Can I Play Lute Music on Guitar?
Before renting or buying a lute, maybe you just want to try out some of the music on a guitar - it's what all the cool guitarists are doing, so why not, eh?
The process is really simple since the guitar and lute luckily share lineage and have significant similarities in their tuning! All we need to do is tune the G string on the guitar down to an F#, then put a capo on the 3rd string. Naturally the capo part is actually optional, just out there for people who want to play at the "proper pitch."
RE: NAILS*
Typical lute technique as it's taught nowadays draws a lot of its technical direction from the words of various treatise-writers from the lute's heyday, ranging from E. G. Baron to Alessandro Piccinini; most of them spoke against nails pretty clearly, although they certainly had some differences of opinion. That said, you could just as easily level the question, "if a bunch of writers with their own agenda are all writing that lutenists shouldn't do it, doesn't that mean that a lot probably DID play with their nails?"
In my personal opinion, flesh produces a much nicer sound when making contact with a 2-string course. However, you could argue that nails are permissible when playing either single-string courses of the theorbo or the modern liuto forte or in general when playing continuo in a larger band. All debatable points that I would love to hear some thoughts about!

How Do I GET a Lute?
มุมมอง 4.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Lutes may not be as easy to find as a guitar, but they're actually not that hard to get a hold of! The first step I would recommend universally would be to see if your country or province have a lute society of some kind; typically they would have rental programs for you to try one first or they may be able to facilitate a purchase for you. What IS a Lute?
มุมมอง 3.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The European Lute is a beautiful, gourd-shaped instrument, which inherited its characteristics chiefly from the Arabic Oud. There are dozens of sub-varieties spanning different locales and time periods across Europe, but the most iconic one at this point is the classic, 6-course Renaissance Lute, which saw popular usage all over during the late 16th century. For more about these instruments, ho...
Robert de Visée, D Minor Suite - Allemande
มุมมอง 5263 ปีที่แล้ว
What began as a simple, one-off project became a sprawling endeavor behind the scenes! One of the most impressive elements of so much theorbo music are the campanella elements as well as the often jumpy bass line. Rather than simply learning a new solo act, I ended up (arguably) mastering a new level of right hand dexterity, which I will need in some of the videos to come! My Corner of the Inte...
Should We Cancel Beethoven??
มุมมอง 6103 ปีที่แล้ว
Nowadays we've seen article after article detailing why Beethoven or some other composer ought to be cancelled amide the modern zeitgeist of wokeness. My main point, what I want to bring to light is that these articles are most often shallow and end up doing a disservice to the conversation that ought to be had: how can we bring meaningful change to the Classical Music scene, which is underpinn...
Introducing Thelonius, the Theorbo

In honor of the Visée series as well as my upcoming feature of To Zanarkand, I'd like to introduce you all to the next member of my lute band: Thelonius, the Théorbe de Pieces! I go over it in the video, but he's a special case, a 2/3 length instrument, a theorbo designed after the French théorbe de pieces, which was intended by its makers specifically for soloistic repertoire. Often they tend ...
Greensleeves - Ground & Divisions
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the oldest, most popular tunes, Greensleeves, was in fact much more variable than we know. It existed and was passed around cultures as a ground, often as either a Romanesca or a Passamezzo Antico - in either case, a foundation on which one could build and demonstrate one's ability. Here we see just such a case: in the second iteration, we have Francis Cutting's Divisions (read: variatio...
Robert de Visée, D Minor Suite - Prelude
มุมมอง 6423 ปีที่แล้ว
The more ancient the music, the harder it is to find - this is true of all early music research. The vast majority of past music has been lost and we only receive the tip of the iceberg nowadays. With Visée's music, we are lucky to have two compendia, which contain his theorbo suites: the Paris manuscript and the Saizenay manuscript. We are lucky not because they are twice-attested, but because...
You should know: Chevalier de Saint-Georges
มุมมอง 24K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Here I want to tell the story of the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Joseph Bologne, partially because it's a story that's almost completely unheard of even in high-level music history courses, but also partially because I want to make an example of how "selective" the pen of history can be and of how much it can bias historical account. I urge anyone in music to look more deeply first in to Bologn...

Perhaps the main culprit as to why Boulogne's music was lost is Napolean. However, as the music industry and academia pride themselves in being such scholars of music history and research, why none of them came across Boulogne is disappointing. Western classical music already has a bad rap of being very racist (the people, not the music). Has it not struck anyone as odd that we went to music school in college and learned only about the music of dead, white male Europeans? White female composers were not even mentioned. I remember a brief mention of Clara Schumann but no other women. It is only fitting that we examine Boulogne more closely as well as any others who may have been swept under the carpet. As for Mozart, there is no desire to take anything from his legacy. The only thing to take are the fallacies purported by academia. The music industry has dubbed certain motifs and musical passages as "Mozartian". But it has become clear some of the motifs and phrases were first penned by Boulogne which Mozart "used". Shall we now use the term "Boulognian"? Not just Boulogne's symphonie concertante in E major where Mozart pirated passages, it seems very possible Mozart was also "inspired" by one of Boulogne's string quartets (from 1771) when writing his Exultate Jubilate in 1773. How many more of Boulogne's works or any other composer's works has Mozart copied?

