What's the Best Way to Manage HOBBIES with ADHD
Struggling to maintain hobbies with ADHD? You're definitely not alone! If you've ever googled “how to have hobbies with ADHD,” you’ve probably seen lists of hobbies you could try. But we all know that having a list isn’t the hard part-our untouched guitars, books, and gym memberships are proof of that! The real challenge is actually sticking with them. In this video, I’m sharing practical strategies that have helped me keep up with my hobbies over time, even with the unpredictable nature of ADHD.
@HowtoADHD video:

Intro: 00:00

Use hyper fixations: 02:17
Increase novelty: 03:28
Ease of access: 04:58
Mindset shift: 06:43
Friendship: 08:28
I introduce you to my "Rotation System," where I always keep 3-4 stable hobbies in rotation, and leave 1-2 free slots for hyperfixations. When my brain latches onto a new obsession, I fully dive in but eventually return to my core hobbies without guilt. I also show you how to tie hobbies to your hyperfixations-whether it’s adjusting what you read, how you exercise, or what music you listen to-so you can stay motivated even when your interests shift.
In addition, we talk about introducing novelty to prevent boredom and increase productivity, whether it’s learning multiple guitar songs at once or rotating through different books. I also cover the importance of ease in keeping hobbies sustainable-like leaving instruments plugged in and making sure your books are always at arm’s reach. Plus, we touch on a mindset shift about how ADHD brains relax-hint: it’s not always about doing something “calming,” sometimes we need stimulation to truly unwind.
Finally, I dive into the power of making your hobbies social! Whether it's movie nights with friends, lifting with a workout buddy, or finding local meetups, getting others involved can make hobbies feel effortless.
Share your own ADHD hobby tips in the comments, and let’s build a community of support!

      Great question! Tbh I always avoided going to class as much as I could in college if attendance was not required, BUT I did have classes I enjoyed going to and the way I made them enjoyable was participation and reviewing the material beforehand. With participation, I would do it in a few ways: -try and answer every question the teacher asks -be the team leader for every project or group assignment/lab -ask the teacher for context: why is this important? How does this fit into wider context? If the teacher can't answer this, look over notes before class and fit it into the context of the overall class and understand why that one piece is needed for this class and why it is being taught then. I found knowing context and overall structure made things more interesting and I wanted to pay attention more. I also found having slides printed if possible and annotating on them made it easier to do notes. If slides are not possible, I found not taking notes and just trying to in my head summarize and ask questions whenever they popped in my head or being a study lead for my classes helped because I had the added social pressure of paying attention to help my classmates. I can make a video on this! I think this is a great topic and might released soon

    In these last few years, companies have shown their true colors and we've all seen how ruthless they can be to employees. It doesn't matter how good you are at your job, how much effort you put in, or how loyal you've been to them, they'll fire you on a moment's notice for the sake of budget cuts and making investors happy. Never mind the fact that we have families to provide for and bills to pay. They can be that way, but we will only reciprocate the same energy. Many people don't get paid enough to care. Minimum pay, minimum effort. I see a better opportunity, bye.

    Another thing I hear a lot is that employing gen z is more expensive and riskier then employing a boomer or gen x. Idk if it’s true still looking into it.

    • @varunjoshi3991
      @varunjoshi3991 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Part of that could be the job hopping that gen z kids are more likely to do due to lower pay. This problem may be fixed if employers pay higher most likely in my opinion, as job hopping is typically done for higher salary reasons. I found that it was a lot easier to stay at my job due to more fair pay and good work environments. The higher salary is, again, more to reflect the much higher costs of housing and living, which boomers and gen xers don't have as much of a problem with because they have already accumulated wealth and had much higher salaries in comparison to the economic times they were raised in.

