the Operator is an intuitive instrument. Too bad about the ergonomics, though. We just need to buy bigger houses to enclose all the tabletop instruments.
I tried this exact same patch with the NOON (disconnected Operator, kept main rack exactly same & plugged all the cables into NOON instead - video maybe tomorrow). I'm thinking now that the way the Operator is built - with a patch bay instead of switches - encourages reckless experimentation and that's what makes it seem "wilder" than the NOON.
cool - totally works for me.
Thanks.
so soo cool, i like how you use analog methods
Yeahhhhh boyyyy,,,,love that Lofi Groove...
Can't go wrong that way!
Excellent! Is that a Trogotronic module?!
Yes, the Trogotronic m/669 "Warthog" Originally it was being gated along with everything else, but I took it out and let it run free so there'd be something holding the mix together. It's making the static fizzles and radio whines.
For me that works! 👋🙂⚡
Glad to know it! Thanks!
That cluster has black magic under the panel! Making each channel CV controllable is genius and I like the way you've used it here with the Drezno. I think your experiment absolutely worked, and it has more potential too.
