Besides the fall, this routine was actually really good. If she had a few more months of training it would’ve looked more cleaner. Also if she started training during 2010 she could’ve easily added upgrades to make it more competitive for event finals. Maybe even compete in the all around because when she originally made her comeback she was training all 4 events. I wish I could’ve seen her in London 😭

This is kinda upsetting to watch. They’re trained so hard when they’re young that their body just can’t keep going at the same pace anymore. The culture around training since then has gotten better with pacing gymnasts, and now many gymnasts are continuing elite training well into their 20s. Pauline Schäfer, Ellie Black, Elizabeth Seitz. Gymnasts in their 30s too: Jade Barbosa, Vanessa Ferrari. Gymnasts in the 40s: Oksana Chusovitina … to name a few! Haha

The truth is: they didn't need Alicia for team finals, and with those two crucial falls in 08? Nah. I truly believe Martha picked Aly, Gabby, Jordyn, McKayla, and Kyla before the trials. They were the strongest combo all 2012

Really, I love gymnastics and ice skating (figure and pairs skating). But the artistry while brilliant from the stocky short athletes is not a beautiful as everything Nastia does. I find myself exclusively watching her performances and ignoring the rest. And with ice skaters, I only look at performances of those who share Nastia's physicality. The rest don't have the elegance. The announcers are overly critical of Nastia apparently preferring the short stocky athletes.

My heart really goes out to competitors everywhere for those times that they've put in all they had to give and just come up short... I remember Nastias coach with his heart beating out of his chest and already crying saying "World Champion!! I'm telling you!" When she would go on to take all around gold. Moments... some moments will love forever... this was actually one of them to know that she would go from tears of slight pain and more wounded pride/embarrassment, to bounce back with her head held high, silencing any doubts about her place in history forever.

Yikes that Van Leeuwen. Wish they tried something else. She probably could have done this routine for a 6.8 difficulty value at the time, it's cleaner version of the standard "Russian routine" that would soon become common (this format removes the clunky extra Giant 1/2 they are always doing): Toe 1/1 (D) + Komova II (E) + Pak (D) *.4 cv* Inbar 1/1 (E) + Maloney (D) + Inbar 1/2 (D) + Jaeger (D) *.5 cv* Double Layout (D)

Thats why she shouldnt have started only a few months prior , she was already a more of an artistic gymnast and even in Beijing and before 2008 she wasnt really known for her endurance and power , especially with her height its hard , her whole bars routine was too much for her , she should have started from the other side of the high bar, only do two pirouettes into the geinger, and take out the tkatchev or connect it to the pak, and only do a double front , it wouldve shortened her routine and give her a chance to make it

toaster oven “routines are simpler at the college level so you don’t need as much endurance” WAIT. WHAT?! I think the reason it seems that way is because in college the team is made up of people from different skill levels. I have seen a few girls and routines that could definitely podium in the olympics. I kinda don’t understand the what and why of what you are trying to say... because Nastia is average height for a gymnast! Also, I don’t believe she got taller after the Olympics which mean the height is nothing new for her. Hitting her foot on the bar has nothing to do with her height! She hit her foot because she had not been training.

The routine composition was not smart. That Tkatchev in the middle killed her endurance and broke the flow she had earlier in the routine. She needed to start with the Pak salto (ideally a bail), use a Ray to get back to the high bar and then stay on the high bar for the rest of routine where she was best. There were way too many kip cast handstands in the second half of the routine.