    • @izzey0729

    It's cheaper for the government to replace you with a migrant working class that accepts less money and worst working conditions

    • @quailchicken7517
      @quailchicken7517 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This. This is one of the major reasons why there is no serious attempt to address Gen Z’s financial plight. Politicians and the older gens would rather gaslight Millenials and Gen Z, wasting our time and lying to us, as they pave the way for migrants to replace us under our noses. And hey, I’m not upset at migrants. They’re going to do what they’re going to do if conditions suck in their countries. Really it is the older gens and politicians that need to be taken to task. Plus, those poor migrants are being set up to be exploited on worse level than we are. In the 80’s and onward, outsourcing was all the rage, while importing people was popular in some industries but now importing is the bad game. It IS not our fault that businesses and the government are so used to operating at levels of debt that they need to artificially keep the minimum wage down to save off the backs of young people. This is about to get worse. Look how it’s turning out in New York on Cash Jordan’s channel. Anyway, I think Gen Z needs to do the unthinkable, which is teaming up in groups to by land together. Large enough amounts of land so that parts of it can be sold back as individual plots at “cheaper” rate to the people who initially invested in the group project. We need to work together to find ways make money and create environments to raise families. We need to learn skills so we don’t need to purchase outrageous services. Did you know it’s completely legal to form a co-op in lieu of insurance? Anything and everything we can do to be independent in the face of a financially hostile and exploitative system, we should do it. We’re still young and have the energy to try. And any gatekeeping and obstacles along the way, will be shored up by the strength of a group. If Gen Z has really been left out to dry, remember: survival in numbers.

    i love how you put into perspective the numbers at the start of the video. However, quality of life is way different from 1980s compared to now. we're not talking about how in 1980s, how limited options they have in terms of investing. information is very limited back then. no internet. you have to go to physical stores to buy stuff. you need to talk to a real person to get information. you have to be creative to pass time. you have to cook to eat, or go get your ass up to buy ready made food. you need to go to bank to access their services. a lot of time is wasted by waiting since most information is manually processed. that generation paved the way to what we have right now. want a job? go get your ass up and apply physically to companies - i understand it's way easier to get one back then but there's a lot of people now that don't want to do blue collar jobs because they can survive their day to day. now, everything is in your celfone and all information are already there, it's only doing due diligence to sort that thing out. all i have mentioned above are essentially just a click away. also, imagine if boomers have the same mentality that "it doesn't matter how much work they put it since MAJORITY of them are just average people on their 60+ now", we're not talking about this right now. i firmly believe if the roles were reversed, we'll end up doing what the boomers have done and you'll have to call this generation lazy too. while i understand why people are nihilistic now because they can't find their purpose, it's so bad to think that we compare different generations and just talk about the pros of the previous and the cons of the current. i think the biggest issue here is that the same with how you perceive BOOMERS put GEN Zs = lazy and entitled in one category is the same in reverse, we have put BOOMERS in one category = privileged and had it all way easier. another big thing is lack of perspective from GEN Zs from first world countries, the lack of acknowledgment that you have it way better than people from poor countries - and if you'll say that it's red herring and not your western problem, that may show lack of global perspective of how easier life is now and that you can still have a flourishing life if you choose to (of course not 100% guarantee but you can try and have better chances than from literally more than 5 billion other poor people from the rest of the world give or take). lack of purpose and dignity in our work is what drives this shit now. this topic is more nuanced than what you have shown. but i agree with most of what you have said in this video, there's just a lack of perspective on the cons from the previous generation. there are pros and cons and if we just cherry pick those and not put both realities in perspective, we'll have this great divide and misunderstanding of each other.

    the masculine men you mentioned are right 100 %. this young generation anything under the late 1990's babies are soft. i cant fully blame them because you are living in a social media age. humans for thousands of years never had a phone to look at everyday, and that constant hit of dopamine fries your brain. in the real world if you came face to face with any of these guys we will find out soon who the "coward" is.

