Glad you liked it! Warhost of Vastmark is one of the best in the series. You're in for a treat!
I'm backlogged on posting videos, I've already read Warhost and you're absolutely right! It's my favorite in the series to date. I'm diving into Fugitive Prince next week and can't wait!
This is a series I need to continue. I enjoyed it overall
Maybe in time for whenever the 3rd book's announced? The 2nd book's very different from this one.
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels Yeah I kind of wanted to wait so I could read them close together
I keep seeing Dreamer’s Pool at my local used bookstore. Now I want to pick it up.
@@Maeve_Ever_Books it's worth the read!
Great review.😊 I wanted to read this book for February, but there are 73 other people before me on the Libby App. So I guess I won't get to it until July. 😂
Yea its popular! I was lucky that the branch near me had physical copies, which is why I ran out to get the sequel as soon as I was done this one, ha.
Great video Rabin! I got the Wars of Light and Shadow for Christmas and am going to start reading them this year. I’m very excited. Dandelion Dynasty is also an all time favorite series. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!
Sweet, hope you enjoy WoLaS as much as I do!
Great video Rabin! I just found your channel. Looks like you had some great reads last year. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!
It really was a great year. Thanks, same to you!
Nice list!
Thanks!
Great list, Rabin! This video has increased my Amazon wishlist with about 10 books (Juliet Marillier and Katherine Arden and more). You get more enthusiastic with each new series you talk about ;-)
Because as I go further in we get closer to my favorites of the year, hard not to gush 😂
Added a few of these to my TBR, glad to see stuff outside of the usual highlights!
I read quite a bit outside the usual lines as far as Booktube goes, so you'll find plenty of unknown books here. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the ones that sparked your interest!
Nightingale is so good and underrated!
That it is!
So glad to see Paksenarrion on this list!! I really need to get back into Benedict Jacka's UF too!
Paks was such a great read. I'm trying to get more people to read that trilogy, one person tried it so far and loved it, ha.
I really enjoyed The Burning a few years ago. Been so long I don't remember the 2nd book very well at all though. Hurray for Sarantine Mosaic! Oh we're on the same page regarding Wars of Light & Shadow!!! I'm on Book 4 and its great so far, but very much a mood read for me. I've 1 book left of Dandelion Dynasty. Liu really has crafted a masterpiece. Wall of Storms alone is beyond words. Yes, its like seeing a pig fly!!! Only series I read last year were: Liveship Traders (the last 2 books), Tawny Man (my favourite of the RotE subseries), Rain Wild Chronicles, Fitz & the Fool, Books 2 and 3 of Memory Sorrow & Thorn, first three bolks of Wars of Light & Shadow and my re-read of Prince of Nothing.
I'm hoping to start Fugitive Prince in another couple days! Pretty excited to dive back in, Warhost of Vastmark was my favorite of the series to date. Sounds to me like you did quality over quantity last year, those series are all bangers.
I read Nevernight and loved it. But I did not go for Kristoff's Vampire book. I'm just not that big a vampire fan that I needed it.
Vampires aren't a draw for me either, but this one's quite a bit more than that. The vamps are secondary/backdrop to the real story being told, surprisingly, given how much the vampire element of the story is played up.
I still got to get to the sword of Kaigen but when you said “gormenghast inspired” for your top pick the west passage my ear perked up. I’ll add it to the list
It's got the freaky imagination of Gormenghast and takes place in a strange castle in the same way, but it's less character focused and more plot driven. But yea, I know you liked Gormenghast so I think you'd most likely have a good time with The West Passage!
You should reread Jade City after this
I want to at some point, but not that soon!
I ordered the broken binding version. Cant wait!
This sounds so cool!
This book elevated the tension and I loved it!!!
I can't wait to read Grave Empire. The Empire of the Wolf trilogy is one of my favorite fantasy series. I am glad this one seems to be great as well.
@@mindysbookjourney I hope it lives up for you!
Yep, I'm really happy I started this trilogy. Paksenarrion is definitely one of my favorite characters in fantasy now. This book was a great if painful at times ride but it brought every wave of emotion that a strong piece of work can do.
I know right! It's crazy these books aren't more popular. Paks' journey is easily one of the most intense character arcs I've read in fantasy. How'd you like the finale?
@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels I liked it quite alot, endings are hard to land but this one kept the fantasy alive for further storytelling. Though I think I'll check out the Curse of the mistwraiths before I read the next 5 in the series.
@TheBlazegeo I'm with you there! I'm honestly undecided about the rest because this trilogy was so good, I haven't heard much about the sequels and I'm hesitant to risk my memory of this story as it stands.
This sounds very interesting and cool. I need to find a copy! Thanks for another great recommendation!
I almost picked up a copy of this a few months ago. (it was in rough shape) I will be keeping an eye out for another copy!
this falls into a favorite read category.
Are the similarities to Psalm for the Wild-Built just surface-level? From your description it feels like it's deliberately trying to follow it, or maybe respond. Both are "cozy"/small stakes, both have a protagonist who has an interpersonal job (ritualistically serving tea, telling fortunes), and travels around in a wagon.
Haven't read it, so can't confirm unfortunately. If you read this one would be interested to know what if any other similarities there are.
