For a little while at least. 626 was one thing but setting the target above 700 seems to have cooled everyone’s jets. And if no one will put up sponsorship money to do it, top pros won’t put in the effort.
What a time capsule! The new library went up in the next 6 years. Clark Tech changed to Clark State. We got mugs in our gift bags. "First graduating class" is printed on the mugs.
Nowadays when you go to put gas in your car bums come up asking you for money or someone is saying are you good meaning do you need some crack or heroin. The mall is closed down and this lake they talked about looks like a septic tank has been pumped in it for years. Good old Springfield. How times change.
My grandparent's lived in Springfield from the late 1950s until 1986. In that time period they only lived in three places in Springfield. They lived in an apartment building downtown in the late '50s...not long after they moved to the apartment building he got a job at International over near Lagonda Park...they moved to the wooded area nearby on Belmont Avenue and then they moved to the heavily populated Cecil Street in the mid 1970s. I'd spend the weekends with them when they lived on Cecil Street in the early to mid 1980s. I didn't 'grow up' in Springfield but I definitely had a lot of weekends there with my grandparents. We'd go to the Upper Valley Mall, we'd drive to the various parks, we'd drive near the lake and take in all of the scenery. During the summer I'd spend a week or two with them...part of his job at International was delivering parts to various places in and around Springfield. Whenever he'd stop by the house for lunch in his delivery truck we'd go heading to one of the two Root Beer stands...usually the one out near Bird Road.
There is a bit more to this interesting footage. Bud Abbott and his wife Jennie Mae ('Betty') were remarried on this evening (March 13, 1950) at this hotel in Springfield, Ohio. They were remarried in a Jewish ceremony by retired Rabbi Samuel Harris of Dayton. The ceremony followed the marriage of two friends of the Abbotts, Joan Ritoff of Springfield and Samuel Kahn, president of the Gem City Building Company, of Dayton, both of whom are seen in this footage. Bud and his wife Betty (she can be seen in this footage as well, wearing a light blue dress) were still married to each other--they had not divorced--but Betty wanted to be married in a Jewish ceremony, having apparently converted to Judaism. (Bud's mother was apparently Jewish.)
As impressive as Schmidt's new record is, he continually trained for that for a year and Mosconi did it on a whim at the spur of the moment. A testament to how phenomenal and far ahead of everyone else Mosconi really is. Yes, he is no longer with us but he still is the best player of all time thus far and will likely remain so for a long time to come.
@@joebradley1520 No shit! I didn't mean he played the game on a whim. He did it after he won an exhibition match and he casually kept shooting after the game was over and ended up establishing the record unintentionally. He only stopped because he was getting tired but he probably could've gotten a much higher run that day if he continued. You're ridiculous for even trying to clarify that as if I wasn't already aware that was the main pocket billiards game of that era.
@@mjt11860 Charlie Ursitti said that when he was hanging out with Willie at his home, Willie would often run over 700 balls or more. There was just no official record of it so, I guess hardly worth mentioning In their eyes.
This was back when International Harvester supplied most the jobs... No coincidence when I.H. left, or became Navistar and cut most of its production, Springfield went to Hell... Not even a safe place to walk down the street in broad daylight
That's not what Willie says in an interview, Willie says he never missed, he got tired and just set the stick down and stopped playing, were you there?
I hear things are a little different now.

Poor John Schmidt. Broke a longstanding record and then got his own record broken shortly thereafter. Wonder how long Shaw's will last?

That record now belongs to Jayson Shaw

Now it's Haitians. Except they don't have to ask for money because Biden gives them our money for free. 🙃
Must be a democrat city now because it is trash.

Pretty good, but obvious edit cut past ork and repeat lyrics to the last few bars.

My best friends lived on Cecil St in the 60`s and 70`s, just a couple blocks from the Wittenberg Stadium. I lived on Garfield. Those were the days!
I live on Cecil Street currently.
This Springfield place sounds alright. What did they do with it?

the official record. but willie claimed to have shot over 700 (709?), i believe, but nobody in an official capacity was there that could verify it.

Willie is lying, there is evidence he missed.
This was recorded by the "Singing Fools" quartet of Chuck Moorman, Joe Sample, Pat McAtee and Mark Heaton.
Interesting - who wrote the song?
So glad you found this Dick.

My mom took me to Jim's when I was five years old. I remember looking under the table and seeing literally thousands of pieces of chewing gum.
I remember Mark The Mad One.
DO NOT take more than one every three hours- may cause uncontrollable seizures...
I knew Nate Moore. He was a caddie at the Springfield Country Club and a brother of Dave and Jimmy.
AWESOME! Many memories! I have tried to duplicate the grilled ham salad sandwich from Jim's, but not the same! DIANE Wetherill Schools