      I do want to clarify, that simply hiding behind emotions and running is not what I am advocating for. I want to advocate for being open and honest with emotions and not hiding from difficult, painful emotions. I want to give a proper, in-depth response, as I think this mindset is quite deep-rooted and to anyone else who agrees, hopefully this response can raise some doubts towards it. I also appreciate discourse around this issue and think it is important, so thank you for providing your input. I can understand your perspective, but oftentimes, these men have large social media followings and are online more than most men are. Their entire life and persona is being online and reading radical perspectives that are detached from reality. The idea of most men are too online, while these are not, in my opinion, is flawed as these men are the same ones who are online more than anyone else (fresh and fit and sneako are the best examples). The research also does not back this perspective either, as there's little to no research backing that this mindset provides benefit, but there is ample research showing how male loneliness and isolation and lack of vulnerability leads to problematic outcomes. While I agree that the alpha male figures have some good points (working hard is important, not to mope around in negative emotions, etc) they are largely quite emotional (rage is an emotion) and hypocritical and their personal lives show it. Why aren't fresh and fit married despite preaching traditional values and being in their late 30s? Why are Fresh and Fit reliant on sugar daddy sites to find women? Why was Andrew Tate arrested and why did his values lead him to exploit other human beings for profit? Why has Sneako's entire family stopped talking to him? If these values worked, these men would have better lives. They have achieved short-term success through controversy, but lack most things they preach and blame outside forces constantly rather than looking inward.

    Aaahh I have a hard time knowing what it is to be myself. I tend to be people pleasing, out of anxiety, but it ends up to the point having the other person thinking I am into them like a relationship when I do not want to. I wanna learn how to make it clear to people that I am not romantically interested if I’m just being super fun and getting along. It’s strange. Idk. But like I don’t want to hurt others bc if people pleasing- I wanna actually stand up for myself when I do not feel comfortable around others. I have BPD and ADHD- “fuuuuun”. 😢

      It is hard especially with BPD and ADHD! I have them both as well and it is difficult to know yourself well with both disorders. I found that just starting with small things can help, like taking days to yourself and saying no if people ask you to hang out that day, turning down friends if you are too tired to go or don't want to do the things they are doing, etc. It takes a lot of time though. Alone time can help a lot as well with figuring out who you are, especially like quiet alone time with no stimulation or music. I wish you luck in your journey! You got this.

    One thing I haven't seen other ppl talk about yet is using LLM's (Claude 3.5 is really really good, I like it more than ChatGPT4o) as an operationalizing helper, or even just as a bouncing board to get you started. Operationalizing is the "breaking down of a big task into small actions". You can yap all day at these things, they will politely and patiently break down big things into smaller actions, break down those small actions into smaller even easier actions and so on. Also when you are studying and get stuck on something, they are so good for "I'm trying to learn about Topic. I understand how and why X and Y are important, but I don't understand why they mean Z. What am I missing?" Just yap yap yap out a horrific run-on sentence about what you are doing and why you are stuck, they are so good at summarizing and rephrasing.

    I always found that with essays specifically, the hardest part is organizing the thoughts in my brain in the structure of an essay, and even thinking about what to start with and what comes after that is so dreadful. So the way I combat this is to fully flesh out my thoughts as they come in different paragraphs and organize them later. That way my essay is basically written, it just needs some aranging. This also takes the pressure out of beginning the task because you re technically not "beginning" :)

    For planning, part of the problem is following through. To create the habit, I would first set a rule, for that time, to avoid the more fun things. This makes the desired task look more interesting when we inevitably compare things to the alternative.

If pops feels like helping me with my reputation, I'll show up and he'll tell me it it starts at 8 so I can be there first and look so punctual haha. It worked one time. Hi I hope you are able to find healing from all you are going through, it sounds overwhelming to deal with all those things at once. I also can see in the video it comes across as me developing these skills kind of effortlessly, but I do want to highlight that even with all these tips, I still struggle quite a bit as well and have taken the better part of a decade to reach my current level of functionality. I want to make sure I don't make anyone feel like I am perfect or my level of success is unattainable or anything like that. I also similar to your story developed OCD, anxiety, depression, Borderline from my ADHD and was in constant burnout. But the road to improvement is possible and in reach. It takes a long time, but things eventually get a little easier each day. Keep going strong!