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels By the cover alone it seems to signal "I'm like this other book you love". In an interview with Writer's Digest, the author says she read "everything by Becky Chambers". As long as it has something new to say, I'm not complaining, but I'm fascinated by how upfront it is. I forgot that Psalm's protagonist follows the "God of Small Comforts".
@ It certainly sounds like there's a heavy element of inspiration coming from the Becky Chambers books, I'd be very curious to know the thoughts on it of someone who's read book. Once she puts her own twist on it, that's fine by me. I recently read a case of "inspiration" where the author just plain lifts pieces straight from the text they're "inspired" by, in that case it definitely went too far. I wonder how close the case is here.
This one is on my TBR as well and I've been so happy to see it getting positive reviews.
I have five other books of her to read before getting to this 'piece de resistance'. Thanks for you enthusiasm. It's contagious.
I know, I'll be looking forward to your update on how you find her Cycle of Fire trilogy, no one's really talking about those (yet, at least!)
I am usually a plot-focused reader - but I LOVED the first law world! All the characters were great and terrible :D
I know right, and as more of them get introduced it only gets crazier 😂
Great review. This is on my TBR but it looks like it will be a while until I get to it as there is a giant hold list on the Libby App for both the e-Book and the audiobook. 😊
It's worth the wait.
This one has become popular, just like The Spell Shop. It's on my TBR but it will be awhile before I read it.
It's a nice one when you eventually get to it.
My husbands writing a cozy fantasy, I’ll send him this review for inspiration
Thanks for the support as always!
Glad you enjoyed this one! Crazy thing is this is my least favorite of the three Ive read. Each book has gotten better.
I actually finished Warhost of Vastmark last night, and I have to agree with you about it getting better. Ships of Merior was up and down for me, but Warhost is my favorite of the series so far.
Read the Empire of the Wolf series and was mesmerized! The world building and unexpected twists were captivating. Cannot wait to dive into this book that I believe takes place before The Empire of the Wolf series.
You're in for a blast with this one then! Richard Swan really got up to some hijinks in it. I haven't read the previous trilogy as yet but I know for sure from talking about this with other ARC readers it takes place a couple centuries after those books.
I just finished the book yesterday. It was jarring to meet Lowry but by the last scene I came to understand him and wondered if he ever truly made it home. I appreciate the varying perspectives of area x and its origin story and by the end of absolution I now have some sense of compassion for the source that area x came from. Area X is as powerless as the expedition. As desperate to be understood and perceived. I would welcome a book 5.
You got a haircut!
Just finished this book, and yea brutal is the right word, but I really felt like the themes depicted here are still relevant and were tackled in a poignant way
@@TheBlazegeo yea, there's nothing gratuitous that Paks goes through. Everything ties back to some theme or end goal. The next book goes even harder, sounds like you'll enjoy it when you get to it!
I keep hearing great things about Richard swan I really need you to read some of his works this year! Great review my friend
Thanks! I've heard mixed things about his first trilogy, which is why I decided to jump in on this one and wasn't disappointed. Might be a good place to start for you too!
@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels I will heed your advice my friend
I plan on reading Richard Swan this year. I was already interested in the books and then I saw that he painted Warhammer minis so I now feel obligated to help someone else pay for their plastic crack 🤣. Another great review!
This is a great one to start with. He got his start writing for Black Library apparently, so you can guess how that influenced what this is like.
So many books Ive not heard on this list. Im going to have to step up my reading game
Or save some time and just check these out, ha.
Oh man only adding to my Janny Wurts fomo! Love hearing such a rave review about a bk 1
This was already on my TBR but it has now shot up the list! Great review!
One of my favourite series of all time 🎉
*adds to TBR after Dresden
Great review! So glad to have another reader in this wonderful world. On Book 8 now and still enjoying it just as much as when I started. Cheers!
That's awesome to hear. I'm looking forward to enjoying this series more and more as I get deeper into it!
Great review! I'm looking forward to starting this series this month. I'm wrapping up reading Mistborn book 1, then I'll be jumping into this one.
Nice! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Wow! You’ve known about this series for a much longer time than most of BookTube! That was very well said about the story flowing from Arithon and Lysaer’s interaction and core traits. Glad you’re enjoying the series so far!
I knew it existed, if I'd known it was this amazing I'd have read this a long, long time ago. Better late than never though, and this way I have lots of people to talk about it with, ha. Thanks for watching!
Nice to get your thoughts on this one
Thanks for watching!
Great review. This book sounds very interesting. :)
Thank you!
I'm part way through the 4th novel, this series really is exceptional. Curse of the Mistwraith is one of the best starts to a Fantasy series I've read!
I so agree. The prologue is one of the best intros I've read to a fantasy saga. I'm halfway through the 3rd at the moment and I'm just enjoying this series more and loving it that much more as a result.
@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels I really enjoyed Ships of Merior, but Warhost was on another level!
I am so happy to hear you enjoyed this! I bought the series and plan to read it this year. I am super hyped now to read this. Great video my friend
That's pretty awesome to hear, I hope you have as much fun with it as I do!
The Crown of Stars series is a. COMMITMENT! It's very long and a bit up and down in quality. I found it hard to get through but also I'm glad I made the effort :) hopefully you'll like it!
That's the hope! Thanks for the feedback on it, I hardly know anyone who has read it.
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels Neither! There was a reddit readalong of the series a while back which I enjoyed looking up while I was reading the series :)
@paperback_cat thanks for letting me know, I'll have to check it out as I go!
