I grew up in the back of a Stockyard due to my family owning and operating 3 different barns here in northeast Alabama. Not all three at one time but from the 1970’s thru until 2005 or so I’ve honestly forgotten. I wasn’t alive until around the time they sold the first one at Fort Payne and bought the Sand Mtn Stockyard at Kilpatrick. So I have found memories of Kilpatrick but they sold it in 88 after having all they wanted of the very large and successful auctions 2 days a week on Wednesday and Saturday. Then in the years after selling that barn and buying Arab Livestock Market my father managed Asheville Stockyard and we moved there. My Grandfather and father both regretted selling Kilpatrick pretty quick but had signed a contract with the new owners saying that they wouldn’t own another Stockyard in our region for some amount of years. So even though they were interested in buying another Stockyard (my grandfather about went stir crazy) had to legally wait until the time had passed or get sued. In 1994 the time had expired and we bought Arab and basically remodelled the whole barn and added a new office and restaurant changing it from a dairy cattle sale into a beef sale. I really didn’t have any responsibilities until I got a little older around 97 and worked and helped haul cattle and manage the barn until whatever year my grandfather and father retired due to age and with dad his health issues. I was old enough to keep it going but so were my cousins and we couldn’t all be expecting to have our fair share of the profits. So I no longer watch anywhere between 500 on a bad day to 1500 on a real good one. It took a while but I miss it and even tried working as a market news reporter for a few years but hated that job and made chicken scratch money while watching cattle walk buy I wasn’t allowed to buy and make money on. I might try to get me a few orders thru acquaintances one day I just don’t know yet. It’s been 10 years or so and that’s why I’m flabbergasted at the prices.
I went to this LMA event, loved every minute of my time there, it was a true working vacation. I love the people, and the competition was 10X better than all the videos I keep watching year round. Thank you LMA
I love these videos!!!! Thank you LMA!
My grandfather always liked a good show
Congratulations Jacob!
Yabba dabba doo!
Cool video! What are the auctioneers judged on? The top competitors were all great.
Speed, clarity of chant for number, ability to spot bids. I understood all of the auctioneers for where they were at on the price points.
That's me selling at 4:03 with Don Bledsoe, one of the owners at Olean Livestock Market , Eldon Missouri, a few years back.
Good job boys! Sound great!
What do the heiroglyphics on the walls mean?
Those are a variety of cattle brands that have been used to mark ownership of free grazing cattle.
Amazing! I'd love to be able to do this.
I thought they were all great
Awesome!
Wait there’s a contest for this stuff? Woah.
