Westport Book Fair -- Vlogstuffs
Hey y'all! I had to stop making videos for a while, but I think it's time to get back in the saddle. Here's a very quick video from the Westport Book Fair; this is an experiment learning DaVinci Resolve, so I hope it turned out okay!

A Conversation with Richard Zenith ABRIDGED - Vlogstuffs
มุมมอง 462 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey folks, it's a very delayed vlog of A Conversation with Richard Zenith starring the man himself and my friend Grace! Sorry for all the shaky footage; I forgot my tripod when I went to the event and had to hold my phone for the entire thing. I didn't film everything so that I could give my arms a break, but I tried to get as much as I could of this great talk by Zenith and the insightful ques...

The Legend of Dandara - WHY WE NEED IT + EXPERT OPINIONS
มุมมอง 1042 ปีที่แล้ว
As Lendas de Dandara is a Brazilian middle-grade chapter book about the history of Palmares starring Dandara, a warrior sent by the Yoruba gods to liberate the African people enslaved in Brazil based on the historical figure of the same name. In this video, I sought out some experts on children's novels to give me their impressions of the book and whether it would be successful in English trans...
Daytripper's European Translation with Nilson da Silva - Expert Opinions
มุมมอง 542 ปีที่แล้ว
Daytripper is a Brazilian graphic novel that was first written and published in English in the United States. In this video, Brazilian sociolinguist and PhD student Nilson da Silva and I discuss the European Portuguese translation of Daytripper and some of the linguistic oddities that we found. If you'd like to purchase a copy of Daytripper on Amazon (not an affiliate link because I have no clo...
Angola Janga by Marcelo D'Salete IN POLISH?! - Expert Opinion
มุมมอง 723 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey there, Humans! I present to you here my first take at shooting on two cameras! Tons of thanks to my advisor, Dr. Klobucka, for agreeing to make this video with me, and to pal of the Portuguese department Don Burton for giving me some tips on filming and on Adobe Premiere that really came in handy while making this video. There was definitely a learning curve going into the editing process, ...
TRANSLATE THIS NOVEL: O amante é sempre o último a saber - Rui Zink
มุมมอง 1943 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey there, humans! In this first installment of Why We Need It, I'm making the case for an English translation of the Portuguese novel O amante é sempre o último a saber by Rui Zink. This is a fantastic novel, and I know so many people who would love to read it, but since it hasn't been translated yet, they can't. Someone please translate this book, or I'm gonna have to do it myself! You can ge...
Transparent City by Ondjaki - The Reading List
มุมมอง 3013 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey there, Humans! Today we're taking a look at Transparent City by Ondjaki, translated by Stephen Henighan (spelled correctly here, with an A, and typoed in the video). This video is a special one for me, and the one that I wanted to come back with after my hiatus; Ondjaki was my professor during the Fall 2016 semester at UMass Dartmouth, which was my first semester in the Luso-Afro-Brazilian ...
CHIQUINHO LAUNCH PARTY
มุมมอง 1815 ปีที่แล้ว
I went to Tagus Press's launch party for Chiquinho: A Novel of Cabo Verde at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. About the book (copied from UMass Press): "Originally published in Portuguese in 1947, Baltazar Lopes’s Chiquinho offers a rich and compelling exploration of Cabo Verde’s unique identity. Tracing the arc of its young protagonist’s life as he approaches adulthood, the novel follows Chiqui...
Ernest Hemingway with Prof. Nicholas Cialini - Expert Opinion
มุมมอง 655 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey, there, humans! This video was shot back in July with one of my best friends from undergrad, the illustrious and intelligent Nick Cialini. Nick, his wife Steph, and I went to school together and studied under a Hemingway scholar, which turned Nick into one himself. This is the last video I shot on my Samsung Galaxy S6, too, so history! Now I have a real camera ;)

San Francisco Christmas Book Haul!!!! My older sister lives in California, so my family went there to spend the holidays together. With My Dog Eyes by Hilda Hilst - The Reading List

Today, we're talking about a brilliant book by Brazilian poet and novelist Hilda Hilst, With My Dog Eyes. I enjoyed this book with all of its complications and twists packed into the super-condensed 62 pages of text.
The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai - The Reading List
มุมมอง 1.4K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Today we're talking about a classic of Japanese literature, The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai. I recently finished reading this book, and I fell in love with Dazai as a writer all over again. It's a very different book from No Longer Human, so if that's your primary exposure to Dazai's work (it was for me), you are in for a surprise. Both books are beautiful, though, and I recommend them, even wit...

These statistics are unsurprising but also a huge bummer. It’s awesome to know how hard librarians work to bring in culturally diverse books.

It was a lot of fun to do, thank *you* for inviting me. While not intentional, it makes a lot of sense that when I said "querying" you heard "queering": a differently situated reading like this is all about denaturalization, disruption, divergence from expectable pathways, and so on. So happy Pride and happy qu(e)rying to you too!

Thanks for this video! Based on your comments, and the questions you asked at the beginning, this is a novel I would certainly like. But I know about three words of Portuguese, so it would have to be in English!

Hi! As a translator, I love your idea and approach to making translated literature less scary to the average reader. I've translated some 19th-century, dark fairy tales from Italian into English would you be willing to consider them for review?

I'm from Brazil and I loved your video about Hilda's book. She's not much known - read - in Brazil (despit of being one of the most important writers in XX). I'd like you made a video about her books. Like "Tu não te moves de ti" (You don't move yourself/You don't go away from yourself) but it does not have any translate to English

The model of Kazuko is considered Poet " Shizuko Ohta " who was a lover of Dazai. Shizuko became single mother (with a daughter of Dazai) and got disinherited by her parents, but would overcome the hardships of the life. For The Setting Sun as well as for No Longer Human, Dazai described pretty much of his own life experiences for his novels. But his real life and novels are two different existences, which I came to understand after I grew up. I'm from Japan and I know many Japanese readers guess Dazai was a person like the protagonist in No Longer Human... The protagonist maybe a par
