Looking for a replacement for the barbell squat? Try the Bulgarian Split Squat

If you are lacking equipment or hate going to a gym, you still need to train the legs. If there is one exercise I would choose to replace the squat, I would choose the Bulgarian Split Squat. It is by no means a perfect replacement, but you can certainly build strong legs with this exercise. scottallancole.com

I believe the squat is the best exercise you can train for strength. It involves a natural movement pattern and it trains the most muscle mass. If you are over 50, it is critical that you start doing some form of strength training, and for the vast majority of people, it is possible to squat.