No sadly it’s a Vice of human nature when a person has been erroneously taught and believe that their culture, race or set of beliefs are the best for any given amount of reasons. When those beliefs are openly challenged, thereby causing friction a struggle ensues.

BEFORE COMMENTIN ON WHAT YOU JUST SAID, I WISH TO SPECIFY , THAT I WRITE IN UPPER CASE BECAUSE OF MY VERY POOR EYESIGHT AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER REASON! I AM FRENCH AND I KNOW PERFECTLY WELL, THAT 18TH CENTURY FRENCH SOCIETY WAS THE MOST RACIST ONE AMONG ALL EUROPEAN NATIONS, SO NOTHING ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT BOLOGNE'S LIFE SURPRISES ME HERE. HE MUST HAVE SUFFERED A LOT. NOT DOUBT ABOUT THAT! NOW GENIUS IS GENIUS AND HIS HAS NOW WON RECOGNITION IN THE END, IF NOT ALREADY DURING HIS LIFETIME! NOW GALLANT IS ORIGINALLY A FRENCH WORD AND MEANS SEDUCTIVE AND ESPECIALLY WITH REGARDS TO PAYING HOMAGE TO LADIES AS A CHEVALIER (A KNIGHT IN FRENCH) WOULD DO TO A LADY WO THOM HE WOULD THUS EXPRESS HIS LOVE AND ALSO SUBMISSION AND OFFER TO SERVE HER. THIS IS THE ORIGNAL MEANING OF THAT WORD, THAT THEN PASSED INTO ENGLISH. IT ALSO MEANS QUITE LIVELY, EXACTLY AS THE ITALIAN WORD ALLEGRO ALSO USED IN MUSIC. THE GALLANT STYLE WOULD THEN BE A VERY ALLURING, SEDUCTIVE AND PLEASING TO THE EAR, GENERALLY SPEAKING! WE ALSO SAY ''ENLEVÉ'' IN FRENCH. NOW, I AM NOT A MUSICIAN AND OF COURSE YOUR DEFINITION OF GALLANT REMAINS THE RIGHT ONE! I JUST WANTED TO EMPHASIZE WHERE THAT WORD CAME FROM AND WHY! AND HERE FOR THOSE WHO KNOW FRENCH ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND WHAT GALLANT, ACTUALLY WRITTEN GALANT, WITH ONLY ONE L IN FRENCH, ORIwww.cnrtl.fr/etymologie/galantGINALLY AND WHO WOULD BE INTERESED IN KNOWING MORE ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANT AND STILL MEANS SINCE WE STILL SAY IN MODERN FRENCH...ÊTRE GALANT...AS WHEN A TRUE GENTLEMAN ALWAYS HAS THIS ''LADIES FIRTST''' ATTITUDE WITH THEM! AS FOR RACISM TODAY TOWARDS BLACK PERFORMERS IN MUSIC, IT IS ALSO PERFECTLY TRUE AND ONE ONLY HAS TO KNOW THE BIOGRAPHY OF NINA SIMONE TO KNOW HOW MUCH SHE SUFFERED FROM SUCH RACISM IN WHITE AMERICAN SOCIETY AND UNFORTUNATELY RACISM IS STILL VERY MUCH A FACT OF LIFE IN MODERN SOCIETY EVERYWHERE IN WHITE SOCIETY. IT STILL REMAINS A MAIN HURDLE FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE EVERYWHERE WHERE WHITES ARE THE MAJORITY! I AM WHITE MYSELF, SO I KNOW BECAUSE I KNOW MY OWN RACE AND OUR TERRIBLE PREJUDICES...VERY, VERY SAD!

When I played classical music in my elementary, middle, and high school courses parents were calling me or visiting the classroom to compliment me because their children and youth were going home to tell them that they live classical jazz. I tried this with my college students. They lived it too. So, classical music is played whenever I’m teaching. Very softly. Very subtly. It helps students to be calm and they finish their assignments. There should be listening corners where students can go, to relax, and enjoy music from many genres. Watch the academic scores go up! Watch diversity in the classroom blossom! Parents will be contacting teachers with compliments, and not complaints. Bring the arts back! Thanks.

It’s about time. The music from the Afro-Caribbean and Latin American diaspora is under promoted. This movie, “Chevalier,” should be shown in as many theatres as possible. The story of Joseph Bologne should be taught in schools. Bring music and the arts back to pour public schools. Let all students have the opportunities to engage in these pursuits. Only then will the best and the brightest emerge from the masses. Countries thrive when the best and brightest stars rise to the stop. The issues surrounding legacy students and their legacy wealth means that poor, talented and gifted students often have to scramble for the “scraps from the table of joy,” instead of being assessed on their competencies. Hopefully, as news of Joseph Bologne spread more people will be inspired to help children and youth gain recognition. One can only hope.
