The Gift Mechanic in EDH | ep. 34
This episode, Shawn breaks down the "give a gift" or "gift" mechanic for Commander/EDH. Is it good? Is it terrible? The community can't seem to make up their mind, but the truth is, it's BOTH! I'll break down and grade all 24 "Gift" cards and help you decide if you want to run them in your next game of Commander.

New to magic, this is the card that hooked me
I have some awesome tech, ragadragga gorgots boss, it is a great buff and untapper for rosheen because we are allways casting big spells
In Orzhov I'm a fan of High priest of Penance as a rattlesnake
Ral's -3 is actually pretty strong. I have won games using only his -3 by filtering my deck and getting to the right cards sooner.
First!
I made a 540 commander cube where you draft 6 packs each for a full sized deck. I just grabbed staple cards I like and added more cards that match those playstyles.
My Mikaeus artifact deck runs Acererak as an alternate commander. I have so many infinite interactions in this deck that it's a seamless switch. Between the undead and persist mechanics, tutors, sac outlets and artifact mechanics I can really escalate quickly. Great insights.
Lich is a funny word. This is a scary deck.
On theme then!
Just what I was looking for! When nadu came out, I immediately thought to rebuild my derevi deck. Maybe I can get my table to allow me to 'Rule 0' him back in
@@goochtheotaku good luck! if not, the new Kykar from Foundations is a decent bird.

Dunno if this was a recent ruling, but Nadu is Banned in Commander. Cool deck tech, otherwise. Cheers. 🦉
@@Mavryck_Tha_Myghty hey, thank you! Nadu was replaced and the birds were sad. I actually replaced with a Mana Vault I had, as Derevi can untap it easily. Probably not the best replacement, so I'll keep an eye for some interesting bird-themed stuff.
@@Rule0Podcast - Ooo, mana vault. Now there’s an idea! I can very much appreciate a tribal-like deck tech. Very cool. I hope you make an updated version if you replace a good percentage of the cards. Cheers, and thanks for the response. 🦉
I don’t think he was victim blaming he was pointing out that they couldn’t have possibly expected the response to go over well. He said death threats were bad. I think Prof went to hard on him for his opinion.
@@Boomerang556 I’m sorry but “what did you expect” is quite clear that they should’ve known what they were getting into, which, as JLK, knew about the death threats means that was a part of the calculus of that statement. Problem is that he didn’t do the math and rather made that statement in anger, not out of logic or thought.
@@jasonwhisnant5457 Well several creators including prof have said they have received death threats for less. They honestly should have expected a potentially violent response. That might be a hot take but any sane person would think the way this was done was poorly planned and pointing that out is not the same as condoning or supporting the violent behavior. He and Jimmy both said they could have told them that would happen. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise. Receiving death threats isn’t a get out a criticism free card and criticizing them isn’t victim blaming. Obviously death threats are bad and shouldn’t happen. It’s just obvious!
@@Boomerang556 it's a lot simpler if you look at this like a math equation. Player X makes death threat to CRC member. CRC member is the victim. Player X is 100% at fault for making a death threat. JLK, in the heat of the moment, stated that CRC member shoulders some of the blame; they should have expected a death threat AND made a different decision based on this. That argument took blame OFF of Player X and shared it with the CRC member. That's victim-blaming. The victim is now "responsible" for the death threat. This is the same exact equation that plays out when a victim of rape is told "well, you shouldn't have dressed like that. What did you expect?" It takes accountability away from the perpetrator. That's not what you want, I hope, but know that there's a mountain of people victim-blaming the CRC, saying "well, you shouldn't have worn that dress."
Great talk! You could use this to teach some undergrads or grad students about IFS! I'm a CBT professional myself but don't act like one!
@@jasonwhisnant5457 thank you so much for comment and for doing the work! My imposter syndrome part is pretty loud, but I'm getting to the point with enough practice where I feel confident enough to teach or share.
Woohoo, the sound is finally fixed at the 400% level!

A comedy group got me back into playing Magic. I hadn't played in over a decade when I started binge watching the folks over at Loading Ready Run, and there's a video of them playing this format I had never heard of before: commander. Humor is so very important to any hobby, especially a hobby where we spend inordinate amounts of time and money on squares of card stock.
@@carlwilliams1340 an absolutely glaring exception that I didn't bring them up, so I'm glad you did! I've watched many an LRR pre-release but not so many sketches of theirs, which is probably why they slipped my mind.
Let me know if you’d like any sort of unsolicited advice!

@@Rule0Podcast I would say for your box break videos here on TH-cam just try to get that camera zoomed in a little more to really bring out the cards :) and maybe a light stand, maybe you have one I just can’t tell in the video. Overall, amazing energy! Not many of us have it but you definitely do! My wife joins in on my videos from time to time so it’s exciting to see your significant other having just much fun as you!

I have my D&D Cube List - cubecobra.com/cube/overview/kek1 I'll ask Taylor to see if he has a commander cube up.
I am a big proponent of “make them have it, call their bluff, and don’t negotiate with terrorists!” The more cocky and insistent people are with their rattlesnake style defenses, the more I’m convinced they’re only holding on by a thread and that I need to keep pushing…. Most of the time.

Under played? Give it a chance to be played before calling it underplayed
@@Razdasoldier fair concern. Just to let you know where that title comes from- it's the rankings on EDHrec. Alania is LOW in rankings in terms of Bloomburrow legends. Flubs with 1557 decks made, for example, but Alania with 223. It's not a knock - I still love the deck!
Yeah, literally not been able to get my hands on any cards yet since bundle, booster box AND precons have been sold out at my usual store I order from.
Well 2 months later, I think we can now definitely say she is underplayed.
@@BrotherMax6 Two more months later and you're still right. I'm currently overhauling my Bria Riptide Rogue deck to make Alania my commander because I decided I wanted less prowess and more spellslinging in my otter commander experience. Not to mention, the fact that you make an opponent draw a card has some fun opportunities for politics at the table
Is crow storm legal???
@@mistfortune4675 not officially ... HOWEVER, the rules committee released a big statement today saying that they're working on a big project to go through all un-cards and label ones that are "okay" for play. I don't know if they'll officially sanction, but they're at least revamping their stance on them, so you may be able to play crow storm with their consent soon enough. As of now, maybe try and rule zero it explaining that it's a worse storm card than most.
@Rule0Podcast crow storm should be legal. They were scared of storm crow when it was printed.
